Extreme Veteran 484 Glen Burnie, MD | Subject: RE: Ragnar Relay - Cumberland to DC Doing an Ultra team of 6 would be really cool cause then we are all in one van and it's less people to coordinate... and we can all say we did an Ultra relay I think by September, I should be okay with that since it isn't all at once plus I can keep my acupuncturist and massage therapist employed this way That looks like 5 now that have said they are in for an ultra. (Rick, CJ, Me, Steve, strates) darbaugh, mreber - either of you willing to do an Ultra relay? |

Cycling Guru 15134 Fulton, MD | Subject: RE: Ragnar Relay - Cumberland to DC We have until 6/30 to get a team in for the early registration which is $540 ($90 per person) for the ultra. So no rush specifically other than training of course. Edited by Daremo 2009-05-29 2:42 PM |

Expert 1743 Glen Burnie, Maryland | Subject: RE: Ragnar Relay - Cumberland to DC I was looking at the website and the Ultra team members run 2 consecutive legs. So runner one would run Leg 1 & 2 (almost 18 miles), the 2nd runner would run Leg 3 & 4 and so on. Each member would run 3 times. |

Cycling Guru 15134 Fulton, MD | Subject: RE: Ragnar Relay - Cumberland to DC Hmmm, that's actually pretty brutal ...... Especially since they classify leg 1 and 2 as "very hard." 18 miles for me in training would normally be around 2:15 - 2:20 for time. Well, let's see how it plays out and who wants to do it. |

I was thinking the same thing. It does say that you can race with less than 12. You have to contact the race director to get guidance on how the legs would be run. |

That would be super. Why didn't you tell me this before I bought 3 boxes of Gu from performance bike today! |

Master 1584 Fulton, MD | Subject: RE: Ragnar Relay - Cumberland to DC I'm not commiting to this, as I'll have to think about it and look it over, but this sounds really fun to me (the ultra relay). If you can't find a 6th, I may be in... Damn, just reminded I have to go to a wedding. Sorry. Edited by jcnipper 2009-05-29 10:10 PM |

Extreme Veteran 767 Alexandria, VA | Subject: RE: Ragnar Relay - Cumberland to DC One thing to keep in mind, we need to provide two non-running volunteers in addition to all runners (At least for the 12 man team). And Vans as well. As cool as the Ultra thing sounds, it seems like we probably have enough interest to fill the 12 man team. Also note this is the weekend before the Army 10-miler, just sayin. Doesn't bother me, seems a week is plenty of time to recover, but something to think about. Just some thoughts, but unfortunately, no experience on the organization side, and negative free time, so I am avoiding the captains hat as well. |

Member 44 | Subject: RE: Ragnar Relay - Cumberland to DC I want to do this! I really wanted to do American Odyssey but couldn't put together a team in time. I'm sure my sister will want to run it too. So that's 2 possible people if you don't mind two girls who are a little slower (5k - 25:58, 10k- 52:06, half mar. - 2:02). I completely understand and won't be offended if that's too slow for you guys! |

Christy don't you have some impressive excel spreadsheet with everyones names on it? LOL!!! You might just be right, both of you I can't believe they make you do 2 legs back to back if you do the ultra! I guess considering that would be an average of 32.2 miles with 2242ft of climbing per person, if we can find the people it would be more enjoyable and less torturous if we did a 12 man team. And seriously, 3 volunteers, not counting van drivers?? It says they only have to do 4-6 hr shifts, so hopefully we won't have a problem finding people. If you all don't mind a relay-newbie assuming the captains chair, I can put on the hat and get a parrot since we need to get serious commitments and start planning the vans and other logistics. It looks like they have a pretty dang elaborate "race bible" that explains anything and everything we will need to know. Everyone who is in for a regular 12-man relay, send me a PM with your Name, E-mail Addr, and Phone # so we can start a less-public email thread and get coordinated as a team This is going to be fun |

Extreme Veteran 484 Glen Burnie, MD | Subject: RE: Ragnar Relay - Cumberland to DC I should clarify.. send me your info if you are most-likely in and then we can talk about the details of cost, renting vans, getting enough volunteers (or paying the 120$ substitution fee), legs to run, etc. Sending in the money will be your actual commitment - which will be by June 30th. What are your thoughts on Ultra vs 12-man? If the 6 of us who spoke up about the Ultra are really pumped for that and would rather feasibly do that, then speak up; if you are ambivalent, say so too |

Cycling Guru 15134 Fulton, MD | Subject: RE: Ragnar Relay - Cumberland to DC I would do either. Although I would need to ramp up the mileage to do the ultra (which I will need to after E-Man anyway for my 2 marathons in October). So I guess I'm "ambivalent" for the moment. |

Pro 4054 yep, | Subject: RE: Ragnar Relay - Cumberland to DC I guess I'll be the first one to say that running 16 miles or doing loops back to back wouldn't be really easy. I'd really have to ramp up the miles like Rick.
But I guess its Doable. I'd prefer like a 10 man team or something. Figuring I'd be able to do 1 - 8mile loop every say 4 turns or something.
I have yet to read the bible captin to really understand all the rules. I'm more of a tell me what I need to do and where I need to be kinda person. |

Extreme Veteran 767 Alexandria, VA | Subject: RE: Ragnar Relay - Cumberland to DC Just bored at work and did a quick search. Looks like Budget says it's going to be about $100 a day for a single "Full Size Passenger Van" Rental would have to be for 3-4 days, considering pick up and drop off times. So at a minimum, to rent 2 of these would run us $600. There may be other options, if anybody has ideas, speak up. |

The relay has set up a discount through Enterprise. It's about 55$ per day per van but we have to pick them up Thurs PM and return Mon AM since all the greater b-more enterprise locations are closed on Sunday. It ends up being about $250/van. It's unlimited mileage as long as the vans stay in the state and boarding states. My friend works for the YMCA and has access to passenger vans so I'm gonna hit her up too and see if she would want to be a driver if we could use the van. The vehicles can't be over 6'6" wide or longer than 20' (no buses, motor homes, or limos) so we're pretty much stuck with 15 passenger vans. Make sure you send me your info. I'm going to send out my address in an email this weekend with lots more details from the Race Bible and the first 11 to get me money are on the team I figured I'll collect the registration fee plus some money for the vans - about $130/person. Start recruiting volunteers now because we will all owe another 30$ per person if we can't find 3 volunteers. Here's more info about volunteers. Steve's girlfriend has graciously offered to be a van driver which leaves an opening for one more van driver so start talking the experience up to your wives/husbands/girlfriends/boyfriends (they are good for these kinds of things ) amilwee - We'd love to have you and your sister on the team The only pace restriction is an average of 11min/mile. We do have to come up with a "predicted pace" before we register (and there is a penalty if we deviate too much from it) so there are LOTS of things we have to coordinate on. I'll get the ball rolling on all of it this weekend in that email, so again, make sure you send me your info Since no one is hard pressed on doing the Ultra, let's do a traditional Relay ... this year ~Christy |
