The Middle was a great suggestion - there are tons of shows without "violence" (How I Met Your Mother, Happy Endings, The B in Apt 23, Parenthood, etc.) - but the themes are very "adult", which I'm assuming is the root of your question.

Whoever suggested America's Funniest Videos - really? That show is FULL of what I would categorize as violence. Unintentional, but it's still painful to watch. A heavy laugh-track does not make people getting smacked in the face/crotch, falling off trampolines or bikes, etc. "funny" to me. Same with Wipeout, but at least those people signed up for it.

I wouldn't characterize AFV as "violent" although from a purist perspective it fits the definition.   I understand that some people aren't entertained by it.  My wife is one of them.  My kids LOVE it.  My take is that while many of the incidents are indeed painful, nobody intentionally caused the pain, nobody died, and my kids get a look at why it might be stupid to jump off a roof onto a trampoline.  Plus, they *did* volunteer their recording to be on the show.  If they're fine with it...  so am I.

One of the kids' friends was actually on the show.  They thought that was just the coolest thing ever.   When we were in the states, it was on the TV every night at 7PM.   We could sit and watch for 20 minutes before bath time, and everyone would have fun, laugh, and be in a good mood for bath time.

My kid doesn't get the adult themes at all - what she gets is there's usually one less than clever person in the family - eg Raymond - who stuffs up and gets his just desserts at the end.  It's always very morally on the money and she loves it!

AFV - used to be good we're a bit over it now, how many whacks with the golf club and we see.  Plus I'm always put off by the baby's with green stuff coming out their nose or vomiting - seems to be on when we'ere eating too!

Big bang theory is about all I can think of that is pretty harmless as far as tv shows goes. with TV content gold rush could be good as mythbusters and other such shows.

My kids are ate up with "duck dynasty".........it's pretty funny.

I have met those guys.  The show is obviously staged to play on their "coon arse" craziness, but they are really good guys.

They don't even curse in real life, and they are all about family....maybe a bit too religious for me outside of their show......but make no mistake,  they'll kill and eat just about anything that flies or walks on 4 legs.

Their duck call business is an American success story.

He’s usually asleep by prime time. We’ve watched “Survivorman” and some cooking shows, Mythbusters, and some other Discovery Channel/Learning Channel-type stuff though. We watched some show about people hunting for giant catfish with your bare hands which he thought was hilarious. He usually prefers to watch movies if he’s not watching Phineas and Ferb.

Just curious if there are any shows on that that don't have tons of violence, inappropriate language etc that you can watch with your kids.

I remember growing up everyone piling around the TV to watch the Cosby show.  I don't watch much tv b/c I hate violence- so maybe I'm missing some- but is there anything we can watch as a family with a younger child?

Thanks!

LMAO We've started DVR'ng that show and watch it with our son. Full House two. Both funny  shows for kids from the 80's and we watch them often. Funniest Home Videos is good too.

we don't watch much TV as a family and we restrict much of what our kids can watch (11 and 13).  What they do like and DVR: Myth Busters, ICarly, Sponge Bob, Wipeout, and they enjoy many of the Food Network shows.  Something else they like to watch in small doses is Mad Money. Sometimes I think Cramer has too much caffine and they find him hillarious!

Once Upon A Time seems pretty family orientated.  Although there was one episode where some folks got turned into creepy puppets and that freaked my kids (girl 8, boy 11) out.

America's Got Talent (my kids love that show) and all the singing "reality" shows (X-Factor, The Voice etc.)

My kids also love Survivor.

I was wondering if people thought it was family friendly - it's quite imaginative but can be on the violent or adult side with quite a bit of suspense. I quite enjoy it but i am a grown up but i think it's probably for the older kids.  But I love the concept and I think it's very well done.

I agree with some of the previous suggestions - The Middle, Once Upon a Time, Mythbusters, those are all favorites of my kids. If you're in the states and have BBC America, my kids are absolute Doctor Who fanatics....

I will put in my vote for Once Upon a Time. The entire first season is on netflix. I'm not sure whether you mentioned how old the kids are. Step-daughter will be 12 next month...but she is pretty sensitive to excessive violence/gore, language and does NOT like watching kissing :-P  But we've all enjoyed Once Upon a Time. There are some violent and/or darker moments, but it goes along with being a fairy tale. It usually turns out well, but there may be some scarier moments until then.

When we had cable, we enjoyed Food Network shows: Cupcake Wars, Food Network Challenges (the big cakes, etc.). Mythbusters (I believe was mentioned) would also be a good show. Check out some of the reality shows for cooking or fashion or ?!!??

Good luck! I realized while watching with step-daughter that it is pretty sad how many shows in primetime (even the "early" slot) are not suitable at all!!

jgaither - 2012-12-17 9:12 PMKerikadi, Just curious, does the Disney thing have anything to do with serial mommy murder?

. I don't know what that is. I am ok with a little Disney but in general the girls are dressed inappropriately IMO, and are mindless boy chasers. It is very dumbed down. I like some of their specials or movies but most of their regular shows leave much to be desired.

I don't like the fact that the adults are portrayed as more immature than the children in most of these shows. I know it's all for fun and just a T.V. show but it gets on my nerves. We don't watch many Disney sitcoms either.

I'm happy my kids still like Dora and Dino Dan.

.02 cents, but my wife watches HGTV and DIY with our 5 year old and he enjoys some of the shows. Woke up one morning and asked her if a couple "loved it, or listed it?" I was completely lost as to what he was talking about, but my wife was in heaven because they got to talk about it. He also likes watching American Pickers, Salvage Dawgs, and loves American Digger. The guys on American Digger pulled a Confederate cannon out of a lake, and now everytime we drive past a pond or lake he asks if I think there is a cannon in it.

Not really family shows because they are geared for kids, but with 3 boys 5 and under we also have Sprout's the Goodnight Show on a lot. 10-15 minute shows like Thomas the Train and Caliou, that allow them to watch a lot of different things and we can always say, after this show it is bedtime.

Duck Dynasty, AFV, Storage Wars, Disney shows (some I can even watch).

Lately, I've been finding '80s movies On Demand which are fun to watch - Goonies, Gremlins, Goosebusters, Raiders of the Lost Ark, etc.

They've gotten better about it in recent years, but they have a history of moms either getting killed in the beginning or the story starting off with the mother dead and what mother's are present are evil.  It's like Walt hated his mom or something.  Very strange.

Snow White
Cinderella
Bambi
Beauty & the Beast
Little Mermaid
Sleeping Beauty
The Sword in the Stone
The Jungle Book
Aladdin
The Goofy Movie
Dumbo

and the list goes on.......

I was just curious.

We like watching Amazing Race together (just finished a series).

Our kids have gotten us into Dr. Who- probably best for slightly older kids, but a great show.  We watch on Netflix.  They rarely watch network TV, but have definitely enjoyed Mythbusters, and the History channel shows.

We don't watch with the kids but if you have chefs in the making Chopped is fun...
