Expert 1233![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Subject: RE: I have had it with HammerMake your own. I purchased maltodextrin, fructose, citric acid from eBay, vitamins and minerals from Puritans Pride, found a few 'recipes' on the internet, used the info on gram quantities from Infinite and Hammer. Tastes pretty good...and...my weight has dropped, my times in all events are the best ever (no longer have to use performance enhancing drugs), women find me more attractive, I can eat whatever I want, abdominal muscles just appeared on my stomach without any ab work, and the kids like it too! {this information has not been validated by the FDA, and no claim of effectiveness or even edibility should be inferred by these statements, individual results may vary...but send your money anyway} |

As I understand it, an athlete made that claim. "" I read two articles on this in two different triathlon magazines. From what I remember it was 3 athletes from 3 different teams. They hired a lawyer and an independent tester. They presented their evidence in court and were vindicated. However the governing body said "even if they didn't intentionally ingest it they did ingest it and this benefitted" but I beleive their suspensions were reduced. Balco was famous for putting HGH i ntheir ZMA. These supplement companies are NOT federally regulated and NOT federally tested. they only legally have to have like 10% of what they say they have on the label. If they put roids in their supplements and then people will buy them because they thin kthe supplements are helping them. If you read the supplement handbook they have stories of well known companies like Pinnacle and Labrada and even EAS where 10 tests from 10 different samples produce 10 different % of the supplements the labels claim. Theyare not exact and they don't have to be. I don't think it is a coincidence that 3 unrelated athletes taking the same Hammer product tested positive. That's just my $.02. maybe i'm gullible |

Veteran 244![]() ![]() ![]() South Carolina | Subject: RE: I have had it with HammerMy local tri/running store is pushing Hammer Recoverite. The new strawberry flavor. I buy two individual serving packets to try it out. I think it tastes terrible! But, if it tastes so bad, why did I gulp down a whole bike bottle in just a few minutes . . . ? I figure it must have something in it my body craves/needs after exercise (different from other gels/sports drinks). |

From what I remember it was 3 athletes from 3 different teams. I'd be interested to see a citation for either one. Without some documentation, it's difficult for me to put any stock in your assertion here. "From what I remember..." is a pretty lousy way to submarine a company many people here have done business with. |

Extreme Veteran 504![]() Tucson, AZ | Subject: RE: I have had it with HammerThe one thing I get from all this is that we are ALL DIFFERENT and need different stuff. We should all use what works best regardless of the advertising. I tried lots of combinations of products before I found what worked for me and it has been mostly hammer products.... they go down easy, my energy is consistent and I don't get stomach distress. So, until I find something better... I will not give up Hammer no matter how many glossy mailers I get telling me how great they are... My $0.02 worth... Emerson PS: At my age and speed, I have no concerns about anyone ever asking me for a blood test about my suplements... so, I read all about it, but have not given it any further concern... They hired a lawyer and an independent tester. They presented their evidence in court and were vindicated. However the governing body said "even if they didn't intentionally ingest it they did ingest it and this benefitted" but I beleive their suspensions were reduced. I just did a google search for this case. Everything I read said flat out that no hammer product tested positive for the substance they tested positive for. It is this simple - as soon as this case broke I am 100% other companies that compete with hammer had hammer products tested to try to prove this because some proof would have destroyed them. They are the dominant player in the tri world and others would love to take their business away. There are thousands of these bottles out there . . . so even older ones could be tested (in case hammer stopped doing this illegal activity). So, bottom line is this - until one of their products test positive for a banned or illegal substance, Hammer is innocent. Period. Thousands of athletes take their products and the endurolytes are hugely popular (the product in question). The proof would be out there if they were spiking their products. Even as a Hammer hater (I started this thread) I side with them strongly in this case. I say again, what athlete outside of Andy Petite (Yankees) has ever admitted guilt when they get busted? I have missed it if any others have. They are all innocent!!!!! |

Member 48![]() NE Wisconsin | Subject: RE: I have had it with HammerPardon the loose association, but I do believe Stevia is an herb. There are so many things that get put in our foods and haven't really been tested. When did they decide putting high fructose corn syrup in everything was safe? By the time there's enough INDEPENDENT research out there done, we'll be long gone... Thanks for thread. I thought I was behind the times without Hammer and pretty convinced my half marathon times would magically improve if I bought the orange creamsicle stuff, LOL. I developed a hatred of lemonlime gatorade. have fun Anne |

I just tossed 3 big containers of them we won from different tris as my kids wouldn't drink it either for soccer games/practices. I wish I knew someone who would like it and use it to have given it to them. |

The Natti | Subject: RE: I have had it with HammerI have been out of the country for 10 days so I did not see this thread. Firstly, Hammer has done a tremendous ammout for our sport. They have supported Triathletes and endurance athletes for decades. The people that own the company are good people. I just do not agree with some of their positions. The issues that I hear from athletes are several. One is the taste. Their products are OK if they are cold, but if the drink gets hot, not so good. Second, it is a difficult system to use on race day. Races bring an entirely different set of pressures. It is very difficult to manage all of the components of their system and not screw it up. How many times have things that have worked in training not worked on race day? Last and probably most important, there is NOTHING wrong with siple sugars during exercise. In fact quite the opposite. If you limit your intake to maltodextrin you can only absorb about .9 gms per pound of lean body weight. By mixing in glucose/dextrose and a sucrose those numbers go up to near 1.25 gms per pound. That means for most people instead of limiting yourself to 240 calories absorbed per hour, you can actually be getting > 300 calories per hour. This will make a HUGE difference in your day. If you try to take more than 60 gms of maltodextrine alone it can lead to all kind of issues like bloating cramping etc. |

Subject: RE: I have had it with HammerI actually like HEED. Well, the strawberry stuff anyway. I don't particularly like the gels, anyone's gels, much. I just use one scoop of HEED per 1/2 hour I'm about to work out and don't use it at all if I'm going for less than 1/2 hour. That's worked well all summer. I've quit having sore legs after starting to use Recoverite after running/biking. It's been working for me and I'll probably try Perpetuem or Sustained Energy when I get to 5+ hour races. I doubt I'll get much more into it but those (with the gels) seem to have the liquid and semi-solid nutrition for the racing I want to do and my body seems to take well to them. I learned long ago to ignore most of the advertising or at least try not to get caught up in the "gotta have or you'll die" feeling for suppliments. |

Enough Kool Aid - I would highly reccomned that you all contact Hammer and let them know you don't like the high volume of advertisements. I can't promise it will stop, but I can say with a fairly high level of certainty that unless we speak up and tell them we don't like the practice that it will continue!! |
