The sooner we get the pendulum swinging all they way to the extreme of all that is vile, the sooner it will begin to swing back towards beauty and purity. This is surely a huge push in the vile direction. Usually an addict has to hit rock bottom before recovery can begin. I would like to think this proposed "programming" represents rock bottom, but I fear we're not even close yet. But I'm with you in theory. I imagine bottom being when we have a channel devoted to a guy hitting himself in the 'nads with a sledgehammer. 24 hours of nut-busting. And it gets middling to high ratings. All day long. "Didja see 'Hammertime' yesterday, Joe?" "Sure did Bob. Love that show. Wham, wham, wham! Hahaha" "Hahaha. Wham!" Some days I wish BT had a "like" button. Ummmm...... never mind |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Think about the child, she's getting all of this attention like a nice little beauty should. I think it's fine to load up your child with Mountain Dew and Red bull because it makes them win! Duh!. I think parents should be fat, and kids should be winners no matter what. Plus did you even notice the vocabulary on this child AWESOME! how can you pass up a girl with a sweet southern accent saying Honey boo boo child and give me a dolla' to make me holla'. I've only heard hookers and stripper say that..
Wait, What ? |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Here's what I don't get: the people in the production company and at TLC who are doing this. How can they get up every morning and look at themselves in the mirror knowing what it is they're going to be doing for work that day? If I was involved with that show, I couldn't live with myself. How do you take the power that they have to do something worthwhile and positive and then decide "Screw it, it's easier and there might be a few more bucks in it for me if I intentionally do this piece of crap. I want that to be my life's work. I want to intentionally make the world worse for my having been in it." |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I caught a "preview" clip of the show on TLC the other day and was nothing short of horrified as a parent, person, and American. TLC is getting more sensationalistic by the season...Usually I can't get enough of TLC, but this show will join the list of shows I'll skip. Don't get me started on the food sacrifices the family makes in order to spend big on pageant stuff, there won't be any to go to if they're in the hospital with food poisoning every week. ICK x 5000. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() A friend of ours had a Facebook status about this show. I had no idea and asked her what her status meant, after about 5 seconds of explaining to me I told to shut the F up and de-friended her for simply watching the show. Seriously I feel dumber just knowing this show exists. |

I guess I didn't get that. It read to me like while everyone seems to think the show is the end of the world, it's not that bad. And that the people in it are smarter than they are scripted to be, and are actually a fairly decent family, all things considered (IOW, not the greatest natural reality tv fodder). The reviewer isn't saying the show is a great show--more that it's not what people are making it out to be, and if anything it's kind of forced "horridness". |

Should a 6 year old me making references to being a stripper? If this is what passes for entertainment then yeah... we're getting close to the edge in terms of television. Edited by TriRSquared 2012-08-13 12:36 PM |

I'll reserve my own judgement on it, as I haven't seen more than clips, so can't really comment. i only read the washington post article, but definitely got the impression that society is in decline, as is evidenced by the popularity and consumer demand for extreme couponing, toddlers & tiaras, and honey boo boo, described in the WP article as "displaying latent racism" because of her...vocabulary. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() After reading both of the articles, I can't help but to agree that there is a definite leaning towards society's rapid decline---in the facets concerning normal or accepted behavior. On the other hand, I also read that this show is depicting a family, though crass as they may be, they tend to genuinely care for one another and they are trying to earn an honest living rather than depending on the government to support them. Honestly, that is 100% better than average compared to quite a few "reality" shows out there... Look at the Kardashians--constantly arguing/yelling/belittling one another, or at Kate Gosselin--an example of how not to talk to others (unless you want to sound like a rude, arrogant person). I think I could handle a little bathroom humor in return for removing the anger and entitlement. I am betting that Forbes is correct in saying that the majority of the speaking is scripted--but that is probably a regular occurrence in this genre of television. That, and editing is also very widely used--I wonder if the "stars" of the show are proud of their depiction, or just enjoying the paycheck they are receiving as a result of it? |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Where we as a society miss the boat regarding 'Reality TV' is that these shows in no way actually portray REALITY! Sure, these spectacles exist as was introduced to us in spades with Jerry Springer, but they are exceptions rather than the norm. Where we fail is in watching and then attempting to emulate the behaviours portrayed because they are on TV seen by millions. Real reality would not amount to big audiences tuning in to see the latest tom foolery. That said, I don't look down on those portrayed but pity them for being exploited so aggregiously by a money grubbing media. This kid is on a one way track to early onset diabetes in my opinion. |

I don't think an obnoxious kid should get on TV. It makes other kids follow her lead, and it makes it "cool" to be flat out obnoxious. I refuse to watch this show. And I'll watch some pretty bad TV. |
