I don't think it is wrong to expect not to be attacked in the final chute, just like the final stage of the TdF, so the impeding is acceptable in my eyes.

"attacked"?

You mean, someone racing? In the finish chute of a race? That's not a reasonable expectation?

I'm thinking SFSC means attack, like make a move, to make an attack on the bike, make an attack on the run--full speed, not physically assault, though he has that bit about the impeding being OK...

Hmmm. Not know.

All I know is if someone tried to impede me in the chute, well, that would end up being show...bwahahaha.

Soemone made thepoint about the impeding just being a reflex while #1 was in race mode, and I could see that.

I thought it was going to be Danny Trevathan!

Jerk...

No you, Danny.  I wanted to punch him through the TV last night.

To give him the benefit of the doubt, I DOES look to me that it was a reaction to the panic/scare/realization.  I have lashed out when startled (self defense).  Not in a race, just when a buddy jumped out from behind a corner.

So it looks a little unintentional rather than deliberate impeding.  But intent or not, it could have been consider a violation.

I almost threw the remote at the TV last night when I saw that it was a fumble. Good to see Del Rio chewing his @$$ out on the sidelines.

I think you can see second place guy coming up, didn't he see him? Also, reading Iron War, Dave Scott said he never understands why people high five in the finishing shoot. Its a race, and the mission is to get to the finish line as fast as possible, even if the placing is determined. I think Dave Scott would have blown by that guy for the win.
As for not seeing the 2nd position guy, perhaps the finishing route snaked/arced so that one couldn't see more than 20 or 30 feet behind? Just guessing. My personal opinion on the premature high-fivers and hams is it comes down to ego. The best of the best typically know exactly where they stand in relation to personal bests, course records, etc. For them, it's almost a subconscious "yeah I won, and I could have won by even more if I wanted to, but this makes me look appreciative to fans...and when I'm asked about my time I can tell myself I chose to pull up at the end, and could have had a faster time if I wanted to..."

I think the appreciation for the fans is an important point. Triathlon spectating is not the most exciting experience, so the fans do appreciate the acknowledgement--even from AG'ers.

I've got no problem with acknowledging fans. As a fan, I'd be more impressed with a line of high-fives while finishing...dare I say? Fast!? Heck, As a MOPer I throw out thumbs-ups, smiles, a high five if a palm is offered...but to lolli-gag like that...I don't know, it reminds me of the hot dog on a football field who takes it 90 yards only to slow down before scoring. Yeah, they may point to the stands while doing their little celebration, but it's not classy in my opinion.

I try to look at the positive here. My hope is that #1 sent a message out that he learned his lesson and shouldn't have behaved like that.

I really liked the tortoise and the hare reference, and the "it's 70.3, not 70.29."
