Veteran 190 Lakeville, Minnesota | Subject: RE: Ford Ironman Wisconsin : Official Thread tasr - 2010-09-22 8:28 AM OK I finally got in to Ironman Wisconsin 2011. I went the route of the Ironman Foundation so this will be a little interesting. I want to thank all that will donate and supported me. There are some very generous people on BT. So to start the thread rolling and to beat IMLP 2010 thread count. I’ll ask; 1. Is this your first IM? YES (I turn fifty this year and thought it would be a good way to celebrate). |

Veteran 190 Lakeville, Minnesota | Subject: RE: Ford Ironman Wisconsin : Official Thread PennState - 2010-09-22 12:49 PM Any suggestions on where to stay? I will be going with my wife and 2 daughters, so looking for a family friendly place. Also, what are peoples off season plans for training? If your kids are younger, I stayed at the Hampton Inn West (a fairly new hotel) and they have a pretty good pool for kids. Even though I am a little older (50) my wife and I adopted two kids that are now four and five. We stayed at the Hampton Inn this year and plan to stay there for next years race. They have a shuttle (large tour bus) that runs every hour to downtown on race day, I took it this year to volunteer and was downtown in fifteen minutes. The hotel is about five miles from one of the large hills on the bike course that is great for spectators and easy to get to. It was also pretty easy to drive my own vehicle back and forth to downtown and I had no problem with parking. Maybe not the most convenient for you but a pretty good setup for the family. I booked it through the Ironman website and the rate for next year is $129 a night. |

Veteran 257 Iowa | Subject: RE: Ford Ironman Wisconsin : Official Thread 1. Is this your first IM? Yes...did 2 HIM's this past season and ready to make the jump. 2. Have you done IMWI before? No 3. What are your goals for the 2011 race? As of right now, just make it to the start healthy and finish...once it gets a little closer, I may have a secret time goal...but I want to enjoy the day and not worry so much about the finish time. 4. How/Why did you select the Ironman Wisconsin race? I live in Iowa and is about a 7 hr drive, so fairly close to me...I have also heard from others about the amazing atmosphere. 5. Do you have any specific questions that you wish addressed about IMWI; the race, training etc...? Hopefully there will be a couple opportunities for this group to get together on some training weekends throughout next summer to preview the course. |

4. How/Why did you select the Ironman Wisconsin race? It is close to home (about 2.5 hour drive) and I hear the spectator support is one of the best at this one. I also hear the venue is great too.

They have a pool, an outdoor basketball court and it is on a walking trail. I live about 5 minutes from here and it took me no more than 20-25 minutes to drive to Monona Terrace, park and hit transition the morning of the event. |

It was on the square opposite of transition. Maybe a 5 - 8 minute walk. Had no complaints, rooms were nice and spacious. Concourse Hotel Edited by mattb1 2010-09-23 1:30 PM |

Very much appreciated! Here is another question? What gearing would the wisconsin vets suggest for the bike course? Not a Wisconsin "Vet"... but a Silverman vet, and due to $ and that course, I ride a compact with a 12-25. It worked perfectly for Wisconsin last year! |

Pro 4608 Brooklyn, NY | Subject: RE: Ford Ironman Wisconsin : Official Thread PennState - 2010-09-24 8:53 AM My guess is that it really depends on the ability of the rider regarding the gearing that works best for you on any given course.I suspect that people will ride mainly standard cranks with a fair number of folks choosing compacts. I would guess most people would ride a 12-25 cassette because that's what standardly comes on most bikes. My early plan is a standard with a 12-25, but am debating an 11-23 as well. I definitely would like to ride the course first to get a feel for best gearing choices. Since there tend to be a lot of first-timers at this race and you hear a lot about how hard the hills are, a lot of folks will tell you to get a 12-27, but as you know it's not necessary for most people. You're such a strong cyclist that an 11-23 will probably be fine, but good that you'll get to ride the course first and see for yourself. Most people ride a 12-25 with a compact, that's my plan. |

I definitely would like to ride the course first to get a feel for best gearing choices. Actually to add to that, I found myself wishing I were on my road bike more than once during the race. It's mostly because I have shifted to enjoying the road bike a tremendous amount more than my tri bike, but I also think the course is well suited for one. I've done a few centuries on the roadie, but fear an IM on it would leave my upper body too tired for the run. Bummer. |
