Hi All!

When I started training in October and not knowing what to do I picked up the 13 week Sprint plan and set out on that which would bring me to just into the New Year. I found this a great way in but after 7 weeks I joined the local Tri Club (Longford, Ireland) and signed up for a 6 week 1hr swim session which meant Friday 9pm-10pm was taken up. I then left the plan and set out to the following:

Sunday 13-16 mile bike

Monday Rest

Tuesday 5k run

Wednesday 13-16 mile bike or 5k run

Thursday 5 k run

Friday Swim (as above)

Saturday Rest

I am going to "tick over" the Christmas period. I have a 5k Charity Run lined up for St Stephen's Day which will be my first ever Run Race!!!

I start the swim sessions again 6th January 2012 and find then really good, not only the fact there are 12-20 of us training together but it focuses you to push harder too.

What I need then are ideas on bike and run training. The Tri Club will be running weekly sessions come the warmer weather which I will try to join (family permitting).

I have a mountain bike and am considering using this for my first Tri's, What do you guys think?

I am running 5k in circa 30 mins and want to reduce this time and I also want to increase distance too. What do you suggest first on increasing pace and then upping the distance? I am guessing two different approaches will be required but will bow to your expertise.

I have a Sprint Tri signed up for 3rd June 2012

I am looking at completing at least two others possibly 30th June 2012 and mid July 2012 both Sprints too.

My club is also running an Aquathlon 29th May 2012 which I will probably do as well.

I am hoping that with the training and all this that I will definitely see the back of the 30lbs I want to lose!

All thoughts, views and help greatly appreciated.

I know I can do this and am prepared to put the work in and learn from you all.

** No Pringles were consumed in the writing of this post **

Cheers

David

I'd be honored to join if you and your team accepts me :-)

Name: mynextthirtyyears/Vincent

Story:  I'm thirty three years old. I like riding, running, however, I am not a good swimmer. I can only use my arms (which don't get you to far). I ran very competively in high school. I was training for the Detroit Marathon back in 2008 and I am still having problems trying to recover from achilles tendenitis issues in both feet. I have tried icing, massage, heat, rest, and prayer. This frustrates me sooooo much! I miss running a lot but have fallen in love with cycling.

Family status: married, 3 sons and praying for another in 2012

Current training:  Yesterday was day one of me being serious again. I am in nursing school (R.N.) and have been slammed with six classes a semester.

This year's races: None

2012 races: None planned at this time.

Weightloss: I would like to go from 206 to 185 pounds.

Why I will be a good mentoree: I am determined at meeting my goals and look forward to the motivation, friendship, and knowledge that you and the team can offer.

Hey everyone,

so, does anybody already got some plans on how they will train to reach their goals ?

Why did you choose those plan ?

And also, very important, if you're already committed to some races, why did you choose those ? Share your stories, I'll start

I got my plan setup with my coach. It's a little bit pricey but find that's working for me. We discuss about what would be my A race for 2012 (Lake Placid) and then, we build from there.

Why did I choose IMLP ? because I wanted to do an Ironman and I wanted something EPIC !!! So I had the chance to register online as soon as it was open and there I am

What about you ?

I choose the intermediate 20 week Oly plan here on BT.  It's a little over my head currently, but I made a schedule for myself to build my base to the point where I should be on track with the start of the plan.  I picked the plan to help me push myself over the winter and make sure I get in the pool since swimming is my weakest leg.

I would advise you to bike on Wednesday instead of running. You will have to build the mileage on the bike so, my advice would be to bike.

I am going to "tick over" the Christmas period. I have a 5k Charity Run lined up for St Stephen's Day which will be my first ever Run Race!!!

Yeah ! The first one is always a good experience Do not forget to enjoy it !

I have a mountain bike and am considering using this for my first Tri's, What do you guys think?

For the first tris, It's gonna be Ok. You're gonna be slower than the other racers, but if you know that already, then you will not be surprised !

It's also a good thing to see if you're hooled before spending some money in some kind of road bike or tri bike.

Just make sure the race director allow that. I would give him a call just in case.

I am running 5k in circa 30 mins and want to reduce this time and I also want to increase distance too. What do you suggest first on increasing pace and then upping the distance? I am guessing two different approaches will be required but will bow to your expertise.

YMMV !

What I would advise is to build your mileage first, then add the speed. Like building a house. Build the base (your base long run), then the wall (your capacity to increase your power, like doing some hills training), then the roof (the speed workout).

That's what I followed and even if you think you're wasting some time running slow at the beginning, it's working.

I am hoping that with the training and all this that I will definitely see the back of the 30lbs I want to lose!

I'm sure you will !

Cheers and that's sound like a good plan

Hi Vincent,

Welcome there!

I'm not a good swimmer neither but at least, you know where to focus (this is what I keep telling myself...)

What is your plan to loose the weight then ?

All,

I was just checking your training logs and I have to admit I am already very impressed by your logs!

It is very good to keep a trace of what you are doing, and also to share it with the community.

Just a couple of things to make it a little bit more friendly, do not hesitate to add the other people of this group in your friends, into the settings of BT.

And also, it always pleasant to receive some inspires so do not hesitate to send some, and reply.

On that, Have a good night, need to get some sleep

What about you ?

So I haven't really chose a training plan yet.  Just doing a lot of running to get my base.  I did use the couch to 5k when I started because I couldn't run more than 5 minutes straight when I first started.

As for the bike, I too am on the MTB for my first few races.  I did get the advice to put slick tires, and I got a fantastic deal on clipless pedals and shoes on Bonktown so i'm gonna throw those on.  Besides, I'll eventually need them anyway

Planning on joining the local YMCA the first of the year and getting some much needed swim lessons.  Right now my version of swimming is to not drown.

My "A" race this year is gonna be the South Shore Chicago Tri.  Its at the end of the season, so i can get at least 1 race in before hand and want to do as well as I can.  Pretty big event.  I also want to run the Chicago Marathon, hopefully in less than 4 hours.

Motivation to start "tri-ing" was just to be more healthy.  I've worked in a restaruant for the past 5 years and its fast food and it was really starting to make me very unhealthy and I didn't like the way i was feeling.

Well, thats about all I got for now, so good night everyone and happy training

What are everyone's workout plans for the holiday weekend?  Workout both days?  One day?  Relax both days and enjoy the season?

I am hoping to ride outside Saturday even though it will be chilly.  It will be a welcome break from the trainer!

I've been down wtih a cold all week, so hoping to catch up a bit this weekend.  I've had a nagging leg injury for the past month that seems all better now and I was going to resume running this week but then the cold struck   Hope to get in a short run today, swim tomorrow as the pool will be closed over the weekend, and easy trainer work on Saturday or Sunday.  I think it's going to be too wet over the weekend for an outdoor ride.  Gonna be busy playing with my son's presents on Sunday so wont push too hard!

Thank you very much for the feedback.

I will work hard to build my base run, is there a rule of thumb on increasing yardage? I have read no more than 10% increase?? 5k is the furthest I have run so far but feel I could increase this to 8k relatively quickly moving to 10k by February.

I am going to put some slicks on the bike and will see about this and also clips/pedals after the New Year maybe some bargains to be had!

Will check out with race director about the MTB, thanks.

Cheers much appreciated!

Gonna do some more running.  Gonna get a brick done today, but the weather is really sleety. so probably to the gym tonight.

As for the weekend, more of the same.  a couple runs in, and I asked santa (my wife) for a trainer for christmas so maybe i'll get to use that next week.  here's hoping

Christmas day is off training for me but I might throw a run as I had been pulled off for this week by some busy meetings...

Then, as usual between xmas and New Year, with a run on New Year's day to start the year

I would encourage you to read those 2 articles on BT. There are great and I think those will help you if you have any fears/questions.

Training:  So right now I'm maintaining a 60 minute max run with a 90 minute max bike to start my training at the end of January for my 5 month training to my 70.3.  Swimming is the easiest for me and am doing 60 minute to 90 minute swims.  I picked the free training plan because that's what I can afford right now and it works out perfect because by the time my half comes I would have graduated and ready to do and and then start training for my full.

I do have a question about that.  Should I start my training a week early to allow for injury or do it to the exact date.  Also, I'm pretty slow: 11 minute running mile, 10:30 at my fastest, 2:00 100 yards, and 16 mph at my best bike on flat road.  I don't feel training by time makes sense for me since I don't think I will get enough milage in.  I think the one place I need to work on most right now is my diet, maybe that's why my times have been slower recently.  Do you think I should start writing done my food intake to see if we can find a problem?

Being in this mentor group I think is going to be really good for.  Thanks

It is all new to me but what I can tell you is that I find that writing my daily food intake really focusses me on eating healthy and would recommend it.

Respect for the 70.3! There is one in September over here in Galway, Ireland which I would love to do but as this is all new to me I will probably stick to the Sprints. Although I did suggest doing the swim leg of it in a relay with a colleague from work - I will keep you posted.

As the guys posted to me earlier speed can be worked on later but build the strong foundation first. With that in mind I did 4.42 miles today and it took me 46.47 mins.

You are doing great keep up the good work!

I'm interested in signing up

Background:  i'm 33 year old married male. I was competitive swimmer in highschool and a few events over the years. I spent 9 years in the military got out in 06. From there I totally gave up on all trainning and focused on career.  I later picked up bodybuidling. becuase I was getting that office space spread(weight). in 2010 I picked up cycling very novice. and have been riding since.(not alot but riding). I have covered about 1400 miles in the last 2 years.  I have done some running. Then last year. I decided i wanted to try a triathlon. well i'm hooked. I had a pretty serious set back in my trainning(puncture femoral artery). but have since recovered 100%. last year I competed in 2 sprint triathlons. both right around the 1:25 to 1:30 mark. swimming is my srong point, cycling is medeocre and running is pretty poor.

My goal for 2012 is to be competive in a triathlon series that i'm entering. i have been building base runs since october. but january stepping up the training. my first race this year is in april. right now pending weather. I'm runnig about 15 miles a week. cycling about 60 miles. and not swimming. but that will change in january.

2011 Races: Chattahoochie  challenge sprint tri, and lake point resort tri.

so if you have room for me in this group. I would like to be a part.

I dont know if there is an easier way but this is how I did it:

Click settings on the top menu of your main page.

Click the Training Blog Customization tab on the right.

Click Friends tab.

Hit the ellipsis (...) button.

Typer a username to search for - I just cut and paste from the list Alex provided a couple of posts up.

Hit Go.

Select the Username from the Results window that appears.

Hit Done.

Click Update Friends button at bottom center.

Hope that helps!

Hi,

I was out for my first ever organised run race today (12/26/2011), a 5k charity run. Was mild but windy and I did a PB of 28:14! I wasn't sure what to expect and so I started near the back and ran it at my own pace and picked my way through. It was good to run with others as I have been training alone in my running & bike. It was a a great fun race and I thoroughly enjoyed!

I might do a brick Bike & Run tomorrow as I am thoroughly focused on dropping my weight and buliding a strong foundation for my first Triathlon in 2012!
