synthetic - 2011-03-10 9:51 AM Why do people drive out to an area that they will bike or run....  this annoys me, there is no justifcation. If you are particular about location, bike or run there!!

I do it because I know it annoys you.

I'm going to start doing because it annoys him.

OP, please let us know where you see this behavior most often.

considering the 20 mile stretch from where i live to where i drive to ride is a 60 mph single lane highway, full of raging hungover students texting and driving, and crazy 18 wheelers, i think i'll prioritize my life over the few gallons of gas i'm spending and keep driving...

sesh - 2011-03-10 12:27 PM Because I like to spend time with my wife.

I like riding the Natchez Trace as opposed to residential streets and city streets around me.  When I take my car, I knock off what would be about two travel hours.

So to answer your question.  Because training isn't the most important thing in my life.  I love my wife more and those two hours I would otherwise waste on a Saturday mean something to both of us.

Justified enough for you?

kind of hard to have sex in the car while driving.

We as athletes are something people look up to. I am into functional fitness.... biking to the grocery store for groceries, etc .  If an unfit person sees us biking 1 mile to the store they maybe more prone to do it, rather than racking gear off and on a car, driving out somewhere, makes it less appealing. I lived in holland and it opened up my eyes to how wasteful we are with out convenieces.

Its even harder to have sex while riding my bike.  Lets all stop feeding the troll.

surely there are side roads to get there too...

I will allow one justification, if you live in a snowed out area and are driving 100 miles to a location with rideable conditions you are pardoned...

holland may have more dedicated cycle lanes, but here there a cities with good routes/infrastructure, take socal.

Now this maybe conterversial , but also we can show some of these drunk drivers who live in close proximity to a city that biking out to the bar and back might be a safer-cost effective-sobering alternative, pending mass adoption

Wait, so if I'm drunk, it'd be safer for me to ride my fixie home than call a cab?

It's a risk you should take to reduce your carbon footprint.

You're ignoring the cost effective-sobering parts of the equation.  You focusing too much on safety.

That's not sensible.  It may be safer than driving a car but would still be dangerous and illegal.  You can still get a DUI if you are riding a bike.  I remember something about Bike riders have to obey the same traffic laws as a motorists...including DUI laws.

Maybe OP lives in a bike friendly area.  I do not.  I've been hit a couple times and cussed at several others by drivers who don't believe cyclists should be on the road.  Don't really feel like doing that again if that's okay by senior Synthetic.

funny this came up..AND that the OP is from Holland....

funny because what i usually do for my training rides is pack my bike and fly it to NY, thus burning jet fuel.  After that, i board a coal burning ship and take that to Holland, all the while throwing all my trash overboard.  Sometimes we burn some extra oil on the surface of the water just for fun.  Then, i do my 10 mile training ride, and reverse the trip back to Nashville.

Most people complain the cab is expensive, and indeed it is

as for biking drunk, its less likely you are to kill someone else on a bike.

Ok, so say I ride my bike home, I'm drunk, and swerve in front of a car and get killed. It's going to be much more of a headache than if I would have just called a cab.

You're doing it wrong.

Maybe his seat is too high?

On second thought, I know it is.

On driving to train: I like to train how I race. I will be driving to races. Ergo. . .

That doesn't work, either.  Then you get nailed for public intoxication.

Oh, come on.  If you're running down the street between Midnight and 2am, wearing Newtons, no socks, a one-piece tri kit, Fuel Belt and an Ironman (c) visor - what cop in their right mind is going to bother you?

How did the food get to the grocery store?  Why aren't you growing your own food in your backyard?

Wow --- thanks for the permission, your grace.... But wouldn't it be better to hop on a trainer or treadmill indoors (perhaps attached to a power generator to further reduce our emissions) than to drive 100 miles to train? But then again, if we did that, none of those fat slobs who are looking up to the example we're setting would be able to see us....

bibriley:

mass farming is more cost effective and I walk to my grocery store which is 1km away

the food gets there by truck, that pollution is more necessary than the kind caused by a recreational athlete

Good idea.  Tactical deception...I like it.  However, dressed like that, I'm pretty sure you're going to get your a** kicked at the bar.

Well, you definitely won't be taking anyone home with you, that's for sure.
