KateTri1 - 2013-02-12 10:35 PM I share an office with two coaches. They make fun of triathlon. They both have beer bellies. What's up with that?

Triathlon is just fun to make fun of for "skill athletes".

I love triathlon so don't take this the wrong way, but the fact is, it takes WAY more practice to hit .300 in baseball or shoot 75% from the free-throw line than it ever does to be able to run a triathlon.  In fact, if it wasn't for swimming, virtually ANYBODY could spend a month or two and finish an event up to Oly distance....especially with all of the walking that goes on.

Again, I'm a fan of anyone who gets up off their arse and becomes active in triathlon or anything else......but I get why other athletes make fun of triathlon....and triathletes.

It takes nooo practice to shoot baskets with my son, or take a bat and play some ball, or be on a community team, I can do that. You are comparing professional players with amateur triathletes.

I do not really have the skill to podium in big triathlon event. It takes some genetics and umm. practice to do that.

The beauty of triathlon is that anyone who can swim, has a bike, and can run, can participate. True.

(I was kidding with my response, I love my coaches. They're really funny)

PS: As far as I know, my friends have done nothing to practice any of their skill sports since High School/College.

But they played for their high school or college teams....and they practiced more than we do in order to swim, bike, and run.....3 things I learned to do shortly after I learned to walk.

The other thing.....people who don't do triathlon get tired of seeing us referred to as "athletes"...and for all but a few of us, they're right....we just exercise alot.  The athletes among us are at a completely different level.

So people who run track, swim, or cycle  for a team are athletes but people who do Tri's are not is that what you mean?

No....you know what I mean.

When the running craze hit and it seemed like everyone became a "runner".....would you call all of them athletes?  I can still run a triathlon up to OLY distance on a days notice....but I'm no longer an athlete....I'm just an old guy who exercises alot. Other than that I'm a father, a grandfather, a husband, and alot of other things before I could ever get to "athlete".  I'd say 90% of the folks who do triathlon could use a good dose of "settle down".

I played sports all through school, which I guess made me an athlete then, but now I think I train more regularly for triathlons than I did for a football or basketball season, so I do consider myself an athlete. I also consider anyone that does some kind of athletic activity an athlete, although they may not be on the same level as professional athletes.

I've felt a bit of pissy negativity toward triathletes in your posts recently. I think you are having a triathlete midlife crisis..

No....if you work out, you MUST post it on FB, blog about it, and then log the mileage/time.

Doesn't count unless the above is done. However, if you talk about it in TT, you're automatically wrong and will be called names.
