] Thanks, My official distance ended up being 4,110 yards (they pro-rate partial distances at the 1 hour mark). My goal was 4,200, stretch goal was 4,300. I felt short of breath after about 500 yards so breathing didn't feel optimum not sure why. I finally felt like breathing was good 3/4th the way into it but by that time I was feeling the fatigue. Had a had a pull buoy I think I would have made the 4,300 LOL! Just got to keep working on that body position, high elbow catch bla bla bla....

Very nice result (even without a PB).  Congrats on a nice hour of suffering!

And it's the bla bla bla that prolly makes one faster, but that I find most confusing!  Hence threads on PB use and such (just started one asking about rotation, for example).  I have no problem going hard, it's the going smart that I struggle with.

I love it, too.

I had shoulder surgery on 12/14/16. I'm going to try to swim for the first time since Nov......Monday (2/20). I plan to use fins, at first....then progress to the PB.....then see where that goes. Both of my races this year will be wetsuit legal.

If I knew every race I'd ever do would be wetsuit legal, I'd swim every session in core shorts..........period. I have never understood the argument against this.

To the OP......good luck. If you wanna talk shoulders, shoot me a PM. I'd like to know exactly how much discomfort you still had when you decided to get back in.....and how long you went, at first.

Thanks for all the responses - I'll use the pull buoy, but sparingly.

To answer the last question, I haven't gone past 1300M - this has nothing to do with the shoulder, but is a product of limited time (travel all week = 0 swim).  The shoulder came back quite quickly, but I also didn't push and just tried to reintroduce swimming in short spurts.  I didn't swim anything other than 50/100's so the shoulder (and me) had plenty of rest getting acclimated to the water again.

A pull buoy is an excellent tool to help any level of swimmer improve their technique and power. When used correctly and regularly, the buoy can build core strength and stroke consciousness.

Next time you reach for your pull buoy, think again. By creating dependency on a buoy, the athlete never learns how to correctly create a more efficient freestyle stroke through better body position.
