Elite 3060 N Carolina | Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 Raleigh : Official Thread Originally posted by soccerpmw15 Got my wetsuit today (sleeveless); 68F water temp and 3 weeks to go. Looked at the extended forecast and daytime highs hover near 85-90 and nighttime lows in the 60's. Sure, water temps can move up 10F in that period of time, but I am hoping for recurring phenomenon this year...morning of race announcement...wetsuit legal. Army Corps of Engineers reporting 72 degrees today. I know that WTC will have to take their own official readings but I don't see how this is going to be wetsuit legal (with so much time still left before the race). |

Expert 1342 Apex, NC | Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 Raleigh : Official Thread I don't have a dog in the fight this year (not racing Raleigh), but I will be helping with T2 setup next Friday, so yay! Anyway, I have not been actively tracking water temps this year. However...I just plugged in the data for the last 180 days, and, we are running 1.7 degrees cooler than last year over the past 17 days. USACE has just recently begun reporting temps daily (including weekends), so we have a little more data to look at. Since May 1, this is the year/year delta (negative means cooler this year than last): 5/1/2015 -2 We're running above where we were in 2013, and below 2014. 5/31/14 USACE water temp was 79F. 6/1/13 USACE water temp was 76F. So, the answer is: purple.

16 | Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 Raleigh : Official Thread Still at 76 today. I assume this report is pretty early in the day since I just looked at 10:30 and today's report is already up. Starting to look like no wetsuit! Also, the high is looking like low to mid 90's for the 5 days leading up to the race. |

Elite 3060 N Carolina | Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 Raleigh : Official Thread I think this race is shaping up to be epic......and I'm mean that in a bad way. Swim: Most likely the first time this race will not be wetsuit legal. Bike: First year the bike was fast, last year slow because of the winds. I think this year the bike is going to be slow again but because of the new bike course. Run: First year the run was hot & hilly. last year not as bad. With 94 the predicted high at this point, I predict a slow, miserable run. In short: slow swim, slow bike, slow run. We'll see!!! |

Agree 100%. I'm going to find my way downtown as a spectator though. Folks are really going to need to hear some encouragement along Hillsborough in front of NCSU...That's where I could've used some last year (and 2013). |

Greenville, SC | Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 Raleigh : Official Thread Why do you feel the bike will be slower? I have done it the last 2 years and rode the new course a month ago....really couldn't tell that much difference....but then again, I do not ride that route regularly. Last year the high was 78, this year the forecast is 88....so a definite difference there. However, the wind was actually down in '14 vs '13 (6 mph vs 11 mph)....but it was out of the east in '14 and out of the SW in '13. Which direction is most beneficial on the bike? |

Elite 3060 N Carolina | Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 Raleigh : Official Thread As you mentioned, wind speed is not the biggest factor, it is wind direction. Comparing bike times only, there was about 10 minute difference for people I know (including me) who did the race in both '13 & '14. I feel like the bike route is going to be slower because: 1. there is now a 180 degree turn on the course and IIRC, that road (Seaforth) is pretty bad pavement. Whenever, you have bike traffic in both directions on the same road, you just have to be more cautious and that slows you down (maybe just slightly). Having the out & back that early in the bike, is a recipe for disaster ***in my opinion***. 2. The route, as a whole, has many more turns now. Long stretches on Pea Ridge Road, Old US 1, New Hill Hollleman & Avent Ferry are now replaced with twists & turns. Taken individually these are small changes, but put them together and it adds up. Enjoy the comraderie between athletes before the race. Leave the phone behind. |

This water temp thing is going to go right down to the wire I think. We're fluctuating right around where we were last year (but still a few degrees warmer than '13)

I keep my phone in my Bento box on training rides. Not sure that it's legal to race with them in WTC. "Cameras, phone cameras, and video cameras are prohibited unless permission is given by IRONMAN. If such permission is given by IRONMAN, it is the athlete’s responsibility to notify the Head Referee of such permission prior to the start of the Race. Athletes seen with an unauthorized camera, phone camera, or video camera will be disqualified." |

In addition to your quote, Section 5.01 (L) of the WTC/Ironman competitive rules specifically prohibits communication devices of any type, including cell phones. That's the reason mine was with me. I had it with me at race start, but wasn't about to put it in my swim clothes bag. That and to have in case of a wreck or other medical emergency on-course for me or others. It was inside my zipped-up bento box, not visible, and not used during the ride. Not worried about them digging through my bag to find it. |
