Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() joannh13 - 2006-08-14 9:41 PM Waaaaaaaaaaahh.... I hurt my widdle knee. Seriously - have done everything I've ever read or heard about in terms of what NOT to do when running to get injured and it caught up with me. I've got that IBT syndrome thingy. Ouch. Hopefully a week of icing it and no running will do the trick. Happened yesterday and it was so painful I could barely walk but today I'm walking a lot better. Sigh.... Rub Tiger Balm on the tendon insertion points in your knee (or whereever there is pain) do it 3 x a day and then when you start running again, do it before and after. ALso do some core strengthening while you are not running. Planks, and 1 legged balances are great for quick stabilization building. This will help. Both of these really helped me with minor ITB pain. (make sure you buy the non staining type, the other is orange) i did IMLP in 2005 with ITB. I was fine until mile 13 on the run. And then it just hurt. I ended up walking miles, 19-20 &21. Then ran the rest. What hurt most was the running after walking. So I just kept running. Hope this helps! |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Thanks to everyone for the comments and advice (even Amiine, as I know you are just trying to be helpful). Knee is feeling a lot better today so hopefully I'll be running again in the next week or so. Sorry if I was snippy but injuries this close in to IM are a real beeyotch. Especially when brought on by my own stupidity in ignoring every bit of advice I've ever heard about run training! Hope you all are doing well with your plans so far. |

Extreme Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Glad to hear you're feeling better. I'm definitely sure Jorge was only trying to help... but I agree, I know I certainly get a bit defensive when I know that I was probably pushing too much in spite of contrary advice. (Hah, my hubby knows all about this--HAHA.) But it's just so damn tempting to "do a little bit more!" Gotta keep ourselves in check! ![]() |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I developed IT band problems while training for IMAZ this year. I understand how you are feeling. I had to adjust my running down quite a bit in the last month before the race and I was a wreck! I ended up getting a cortisone shot and I didn't feel it at all during the race. That is a short-term solution if it doesn't resolve itself. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Week 12 of the BT plan almost in the books. This was a swim focus week and it tired my out!!!!!! I could barely stay awake yesterday...all day! Today is an off day and after sleeping in until 7:45 this AM I feel so much better. Plan is going pretty well for me so far. The next couple weeks should be interesting with the run focus and then bike focus. I'm a little concerned about the big increase in run mileage, but it will feel good to get it under my belt. I can only imagine how tired I'm going to get as the hours continue to climb! I've got to get my diet in check to help fuel me instead of just fill me (with crap like burger king or Zaxby's). Hope everyone is progressing along nicely and the injuries stay away (or don't get too bad). Here's to no hurricanes wiping PCB off the map this Summer and no waves on 11/4, JG |

The Original ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() So far all is good with me. I have to hit the pool this evening for a 3,200 yard swim- yuck. I am pretty tired today due to not enough sleep so it should be interesting to see how my swim goes. I don't think I've ever swam that far in training yet. I have a 4 hour bike tomorrow. The next few weeks my swim my swim distance will be high volume and then next month my biking and running really pick up. So I think next month is when things will get REALLY crazy for me. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Janelle, I think you and I are on the same training plan and at exactly the same point in the plan. Yeah, next month the volume kicks up. Looking forward to that 18 hour week? And 6 hour bike rides? Overall, I think I'm right on track and feeling good. I'll be out on a 4 hour bike tomorrow. Going to try out a new nutrition plan for IM. Then I'm sticking a 30 minute run on the end of the bike; just because. TJ |

I am also adding a TR run after tomorrow's bike just because I need that practice. I'll be thinking about ya on my ride tomorrow! I hope yours goes well! So far I like this plan. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() WOOOOOOOOOOO HOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! New bike came in today! Going to pick it up after my run, swim, and weights. It's good motivation to get those workouts done quickly. Hopefully the knee will cooperate on a short run. We'll see, I guess. Hubby got me a P2C for my birfday last month. Hopefully it is worth the wait. Definitely making me look forward to biking.

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I have been training with some of my Ironman Canada Buddies so I have a very solid base under my belt already. So far I have completed 2 rides of about 5 hours. The distances were around 120 to 130 km, but in very tough windy conditions, and also with lots of hills. I also have 2 rides of about 4 hours around 90km to 100km. I have also done two runs of 2:30 and 2:40 hours. And I have done one open water swim of 4000m. As well, I did an olypic distance race a couple of weeks ago, and a 1/2 ironman distance training session in July. Again with the IMC crowd. I normally set out my routine and follow it religiously, but with my ironman training, I started a new job with a lot of evening shifts, which has made it hard to stick with the schedule. so I have been following the recomendations from Gordo Byrnes web site, and concentrating on hitting my key long workouts, and doing whatever I can fit in during the weekdays. For the next couple of weeks I plan to concentrate on race similations and bricks, and lots of rest, hopefully. I feel really good except for a screwed up week this past week where I had a couple of late nights and early mornings. I felt pretty tired and groggy, but I now have two weeks off, so I plan to visit my parents with my kids, and get in some good workouts, and lots of sleep. Can't wait to get to Panama City. Jim |

The Original ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Is anyone else mentlaly struggling with their IM training right now- or is it just me? It's mostly mental for me. Physically I've learned how to listen to my body and get more sleep which has helped. I can tell when I'm due for a rest day and will gladly take it early if needed. I did my first long swim workout today- 4,000 yards. Not bad- I just got bored. I tried to reassure myself that I won't be bored with the IM swim since I'll probably get kicked in the face a few times and have my butt grabbed as well. Those things just don't happen during training swims at the pool. Anyways, another week almost down. I'm trying to not look too far ahead with my training plans- things are really going to pick up soon! |

Those things just don't happen during training swims at the pool. That really depends on who you're swimming with. Before my last recovery week (I'm two weeks on, one week down) I think I was really starting to get into the overtraining mode and my motivation was low, as was my energy and mood, frankly. But now that the big training weeks are here, I'm resting better and pretty motivated. I just have to hold onto that for the next 10 weeks. Bring it on! |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'm pretty amped still. I have a big race on 9/10/06 that is about 3/4 of the IM distance. Its 2 miles of swimming, 19 miles of trail running and only 30 miles of biking. So I'm gearing up for that and really excited about it. I am sleeping well and eating right. The kicker of the race is you bike first, the finish is up a big 6 mile mountain climb. then you ditch your bike and alternate running and swimming. you have to carry everything with you! It's a very cool race! I did it last year injured and had to walk a good portion of the last run. this year I'm healthy and want to place in my age group. I set a PR last weekend in a 10K race. I ran a 56:00! I've never broken an hour. and then a couple of hours later I ran a 58:15! so 2 PR's in one day! The race was a 100K relay. 10 people ran a 10K. I ran one leg as training and one leg was my "official" relay leg. I will get my century rides after my race on 9/10. I think about 2 should do it. I have been riding 60-70 each weekend with one other ride in the 30 mile range and doing a spinnerval each week. This is the first time I've been logging my training and its cool to see the mprovement on paper. Helps with the anxiety of "am I ready?" Keep on keepin on! |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Motivation has had ups and downs. I am looking forward to recovery week and hoping my long ride goes good tomorrow. My bike has always been my strength and I have been down a little lately. Training in the heat can be frustrating too, hopefully it will be cool soon. I haven't raced since June and I really need to do one, just to fire me up. I am thinking about an Olympic in Mexico Beach FL on Sept 23. It has the gulf swim and its 30 miles from panama city so maybe I can do some extra riding on the bike course the day after. On the upside, I did 4500 in the pool today for my longest swim session ever. Long set was a straight 2500. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Definitely struggling a little here. Hit a wall this week (also got hammered with allergies). I want to make the most of my run focus this week because I know I need the work but then will work in an off day or two soon to try to get pumped back up. I think getting inside of 10 weeks will be a nice motivational kicker for me since my plan was 20 weeks and I'll be on the downhill side of it then. |

Extreme Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I thought I was doing okay, but I just got hit with a wave of extreme exhaustion....... it's happened yesterday and today in early afternoon... like so tired that I HAVE to take a nap... can't force through it. (Yesterday I had to close my office door, and put my head down on my desk for 15 minutes. Today, since I'm working from home for the afternoon, I just plunked down on the floor and was out for 30-45 minutes.) Sheesh. Now this always happens after I eat something. But I've been eating stuff all through training, and just today and yesterday have I had this EXTREME tiredness. I hope I make it through my mega ride tomorrow.... |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() It's interesting to read the last few posts. Seems like several of us are having motivation issues and feeling a bit run down. Same thing has been going on at our house this week. My knee is feeling better but really put me in a bad mental state. Hubby has been feeling tired and motivation is low. I told him it happens to everyone and we all need to remember the mental part of training seems to be harder than the physical part. But we've all come this far. We can make it 2 more months! I'm with Ken - looking forward to the cooler weather as the heat really is zapping us of energy and slows us down a lot during the bike and run sessions. The only thing it's good for is making me look forward to hopping in the pool |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Naps are our friends! Are you taking vitamins? Are we all taking vitamins? That is really important as we wear down. We are getting to the stage of having to give up things for sleep and training, and some work, but that really isn't an option for most of us. I take echinacea, acidophilus, 1000 mg vit c and a multi vitamin. I find as I ramp up the training these supplements are very important! Also for fatigue, make sure you are drinking enough water! When we get tired we tend to eat more. it's not a bad thing to take an easy day or a rest day here and there if you can't make it to the recovery week. I miss being able to read at night. Now when my head hits the pillow, I am OUT! |

Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Not sure what postings I was reading earlier, but in them folks were talking about getting very worn down at this point in their training, which is just where I am right now. Next week kicks in the two most intense IM specific training weeks. Less than 10 weeks till IM FLA. and I am so tired! Did my first 100 mile bike training session on Aug. 19, went water skiing after, ran long Sunday morning, my legs felt great. Monday swam 4,000, Tuesday hard bike and run. Wed. swam 3,000, Thurdsay was an hour of sprint drills, Friday off and this past Saturday was a 50 mile ride with a 6 mile run after....and I BONKED on the bike. The past weekend and week finally caught up with me. I just feel like I have no energy! Are any of the rest of you feeling more weary of late???? I have been doing the upper ends of all the weekend training sessions- if it says ride 300 to 360 minutes, then I will ride 360. Guess the good side of having a coach is having someone to gauge what is happening when these kinds of weary feelings hit during intense training. Well, nothing to do but get rest when we can, and get on with the long stuff. Hope the rest of you are doing well and not feeling worn down. Any suggestions for good vit. suppliments to be taking in now? I currently take Vit. B complex, Vit. C, multi Vitamin like Centrum or Geratol plus Glucosemine for my knees. And drinking lots of water. Endurance and recovery drinks on the long rides and runs. Becky A. |

The Original ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I think my problem is that when my training started out low in volume, I would train for the day on top of walking the dog, mowing the grass, running errands, etc. Now that I am starting to hit higher training volume I need to remember that my body is capable of training, but I need way more rest and even more if I want to be able to do all those other things on top of training. I think to be safe for now I'm not going to go out of my way to do those other things and make sure rest comes first. I took a 2 hour nap this past Saturday and was in bed early- by 9pm. I slept like a rock, and took a short nap Sunday early evening and was still able to fall asleep by 9:30pm. Looks like I need more sleep than I'm getting. I find that I'm more motivated when I get enough sleep. If I don't get enough sleep then I'm worthless. I was so tired today that I went home for my lunch (I only live about 10 mins from work) and I laid down for about 15-20 mins. I was about to fall asleep when my alarm went off. But if felt nice just to lay down and relax for once. We should all make sure to get plenty of sleep!!! |
![]() ![]() |
Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() You are so right about the sleep. Reading up on IM recommendations, training and ect- this time we are in now, all the information I have read says get PLENTY of sleep! Sometimes, as endurance athletes, we tend to think ourselves invincable- that we can keep on doing all the 'normal' day to day things and keep piling on these training hours without any side effect. But the body can only take so much, or at least the average body. Someone like Lance Armstrong, Peter Reid- they may be able to burn it at both ends more- but I believe that us 'average' triathletes simply cannont maintain that level for too long. If my workplace had a quiet room, I would probably spend half my lunches during the week in there napping! So, this is the time to try to let as much of the other things slide, or have someone else tend to until after our event Nov. 4. We've all worked so hard to this point- and we still have to be strong enough and healthy enough to make it to the starting line first. Rest well all, be safe in your training and we'll all be in PCB before we know it! Becky A |
