Did the race last year. Many say the run was really bad because it was on grass and sand/dirt.

I would encourage you that if they are not going to change the course that you try to run on grass and dirt as much as possible. I run every day on sand and grass so it was not a shock to me.

To help you understand there is not a trail, sometimes I see people say the trail was too narrow and was hard to pass. It was approximately 20 feet wide with people running in each direction. It gets dusty, hot, very humid, BUT we all had the same conditions. BTW The grass was not very high IMO

So if you train on the same sort of terrain it wont bother you too much.

Good luck and hope to meet some others out there

So is it a trail run along the canal system? Is the entire 13.1 miles on dirt and grass?

2/3 of each loop (3 loop run) is on the . A small bit at the start and end of each loop is on the road within fort wilderness. Wear old socks and running shoes your about to get rid of, as they will be trashed after.

I hate those fees!  I just registered for the Boulder series and instead of $280, was $295!  They should just state $295.  Oh well, it's fast and prices go up on the 15th (this is for 3 races)

How is everyone's training going?  I'm tired already   I keep having to make up missed training on my days off.

My training is slow right now. Still in the "base" faze. Just working on slow and long. Plus hitting the weights and trainer til the weather warms up a bit. One good thing is im only 3lbs heaiver then 70.3 Fla last year. Plus we have our annual super bowl cruise on the 31st. So thats an easy 3-5lbs gained for the week even with spin classes...lol. After we return its full steam ahead...as I like to say, "after the cruise, no more boose"!

I officially started my training yesterday although I've been doing easy stuff the past 4 weeks to get back in shape. Now it is ALL about getting my power/pace high high so no limiting myself to easy stuff (I dont believe in limiting training intensity ) so for the next 6 weeks it will be all about getting my swim frequency to 5x, bike short but hard 3-3x a week and get running again hopefully soon.

Good luck everyone and happy training!

I hear this race is generally not wetsuit legal-
For those who have done the race before what did you wear? Just your trisuit? or do people use swim skins? Just wondering....

I was wondering the same thing about the wetsuit.  I hate wearing a wetsuit, though, so I'm thinking of going with a one piece tri suit--since the top to my 2-piece is a little baggy around the waist I know it causes some drag in the water.

I'm starting to wonder if I should try a different training plan, or back off on some of the running in the one I'm following now and substitute some core work.  I ruptured my appendix in November, couldn't do much in the way of core work (or anything else for that matter) for 6 weeks, then started this 20 week HIM plan.  Well, now my back hurts when I run (duh!).  I'm trying to strengthen my core as well as follow this plan, but it seems to be too much for my back.

I just wore my tri suit, top and shorts. I like the all in one, but feel the two are more comfortable. Its NOT wetsuit legal. Its May in Orlando and the water is about 83 degrees. I did see some swim skins last year as I remember.

I wore the B70 pointzero3 swim skin just cuz I had it. The year before I wore a one piece suit and had no issues, just make sure your tri top (suit) doesn't have baggy back pockest cuz they could act as a parachute

I chose this race as my first at this distance because the swim looked easier than ocean open water swim. Any tips for first timer at this distance (especially on the swim)?

Dave, FL 70.3 was my first HIM as well. When I looked at how far the swim was I was in disbelief. You couldn't even see the turn around it was so far out in the fog.

BUT then I remembered I had swam that far one time in training so I was ready.

I started out swimming a tiny bit faster than I though I could do the full way and found a person within the first 100 yards going about the same speed. I got in behind them and even though it felt TOO easy when I was in their draft I just stayed there the whole way.

I looked up a few times to make sure they were going fairly straight. It went GREAT! I got done with the swim and felt almost as if I had done nothing. Then took the bike definitely slower than I thought I could do it and used what I had left for the run.

GOOD LUCK!

Also, I think you get a discount if you are a USAT member.  I found a discount card for Comfort Inns and their other hotels.  I have it at home.  I will post the code when I get home.

I am a Priceline "name your price" addict and got the Radisson Resort Orlando-Celebration, which looks like it's not too far from W. Irlo Bronson Hwy in Kissimmee, for $50/night.  The pictures look nice...and I've had alot of good luck with Priceline, but if anyone has been there let me know what you thought of it.

Here is newbie question. Can someone tell me how the swim start goes for this race?

It looks like an age group wave start, but is it chaos?

Also, the official site says the swim is counter-clockwise, should I be practicing left side breathing, or just good sighting?

thanks,

Dave...
Last year they had 3-4 "waves" within my age group (40-44) and they started each wave 2-4 min's apart. About 100 guys in each wave. You will always have guys at the front trying to get a fast start and running into the water. Then guys like me hanging to the back letting the quacking settle down at the front before I start, maybe 30 sec later.
As for breathing. Its always best to be able to breath on both sides as it helps if you get into traffic. I only breath on my right and sometimes find it hard to see someone coming up on my left.
You'll have Tri's that swim clockwise and others counter clockwise, so spotting is the most important thing.

I had no idea there was a thread for the race, this is great.  I registered last july because i thought it'd be fun to do as my first HIM, and my cousin only lives about 35 minutes away from the race site.  i herniated a disc in my back in september, and am just now getting back on the bike...but running is a few weeks away at least.  hopefully i'll be good to go come race day!

I stayed at the Sheraton Vistana Resort last year and plan on staying there again this year. I believe it is $109/night for what is bascially a nice one bedroom apartment. Full size living room and kitchen with laundry room, dining room table and a large separate bedroom with large jacuzzi tub. I like having the kitchen and the jacuzzi plus having the separate bedroom for the night before when I hit the sack earlier than wife and kids. It is less than 10 minutes from disney and plenty of places to eat nearby. Check it out..https://www.starwoodvacationownership.com/sheraton_vistana_resort/reservations.jsp

I think it is a timeshare place too but they don't pressure you to go to a presentation, although they do ask.
