As part of a December participant (and I also ended up going 120k in january), I say that instead of increasing your distance by 10%, you should increase your speed/pace times by 10%. If you're doing 200s on 3min (180sec), you should get that around 2:50 to 2:45

So Fresh,

That sounds like a good Idea. Maybe it can become tha bases for another Solo or team challange  that could include running or biking aswell.   This challange was set up to get people to increase their distance based on the Dec challange goal. (Same pricipal as Bear with TITS.)

My personal goal aside from this challange is to increase my '' race pace''  in the swim to something around 1:30/100m.  for an Oly distance and 1:20/100m for a sprint.  How would you set the standard to gauge the increase in time.  Would we need to have a TT at the end of each month to compair times??

I think that's an interesting idea, but to increase swim pace by 10% seems VERY tough in one month. In only 3 months, that would mean someone would go from 2:00/100yds -> 1:48 -> 1:37 -> 1:27. That's a LOT. I highly doubt anyone could do that.

Tom,

In my case,I must agree.  Looking at the numbers, for myself that would be impossable.  I have been working for the last year to shave off a few seconds.  For people who are just starting out, new swimmers to the sport, I think this may be possable.  10% might be a bit of a high target.  2%-3% might work better.  In the first few month of swimming I think that as overall conditioning increase, overall times will drop fast upto the boundry line where speed vs technique meet for a given person.

I say 19,360yds ( march goal) + 10% would be fair.  Unless your training plan for the month of April has you doing more distance use that as your goal.

That works for me. This month I have been doing LOTS LESS running due to marathon recovery; this gives me more time to swim this month (which is aiding in my recovery, too). Next month - April - I should be back to training in all 3 sports. To maintain the same level of swim training as I am now doing would be ignoring some significant mitigating factors.

Not trying to wimp out; just laying the facts out there.

Renée, sounds totally reasonable to me.  Looked at your logs, better get to the pool.  I think it's so neat the you have the chance to do some OWS.   Up here, some guys are still out on the lake with there trucks ice fishing.   Holding my breath for spring.....I think it right around the corner.

How is everybody else doing?

I am at 21,200m of my 26,620 goal.  Just about 80%.  I had planned to not swim this week due to the fact that my wife was away on business. I managed to call in a favor and shell out some cash and was able to find sitters for the kids.

This is going to be a quite thread next month

This weekend will be spent shopping.  I am experiencing a transferral of mass. All my work dress pants are getting too big and my dress shirts too small.  This is getting to be an exspensive sport.

Right on Target here!  With 54% of the month past, I'm at 70% of goal!  30K plus yards of swimming this month is a lot !   Whew!

I'll make goal this month for sure.

As I expected, I'm quite a bit ahead of pace with over 85% of March's distance done so far. I'll be away for a few days over the end of March and beginning of April though so I shouldn't overshoot by as much as I might have. I'll also be catching up, at first, once I get back in April.

I'm beginning to think it might take a while to end this challenge unless we set a final month and accept everyone still in as multiple winners. Or, we can keep going the way we are. The onset of better biking and running weather in north america might start cutting in to swim time and thin out our numbers.

Heh, I know what you mean Mike. I'll need a new belt soon or risk losing my pants. and I've already cut an extra hole in it to keep it working this long.

Thanks Steve once again.  Dwayne, great job in the pool.  2/3 of the month down and your are already finished...time for that nice cool-one.

I need 3420m to complete.  I might get 3000m tonight depending on the swim set.  There is free swim tonight after masters. Depending on how I feel,  I just might stay for a few extra minutes and finish it out and get in line behind Dwayne.

After getting to the pool late due to the slowest frieght train I have ever seen, I find that I have left my suit at home. Like a bat out of hell, pool to home, home to pool and I am in the water 20 minutes late. We have an expression that we tell our son before the start of each of his hockey games to get him motivated, or we would like to think so....... '' GO BIG OR GO HOME''........ He doesn't have a competitive bone in his body.  Last night I went BIG.  Finished my goal and then some.  I stayed a little later than I would have liked but got it done.

I'm on schedule, but still have a  LONG way to go.  Roughly 7000 yards to make goal this month.  Ordinarily, I wouldn't panic, but I have a race this weekend and so instead of my usual 2500 yard Thursday workout, it'll likely only be about a 1000 yarder (can you say taper?) and plus the 300 meters for the race.  Still have a week to make my goal, but it's ominous.

I'm behind schedule but making good ground. At 9600 of 16400 yds. Plan to get in swims most weekdays this week and next, so I should make it.

Keep up the good work everyone!!

I am currently at 13,500 which puts me 23,460 away from my goal.

If I swim 2,600 yards everyday for the remainder of the month, I would make goal. That ain't gonna happen and it would be counterproductive if I did that - I've got my first Oly in 5.5 weeks which means I have to spend more time with those other 2 sports. I'm just not motivated enough to getup early and swim in the morning so that I can run or bike in the evening.

If I swim 3,400 yards for 7 of the next 9 days, I would make goal. I don't know if that will be very productive (and it would require that I get my butt out of bed early). I don't want to log yards just for the sake of logging yards for the challenge.

Not making any predictions just yet. I'll see what I can do between now and Sunday; I'll have a clearer picture by the end of this weekend.

Hmmmm... maybe I'll try swimming in the morning. I've got to have good, solid workouts when I do the swims, not just junk miles for the sake of the challenge.

Ok, that's my thinking outloud post.

Oh man!

No, I'm not quitting. I'm calculating what it would take to accomplish my crazy goal. Then I'm analyzing how much sense it makes to reach the goal.

I haven't thrown in the towel. Just trying to be smart about my overall training, as well as this crazy challenge.
