WelshinPhilly - 2010-02-16 3:40 PM Been enjoying this recently:

^ Glenmorangie is a classic!  Have to put Glenrothes on the list to try also.  Glenfiddich is what got me started on this Scotch path of corruption and I like their 18 year a lot.

True story:  In Inverness we went into the hotel bar b4 dinner and I ordered a scotch and the bartender asked my what kind...I was a real rookie then and said Glenfiddich, as that was about the only single malt all I knew...he looked at me and said, "Ahhh, why that rotgut, here try this."  ...and he poured me Glenmorangie....

For those of you who like Macallan and have access to a Costco I would highly recommend that you check out their liqour store regularly.  I discovered a couple of months ago that Kirkland (Costco brand) imports scotch directly from Macallan and then sells it under their own label.  I have seen some with just the Kirkland name and others that have both names on the label.  The 15 year typically sells for about $40 but the reason that I suggest checking regularly is because sometimes they will get a shipment of 18 year that they sell for $50 but it goes quickly.  It's a great deal as long as you are not hung up on having the Kirkland label on it.

Lagavulin is probably my favorite.

There's also a Macallan cask-strength that I like a lot.

Lagavulin is probably my favorite.

You could save a lot of coin by just chewing on a peat pot, and you won't need the cigar either.

2 years ago Laphroaig  stopped shipping to Atlantic Canada so Lag's the best  Islay available here now.

I should add that the Macallan's price has increased much more slowly than that of most of its counterparts, and as such is now a bargain compared to others that have increased prices to make them seem more high end, such as Oban. Cragganmore is also a very good value, but not at the Macallan's level.

couple of my preferences:

Balvenie (Port Wood) 21.  the founders reserve is much more reasonable $$$ and still very good.

Laphroaig - haven't tried them all, but have not had a bad experience with any Laphroaig

And another vote for the Glenfiddich 18 year.

I agree with everybody about Laphroaig, but as much as I love it...it's not an every day Scotch.  I really have to be in the mood before I pull out my bottle of Laphroaig.

On a trip to Scotland a couple of years ago, we took a small tour to the Highlands and our guide took us to the smallest distillery... Edradour (www.edradour.co.uk); unfortunately, it's such a small distillary that I've only been able to find and buy one bottle in the two years since I've been there.  Smoothest 10 year single malt I've had, and with a cigar from the Cigar Factory in New Orleans (www.cigarfactoryneworleans.com) a nce end to a long week at work.

Agreed. For everyday stuff I like JW Black.  I don't know much about Scotch, I'm more of a wine person.

I am actually more of a wine guy too, but I like a nip 'o the scotch once in awhile and enjoy trying different ones.

Oban is definitely my favourite - can't believe how expensive it is in Vancouver though!

Try Utah.  I bought a bottle of The Macallan (25-year) for $200 right before moving to Utah, where the price was $350.  WTF!

I love Macallan 18....and if I can't find (or afford, sigh) it, I go with 18-year Glenfidditch. Scotch is AMAZING.

Oban was my gateway scotch.  It's been an expensive trip and I wouldn't take anything for it.

Except for my next bottle, maybe.

I guess I'm a little ghetto since my standby is also Chivas Regal. I've tried several different brand available here in Honolulu but Chivas Regal has that bit of rock-gut bite that I really enjoy. Laughing

For all of you who love Lagavulin but don't like the hefty price tag, I suggest you head over to your local Trader Joe's and pick up a bottle of Finlaggan. It is a single malt Islay scotch and rumor has it that it's basically just young Lagavulin (and it does taste like that to me). For $17.99 I think it's one of the best values on the market today.

You're really making me miss living in CA. In MI, TJ's can't sell liquor, just beer and wine. It's a sad sad fact. TJ's had Laphroaig for a great price too, but it seems the Great Lakes State won't stand for it -- suffer the 6 month winters without affordable scotch it seems.

I bought a bottle of Highland Park on Sat. but haven't tried it yet.  I went with it after doing some web browsing and decided that trying a bottle of Scotch from the Orkneys was just too temtping to pass up.  Here is my list of next possible bottles:

Aberlour

Ardberg

Aucheoshan

Bladnoch

Bruichladdich

Glenfarclas

Glenrothes
