Shermbelle - 2012-07-12 10:10 AM Wow, just dawned on me, 6 months from today is race day!

I know!  Technically my training plan already started, but I'm not going to do anything formal until Aug 1st.

Also, I just saw on their FB page that they will not be requiring us to put on the wristbands, nor will they be auditing them.

Yeah read that too, so I am guessing if you do your best to grab one and secure it and nothing seems to odd (ie ride a 4hr bike split) that it should be business as usual out there. Gotta imagine there will be wrist bands littered around the course from flying out of bento boxes or falling out of jersey pockets.

Saw this posted somewhere else and had to take a look. Routed the course in a couple places and everything is showing elevation limits at -10 to 20 ft. Or less (closer to 0/sea level). Incredible. Can't seem to get a total, however, as they're all having trouble saving the elevation data. From guessing off the charts, it might break 100 ft.

Giving how flat it is this could be a very fast bike split.  After IM Augusta I'll have to change my route to be more flat.

Actually those out and backs may make it a great bike course. Just enough breaking up of the monetany to keep things fresh so your not going on flats for long periods of time.

Not sure why I can't stop looking at this one. Moth to a flame?

They have the wristbands due to some logistics issue with the timing mats. Could it have something to do with multiple laps on the out and back sections? Wonder if having more than one hit doesn't work for the timing company they use. And as has been stated, they're not planning to check them. I get the feeling that it's more for helping people remember what lap they are on the out & backs. The one you do 3 times, and the other twice. On an event that long, some are bound to miscount. And possibly in case something just doesn't make sense with a result.

The swim sounds interesting since it's wetsuit mandatory. That's because of man-of-war potential. They're going to sweep the course for them, and keep an eye out during. Wonder if any of the gels the super-distance swimmers use to ward off jellyfish would be helpful (and allowed) for the remaining areas?

If the gels are allowed, I'd be interested in trying them.

Anyone hear anything more on bike transport?  Had heard (maybe here) that it was going to be Tri Bike but wasn't definite yet.

Checking on the gels. Don't know about bike transport, but there is still time.

I'm curious about differences between swimming in freshwater vs saltwater. Is there much to know or anything that can be done without access? I've only been in saltwater once and that was ~17 years ago. Open water is fine, just has the potential to be bigger in the ocean.

The added buoyancy makes for faster going but you also need to be that much more careful about not swallowing. I've never had a problem but I know other folks get upset tummies or bloat..

Other than that, not much difference..

About what I thought then, thanks!

And gels are ok if anyone wants to use them (but not in place of the wetsuit). They don't think it's really necessary as they're not expecting a bunch of them (or any, really) and the wetsuit part is a precaution just in case. Nature happens sometimes. These guys have been very responsive to questions.

I got bored the other day and decided to create the maps of the full IM course on mapmyrun.com. The maps aren't perfect but the 3d overviews give a good feel for the course.

This still cracks me up. The entire run seems to fit within a 10ft range. The bike might go up to 12 ft or so. The entire ascending is almost up to 400 ft.

I was wondering where everyone is staying or where the cheapest/ best bang for your buck place is.  I really don't want to drop 200/night so I was hoping you guys could offer up some cheap places.  I am bringing my wife so it has to be ok otherwise I would go for the cheapest, seediest place I could find.

I was a bit surprised that the rates were so high.  Sadly my wife has been doing some research and $200 seems about average and that's not for a really nice place.  Given the prices we are seeing we will likely cut our time there short

When you mention seediest it brought back memories of my last trip to the Keys as a college student 30 years ago. When we checked ito the motel one of the guys  asked where to go for a "pick-up" The guy working the desk asked what he was looking for, male, female or other. Nobobody was brave enough to ask what other meant.

Ahh road trips, reminded me of a trip to Montreal to catch an Expos game, got in middle of the night and asked a guy at a gas station where to stay, his response was "do you want a knock on the door in the night?" We went to the hotel that he said didn't offer that service to only walk in to the lobby and wait behind two couples asking the guy working what the hourly rate was.

Okay, back to lodging. Seems $200 is about the going price from what I can see too.

Yep, $200 seems to be on the low side.  I think my buddy and I are looking to do one of the Hyatt resort condos, which will work out to about $200/night each.

The Days Inn down there is usally on the cheaper side. It is clean and not in a bad spot. We used it last Jan when we did Ragnar it worked fine for us. I got no complaints from anyone on the team.

Anyone else looked into bike transport? RaceDay Transport has limited info for now, but said they'll be putting in pricing for Regions 3A & 3B early next week. Be nice to have some numbers to work with.

It's good to know there's an option because I really hadn't figured out how I was going to get my rig to Key West. Bike + Bag from Atl = $275 w/discount. Beats trying to fly with the dadgum thing..
