Subject: RE: M-Dot in Charlotte?HumanVelocity - 2010-08-23 11:04 AM The thing that kills me is that the Lake Norman Tri is in jeopardy of being cancelled next year because of the traffic issue it creates for 600-800 people for a few hours on a Saturday and Sunday morning.
But in comes the WTC and voila, they get the approvals, and by the way, we will be clogging up the roads from 7am to 3:30pm for maybe 2000-3000 people racing.
Got to love City council double standards.
For gods sake, LN Tri benefits the Outreach program for the community. Agree, that's disappointing. Especially if you consider the traffic impact is minimal. The first swim wave starts at 7AM and the last at 7:35 (I think ). So, you have a super fast guy from the first wave out of the water, through T1, mount up and up to Hwy 115 at about 7:15 and the last guy from the last wave coming through at about 8:05 or so. So, the traffic is stopped intermittently for less than an hour getting the triathletes onto Hwy 115 and there are no closed roads anywhere. The car traffic passes by just like any other time, except there are just more cyclists to pass. They do usually have a cop up on 115 and Midway Lakes stopping traffic as needed and at one spot on Jackson St. I just don't see much impact on traffic, especially considering the amount of traffic on the road at 7-8AM on Saturday and Sunday mornings. The run through the neighborhood behind the Y surely doesn't create any problems. In fact, last year there were a lot of people out on the course cheering people on from their folding chairs on their front lawns. I love doing my long rides early on the weekends specifically because the roads are almost empty. Can't believe anyone is actually complaining about the tri traffic. There is no question there are a hell of a lot more people doing the triathlon than driving anywhere at that time of the day on the weekend. Sheesh. |
