Master 2426 Central Indiana | Subject: RE: "You're over doing it" - WTH!!! Talk about my training???? Guilty as charged. Don't boast, but it comes up in conversation. When asked "What did ya do this weekend?", I answer honestly. Not gonna make up stuff about about the NBA game I didn't watch or the bar I didn't go to. If I tell you I rode a century or ran 10 miles & you think that's "overdoing it", pardon me if I beg to differ. And when my doc (of 20+ yrs) asks why my total cholesterol is only 131, my LDL is 59, my BMI is "only" 23 & resting HR is 48 (on NO beta blocker), he deserves a straight answer. I run/bike/swim A LOT (by community standards). I'm only MOP/BOP around here, but this 53 yo non-athlete is in the best shape of his life. Apologize for the tri lifestyle??????? I think not.

She may have also used the word "crazy" I'm not certain, but that was definitely the message. Luckily he is also a triathlete so just laughed it off with me. How interesting would life be if we could all comment so freely on everyone's choices without getting punched in the face. Winner! Wouldn't you like to be able to go up to all the obese people and say, "You are really over eating. I mean way over eating and it is going to make your shortened life miserable." |

Expert 1203 | Subject: RE: "You're over doing it" - WTH!!! Flapjack - 2011-03-07 10:42 AM Seriously- I am long way from overdoing it. And yet there are people who think that I am doing too much "for a guy my age". A guy my age just croaked from a heart attack. He was doing "age appropriate" things. You know watching football all day on Sunday. Leave me be....exercising every day is good!! Especially when your job makes you sit in a chair all day. Hahahaha, I am going to add that one to my memory bank for future reference. |

Most of my friends my age (57) are either couch potatoes or spend their weekends riding in golf carts followed by drinking beer in the clubhouse. They think I'm a bit eccentric, but I also think there's some jealousy involved. Mark |

53 | Subject: RE: "You're over doing it" - WTH!!! I hear it all the time. But there's a pretty big difference between exercising and training. If you're exercising obsessively to lose weight that's unhealthy. I have to remind my friends that I don't exercise - I train. As far as weight, yours sounds healthy, but remember 60% of adults in this country are overweight, and the rest aren't in great shape. When you take an athlete who is relatively lean and fit, it probably looks pretty extreme. We're getting to a place in our society where the only people who are fit at all are athletes! Ignore the naysayers. Educate your friends and family, and keep on truckin' |

Regular 92 Jacksonville | Subject: RE: "You're over doing it" - WTH!!! I was talking to a couple of guys at my wife’s 20th high school reunion, and they were calling me insane for doing a sprint. How triathlons were going to ruin my knees and how I was going to crap my pants trying to cross the finish line. One guy was 39, the other guy was 44 and they were both talking about the different blood pressure medicines (PLURAL) they were on. They casually accept that they’re going to be dead in 15 years but I’m insane because I might have cartilage issues 20 years after they’re dead. The whole think shook me a little bit. It was a genuine “There but for the grace of God” moment. |

Pro 6767 the Alabama part of Pennsylvania | Subject: RE: "You're over doing it" - WTH!!! brucemorgan - 2011-03-07 12:00 PM Yes, this is super common, especially if you're the only one in your circle of family / friends / coworkers who has taken up training recently. What you are doing is out-of-their-ordinary, so some of them will praise it, others will think you weird but say nothing (or at least to you), and sadly too many will criticize you for it. The other point you bring up is your appearance (weight isn't it, it's your "leaner" look). The "new normal" in America is flat out fat, so anyone less than that looks abnormal. In 1980, you could be lean and look athleticm but in 2011, it's considered unhealthy by many. 5'" and 161 = BMI of 23.8. WIth the normal range considered 18.5 - 24.9, depending on your build you're not even lean yet. As I've posted before, watch old movies and see how people looked. Even the fat characters weren't so fat. I watched Smokey and the Bandit a few weeks ago. Remember Jackie Gleason's Buford T. Justice, the "fat Southern sheriff". Hardly looks overweight by today's standards. All three of the Bellevue cops I saw the other day at Starbucks were fatter than Buford T. Justice, even accounting for their vests. Look at this link to a picture of him from The Honeymooners where he played the "fat bus driver" Ralph Cramden. This was "fat" in 1955: http://www.imdb.com/media/rm3708915200/nm0001276 He's barely heavyset by today's standards. Watch Breaking Away. http://www.imdb.com/media/rm1034394112/tt0078902 That was "normal" teenagers in 1979. Walk the mall and see if that's normal in 2011. Actually, the problem cuts both ways. What was once considered a healthy look no longer looks that way. Think about George Reeves, the TV Superman of the 1950's. He would not make it as an action star today:
He has a noticeable paunch, and no defined muscles in either his chest, arms, or legs. I think part of the reason so many people are fat is partly because the "ideals" are so unrealistic and unattainable (outside of chemical and surgical enhancements). Consider pr0n from the 70's - people were saggy and hairy. Now they are all sleek and enhanced. Who can acheive or compete with those looks? When the ideals are too far removed from reality, most people will stop trying to acheive them. Plus the cheap sugars in our diet don't help. |

I guess yes, I am getting irritated with that, simply due to the fact I am not "skinny". I think I have worked pretty hard to be in the shape I am in, and even that isn't where I want to be. I am just tired of the "you're over doing it" comments, when they really have no clue what I do. It's not like I have lost a lot of weight. 7-9 pounds since December. I am not looking to lose weight, and have no plans of losing anymore, I am just looking to get in better physical and cardio shape, be healthy, and get faster! I also follow the plan pretty darn closely and am not struggling or injuring myself. |

The paunch is from alcohol. The lack of arm or chest muscles is worse than you think -- he's got a 'muscle shirt' on. (Not that I have chest or arm muscles, mind you -- but I'm not superman either.) |

Next to her, I'm a complete slacker! 10 years ago, I had friends who said I was 'excessive' because I was active for an hour or so every day. Now that same schedule barely touches the workouts that most of my friends do. And certainly, no one would even notice if I drink water instead of wine some evening because they often do the same when a big event is on the horizon. I'm still friends with those other less active people, I just don't hang out with them on a regular basis as much. We are all a bit happier for it, I think. |

Nothing better than a "get over it" response, I love it.
I know personally, some of my family/friends are in to things I'd never dream of doing, and frankly don't understand. But I go to their events, am supportive, ask questions/listen to their experiences and let them know I am proud of them- even if I don't "get it" all the way. Lots of us are experiencing the opposite, and that's not exactly something that's easy to "get over", especially when they are friends or family.

Bad troll. I don't think he was complaining that he is too skinny. I read he was upset because other people are telling him he's too skinny. I've not been accused of that as an adult but was as a teen by a chubby friend and she always said it in a very rude/mean way trying to hurt my feelings telling me I looked like a kid from one of the 'save the kids' commercials. I did not. She was just jealous I was thinner than her. I actually think you are the one acting rude telling someone to get over it. None of us want to be judged by our physical appearance.

Member 108 | Subject: RE: "You're over doing it" - WTH!!! rizer22 - 2011-03-07 10:21 AM I am sure this has been a thread before. But does anyone ever get tired of hearing from friends and family members that "you exercise too much" or "you're over doing it" I am in my 6th week of the BT Olympic, Bike Focused, Tri plan. I follow the running and biking as it calls for, but am lacking in the swim. Either way, I am probably in the best cardio shape I have ever been in. I've never had a weight issue, but since I have leaned out and cut my body fat % down, I probably look leaner than I have in the past. I'm 5'9", 161 pounds. I don't think that is too skinny, but people think they have the right to say so! Why do people need to comment on these things??? I am just curious if other people get this? I do not know if you speak to or have spoken to others about your fantastic fitness goals but I suggest you keep your mouth shut tight. If you have people in your circle who are not in shape or have no fitness goals like you, the conversation should not take place. Years ago I was in a similar situation with weight loss and fitness gaining. I talked to a few friends about what I was doing and damn near everyone in town knew my business and thought I was using Meth. I don't know what that stuff looks like but to them, it must have been good for me. I dropped a third of myself in months and had no problem with it, only with the talk. The talk came from those who did not care enough about themselves to shape up and work it out. Forward some years and these very people have been forced into Lap Bands, Gastric bypass and all of the rest yet will no longer tell me that I am too thin because I am not. I am what they dream to look like. Many of those friends were flushed down the toilet with my morning waste because that is all they were to me. Waste. Now that I am on a training plan, I do not talk to others about it, even to my multi-sport friends. I do my thing and don't want to talk about it. By the way, I am sure at 161, you look good and feel the same. Keep up the good work. |
