I've been a bit concerned about this lately...I don't have a wet suit, so...water temp makes me nervous.  Anyone have thoughts on how long it will take for the water to get ... warmer?  =)

no worries!  the water has a month to enjoy the warm iowa sunshine and it will heat itself up to nice and tolerable levels

let us not burn up energy worrying about things that are not in our control.  let us instead focus on our last four weeks of training and get ready to have a kick a$$ time in des moines.  i'm going to have fun, and you're going to have fun.  i am excited!  almost time to play!

I think historically the race is border line FOR NO WETSUITS, so I wouldn't worry about the cold water.....all those snakes and snapping turtles Yes but that the cold (totally kidding btw)

I hadn't even thought about a wet suite.  Glad to hear that it is not necessary.  The cold water will just make us all swim faster

I've done the Hy-Vee for the past four years. The first year the race was on June 17th and the water was too warm for wet suits. The next year the race was on June 22nd and even though it was later than the previous year, it was wet suit legal because of all the rain (some may remember that the tri was changed to a du because of bacteria levels in the water but then was switched back to a tri about 5 day before the race). Last year the race was on June 28th and again the water was too warm to allow wet suit. I'm betting that because the race is quite a bit earlier this year (June 13th), it will most definately be wet suit legal. Having an extra 7-14 days of 80+ temperatures really makes a difference. Regardless, if you can swing a wet suit, it would be a good idea in my opinion. They really do make you go faster and even if the water is 70 degrees, that's still cold to me so it helps me stay warm. However, you have to be able to take it off faster than the amount of time you save by wearing it so practice that if you get one.

I'm so excited to do this event. My family is excited to go as well so they can enjoy the event. Only thing is this will be my first Olympic distance. But from what I've heard it is a event you never forget.

It will be my first Olympic distance as well as my first ever triathlon!  I am excited, but also a bit nervous.  I'm glad that I have Noz as a guide as well as the rest of you.  Thanks all for your advice and insight.

The crazy thing about last year, kif you remember, was that it was set to be wetsuit legal up until the last week before the race.  Then we got two weeks of 90+ temps in a row and it climbed to 82 degrees at the start.  It was hot as could be after not having a 90 degree day up to that point in the year.
I checked the wwater temp this morning and it was 59 degrees (it has been cold and rainy here lately).  It is supposed to wrm up for the  next two weeks.  I'll take the temps evry now and again and let y'all know where we are as wego.  I'm going to guess wetsuit legal unless we get the same warm streak for a couple of weeks again.  We haven't had an 80 plus degree day here yet.

FYI, there's a water temp monitor on the official Hy-Vee Tri website. Says the water is 65 degrees as of two hours ago.

Curious to see how much that grows now that its offically getting normal weather around here. I hope its right around 76 when the even happens. As long as the race director doesn't find my secret scuba diver below pulling me from underground.

One thing I was going to ask when is the starting time on Sunday. I know they are going to do waves but as of now it just says 6am. My family wants to come and watch but not sure what will happen if it starts that early.

I thought the bike course was supposed to be flat.  That doesn't look too flat to me.

It's really not as bad as the elevation map would have you believe. Yes, there is a gradual incline leading up to the turnaround point, but it's better that it's on the first half of the ride and not the second half. The run course has a very challenging hill to it, and a second moderate hill by Southwoods. Get your hill work in now if you haven't already.

The other thing to remember is that once you clear cemetery hill for the second time, it's a coast to the finish.  Either downhill or flat all the way in.  When you pass the cemetrary on the way back, that is your last mental hurdle.

You see - I have an issue with the wat that they are posting that temp.  As a uSAT rule, the temp is taken first thing in the am - i usually want it done by the time transition opens.  They took that 71 degree temp at 11 aM.  You can figyre a couple degrees lower.  I will take it this morning and see what it is - as well as posting an exact time.

Anyone know what is going on race day. I have family that want to come down to watch the race but all they have posted is it starts at 6qm and that is it. I know its a wave start but when do they start letting the waves go. Just so I can plan on when I need to be there and when my family should plan to show up as well.

Last year they sent the elites off at 6 AM sharp. I think then the waves were sent off every three minutes after that. I believe they sent off the para athletes at 6:03, and then the 30-34 year old males at 6:06. After that I couldn't tell you. Maybe email someone on the Hy-Vee site in the contact info. for specifics.
