Ok... Training plan is in and starting to log after a few weeks off!

How is everyone else doing through the winter months... and by the way... what was up with that snow in Vegas yesterday Jim?  My parents only lost one branch, but they could barely get out of their development (Henderson)....

Actually training a lot harder than I planned for December and I feel weirdly motivated! I'm going skiing on the 27th for a week so I am having an enforced rest from the 24th through till 4th January.

i have had a very soft December, i am not dealing with the early winter well at all and have gotten lazy. I have done some dedicated running races, and have dropped 10mins off my 5k time, but i had a lot of room for improvement. i am hoping for a bike trainer for x-mas and will ramp up everything in the new year. i will  need a good kick in the Azz sometimes, and that is why i am here!!

Henderson got it pretty bad (6", I heard) and the entire valley had a snow day the next day.

I still think it was a bit silly though.  I lived in Denver for YEARS, and you don't call off school for what we got.  It wasn't that bad.

I'm thinking everyone enjoy the holidays and we resolve to hit it hard after the new year.

However, I'm still going to be around.  I got a lottery spot for the Escape from Alcatraz race, so I'm suddenly very motivated.  I will be continueing my winter maintenance work for another couple weeks, then get into my plan for an April race...

So, has anyone signed up for a 2009 race yet?  Or at least have one planned?

Nice!  I only put down money on the one I HAVE to, or I lose the spot.  Most races around here, you can wait, even till race day.  So I usually put it off untill the entry fee goes up and get in the day before.

For me, most around here close out pretty early, and others, I just like to get on the calendar, but these are what I am officially signed up and paid for...

  • Lake Minnetonka Half Marathon
  • Buffalo Triathlon (Olympic)
  • Liberty HIM
  • Lifetime Fitness (Olympic)
  • IM Wisconsin
  • Silverman 1/2

Still waiting on a few more to open up to finish out the plan....

Yeah, if i don't get them on the Calendar, i will not do them as the wife will plan something or i will procrastinate and not sign up. They are good motivators having a drop dead date.

June - My first OLY
July - A sprint I did this year, thought it would be good to compare my times.

Local tri in May is open for entry 8th January so I'll try and get in. It sold out in 24hrs last year so I'll have to get out of bed early!

I'm also going to try and get into the "Great North Run" which is the world's largest half marathon.

Signed up for the half, but talked to Frank and if I feel "good" after IM WI, we can "upgrade" to the full... but for now, the 1/2 for the second year!

After doing the full, I said I was going to shoot for quantity instead of quality, this year.  I just wanted to race a LOT of short races.  Also, just do the Silverman Half.

I also said I didn't think I was going to do the Silverman Full again since it's so freaking hard, but do a faster/flatter IM, like florida or Redman/Vineman.

But now that I have forgotten the pain, I may do the full again.

How far apart are IMWI and Silverman?

I can't imagine the Silverman full!!!  The half wiped me out!  I was feeling great and talking like nothing happened at the finish, but the problem was I had NO recollection of crossing the line.  60 minutes later, getting out of the shower, I was shaking so bad, I couldn't get my socks on!!!   So, the full???  I need to be in MUCH better shape!  LOVED the swim though!!!!  (I ordered a copy of the Video... can't wait to see it!  the trailer is great!)

IM Wisconsin is September 13th and then Silverman on 11/8...  pretty tight... 8 weeks or so between them...  IM Wisconsin goal is "Finish" with a good swim... If I do Silverman 1/2 next year, I am looking for a 6:30 time (somewhere near that)... If I do the full, it would be "Finish and remember finishing!!!"

It could be doable.  I was feeling pretty much 100% after about 2-3 weeks.  That leaves 5 weeks to basically maintain the fitness you have.  However, once you do the first one, it may be easy to sit back and relish in it, rather that get geared up for another one.

I would probably pick to do the Silverman 1/2, FOR ME.  Not for physical reasons, but more mental.  (I was just tired of IM training, to be honest).

Hello Jim and all fellow mentees!  I'm glad to be part of this group.

NAME: Nats, a.k.a. Nathalie

STORY: I'm a 42 year old woman who jumped from weight/power lifting to triathlons in 2006.  An acquaintance of mine back then coaxed me into this wonderful sport.  I got hooked and have been in love with this sport ever since.  I have two full seasons of training and racing under my belt and have participated in several sprint and olympic distance races. I also completed my first HIM this past September, the inaugural Ironman 70.3 Muskoka in Ontario, Canada.

FAMILY STATUS: In a relationship with a fantastic man (and avid cyclist) who is currently building a base before training for his first ever triathlon at 52!

CURRENT TRAINING:  Off season training for me technically until end of April 2009 but I will begin training in January for a half-mary set to take place in May. I train using an HRM and recently went for a LT and AT assessment on the run and will have the same done for the bike in January.  I have never trained with the help of a coach but I am giving serious considerations into having one for the 2009 season.

LAST YEAR'S RACES: 2008 was a big year for me as I was getting ready to do my first HIM in September.  I had done several races prior to that: a half-mary in May; a 50k fund raising bike ride; a sprint/short course in June; one olympic in July; a 15k run, another olympic and a HIM aquabike in August; a HIM in September; and finally a 10k run on November 2nd which turned out to be a personal best.

2009 RACES:  I will once again tackle a variety of distances in 2009.  I have planned my race schedule already and it will include the following local races:

  • Mississauga or Ottawa Half-Marathon - May 10 or 24
  • Ride for Heart, 75k fund raising ride in Toronto - June 7
  • Guelph Sprint Triathlon - June 20
  • Gravenhurst Olympic Triathlon - July 18
  • K-Town Long Course Triathlon in Kingston - August 2
  • A Midsummer Night's Run, 15k fund raising run in Toronto, August 22
  • Cobourg Olympic Triathlon - August 29
  • Ironman Muskoka 70.3 - September 13
  • Angus Glen Half-Marathon - November 1st

WEIGHTLOSS:  I am currently 22lbs up from 130 in May 2006, with the last 8 gained since the 2008 season ended in September.  I have gained weight ever since I began endurance training. My weight loss objective is to lose those 22lbs (and mabye 3 more) before the beginning of the 2009 race season.

Cheers!

Nathalie

Well here in Western NY we have almost a foot of snow on the ground and it's still coming down. I found an alternate pool while the high school is shut down over the holidays. May be snowshoes might be a nice Christmas gift.
Can I put shoveling snow in my training log?

Hey everybody...Got snowed in today 7 inches and it's still snowing...ugh.
But sent my son to my parents home this afternoon and got a good workout out in!

I'm not sure what I'm signing up for in 2009. I guess whatever I can afford at the time. (yeah, it's like that...lol....)

Oy vey, great weekend.  It was 19 degrees this morning when I left the house.

I'm managing to stay 200+/- lbs, considering my training has been severely lacking (well, outdoor training, that is ) and I've been eating like a horse with all this holiday food flying around.

Once New Year's hits, I can get back on the wagon for continued bad--ery...
