Large venue: Roger Waters, The Wall. With my son last summer for his 20th birthday. His first stadium show.

Small/medium Venue: Springsteen, the Spectrum, 1976.

Bar: Tough one, so many good times. Bruce Hornsby at the TLA, 1987 was pretty memorable. Saw The Band at a bar in college, was a great concert from what I remember.

This is the problem - I don't remember half of them!

I saw Edgar Winter on my 21st birthday. I remember getting there and Frankenstein, that's it

small venue:  that's a tie.

February, 2012, Atlantic City House of Blues...Guns N' Roses.  Axl and the gang took the stage at 12 midnight...3 freakin' hours of high-energy Axl, 30+ songs...like most of you here, I'm an in-shape triathlete, but Axl kicked my butt that night.  50 years old and rockin' like that...he's not human!

May, 2006, Hammerstein Ballroom, NY City...the return of GNR.  After a 3 1/2 year hiatus, the band was back...absolutely off the hook insane.  it was bedlam in there.  early start...10:40!

arena venue:

GNR/Metallica, Rich Stadium, Buffalo, NY, 7-25-92.  nosebleeds, 2nd level...two bands of that caliber on the same stage...seeing the massive Use Your Illusion tapestries get hoisted up after Metallica was done, just awesome.  Metallica during the day...and GNFNR into the night.  Unreal.

Thanks for starting this thread...great memories.

Any of the 15+ Rush concerts were tops for me. The one that stood out was the R-30 Tour.

Another really cool one was an 80's Reunion concert with Jean Loves Jezebelle, Howard Jones, ToneLoc, Rick Springfield and The Outfield. Cool outdoor venue in San Antonio the name of which I can't remember.

I saw Elton John and Billy Joel in concert many years ago and while the concert itself was awesome, the absolute BEST part of the night was after the concert we decided to stop off at the nearby hotel for a drink at the bar and who walks in but Billy Joel and he's not ready to be done for the night.

He went up to the guy who was already playing in the piano bar and asked if he could take over.  He then took requests from anyone and as long as he knew the song, he would play.  When we left the piano bar at 3:00am, he was still playing and having a great time. It was one of the most memorable nights of my life in terms of music.

This one's easy. Lloyd Cole, this past October at the City Winery in Chicago.

I love an awful lot of music from all different genres and by many artists. But for nearly the past 30 years, I've always said Lloyd Cole was my favorite music artist. He started out with Lloyd Cole and The Commotions, who got played a bit on Mtv, but despite making a splash in the UK they really never made much of an impact in the States (their most notable single was "Perfect Skin"). Still, I was hooked. Lloyd eventually split from the Commotions around '87 and went on to release around 10 solo albums to date. The guy is without a doubt my biggest music idol. I know every word to his every song, and can pretty much mark the phases in my life by his album release dates.

I'd seen Lloyd play live three times over three decades but hadn't seen him for the last 10 years after moving back to Wisconsin. In August, I saw he was playing a solo acoustic show in Chicago and, though I would never typically travel to see a concert, my wife encouraged me to get tickets and book a hotel room. Boy, am I glad we did.

The venue itself is brand new-- small and intimate, but with great food and wine. Our table was front and center, about 15 feet from where Lloyd performed. He chose a worthy set list of his greatest hits and offered up really thoughtful acoustic interpretations of each. He was funny and dropped interesting insights on his songs and career to an appreciative crowd. He even took a few requests. It was a performance to remember. Then he invited fans to meet him and get stuff signed in the lobby after the show. Of course, we lined up, bought some stuff, got it signed and got our picture taken with Lloyd. Then we headed off to the bar.

A short while later, we're sitting at the bar, and who appears nearby to order a drink but Lloyd. I offer to buy him a drink and he explains he drinks for free at the venue but he sits down right next to us. We wind up talking for the next hour or so over really good scotch (he himself is Scottish, of course) about music, his inspirations, golf, kids, life on the road, whatever. He tells us about how he's working on a new album with another of my wife and mine's favorite artists (Matthew Sweet) and the direction he has in mind for the album.

As the evening goes along, some other fans in the bar recognize him and begin asking for a few too many pictures and he decides to pack up his guitars. On the way out, we see him again struggling with his two guitar cases and gear and I offer to give him a hand. He makes a crack about seeing the last of the taxi's go by, and we offer to give him a ride to his hotel... and he accepts. So we schlep his stuff off to our SUV and a few minutes later as we're talking some more, it suddenly dawns on me that my music idol since as long as I can remember is sitting in the back seat of my SUV and we're just talking like two old friends. How cool is that? I mean, how many people get to meet their music idols much less hang out for a couple hours and then give them a lift back to their hotel? Crazy stuff.

We drop him off, shake hands and he tells us about a great local restaurant we should go to for brunch the next day. Just a great guy and an unforgettable night. I'm still thinking about having a bronze plaque mounted where he sat in my truck, but it would just be covered up by my son's car seat anyway. Still, a night I'll never forget.

I saw Lloyd Cole and the Commotions in the UK in the eighties a concert I recall.  He was a good performer back then - isn't it just great that you were able to meet up with him and he was so approachable.  Great story.

U2 360 - Yeah I loved it even though it's now a little more about the production and maybe less about the music.  U2 can do no wrong in my book !!!!

I saw Material Issue at Glam Slam (Prince's nightclub) in the twin cities circa 1992.  A memorable night indeed.

For sheer entertainment value for me it was the Foo Fighters. They just know how to knock the doors down.

Greenday were pretty good as well.

I took my wife to see Harry Connick Jr at an open air concert at Kings park in Perth. She and her best friend ended up on stage with him where my wife grabbed the microphone and told him "You're too pissed to sing any more, i'll do it!" I think she may have a too much herself that night!

One of the best bass players is an original Flecktone.  Victor Wooten is a great bass player, and I missed there show in Omaha, because I had my own music show booked before I found out they were there on that date.  I hope they finish their new album and do another tour.

Best was Springsteen 8/4/81 @ the now long gone Capital Centre in Landover, MD. It was also my first concert ever (I was 14 at the time) and the standard by which I've measured everything since then.

Most memorable: Fall of 1970 in Cullowhee NC (Western Carolina Univ).  Grass Roots concert in the gym...they were ok.  After the concert there was another band set up in the back corner of the gym.  I had never heard of the band, but the girl I was dating told me that she heard they were pretty good and wanted to hang around.  I was more interested in getting her back to my room, but she insisted on staying and listening to a few songs.  Only about 30 other students stayed.   A few joints were passed around as we stood 10 feet away from Gregg, Duane, Dickey Betts, Butch Trucks and Berry Oakley...The Allman Brothers Band.  I don't remember much from the 70s but I do vividly remember that night.

While not my normal choice of music, I would say the best big venue show I ever saw was Phil Collins (in the late 80s/early 90s).  Sounded better in person than on albums.

Best concert/mixed genre was James Taylor with the Ft. Worth Symphony Orchestra.  With my father when I was living in Texas.

Best All Day Show - Amnesty International Concert in the early/mid 80's.  All day affair with The Nevelle Brothers, Howard Jones, U2, Sting, and a host of other bands and performers.

Loudest Show - 2nd Row of Stevie Ray Vaughn (New Years Eve Concert).  I was 15 and so drunk....

Most Recent - Rascal Flatts Tour (2012).  With the wife.

This was one of my favorite smaller venue concerts - back in the mid 90s....it was fantastic.

I have two favorite concerts, one was the Violent Femmes in California in the mid 90s (before kids, we got to listen to a LOT of live music), the second was Wilco at the Portland Maine Pier a couple of summers ago. Jeff Tweedy can work a crowd like no one I've ever seen and the music is epic.

A group that is always good, as long as you are not in their home town (they must stay with their parents, and the anger spills over into the music, not in a good way) is They Might Be Giants. The crowd interaction is very good for a bunch of nerds listening and singing along to music.

Showing my age here, maybe not the best, but certainly the most memorable, The Beatles in New Orleans in 1964.  Couldn't hear much because of the screaming and they didn't play very long, but it was something to behold.
