I liked "Into Thin Air" until I just finished reading "The Climb." If you plan to read both, definitely read ITA first.

BodyCheck - 2006-10-03 11:49 AM Oh, and anything by Carl Hiassen.

I second that. Also "North of Havana" by Randy Wayne White.

If you are looking for lots of clever laughs with a great story, Tim Dorsey is one of the best fiction writers out right now. I'd recommend the his first, "Florida Roadkill". After that one, you'll be hooked and want to read the rest of the series.

add my vote for any David Sedaris book.

If you like Sedaris, read Running With Scissors by Augusten Burroughs.

Also just finished 1776, enjoyed it.

I'm really enjoying the series by George R R Martin:

A Game of Thrones
A Clash of Kings
A Storm of Swords
A Feast for Crows

I'm not much of a fantasy genre reader, but I really like the way he pulls no punches.

I *LOVE* that series.

i really like Sedaris because it's like a mental vacation.. i work 14+ hours per day.. the job is high intensity.. and sometimes i just need to unwind and veg-out.. his books make me laugh.. they don't require a lot of deep thinking or analysis.. they bring a light hearted note to intense days..

Strangely enough, David Sedaris sells many fewer books in the Bible Belt than other parts of the country.

All four of Dan Brown's books were good...just waiting for another, and like you trying to find a new author to read.

Second the Dan Brown. All Four.
Richard Preston wrote "Hot Zone" "Cobra Event" and one other that escapes me. All are excellent books of the same series.
Clive Cussler writes great adventure novels that are really entertaining and there are a ton of them in the same series.
Kurt Vonnegut is usually pretty good, although a little weird.

An amazing read...nonficition...Eugene O'Kelly, Chasing Daylight.  The CEO of KPMG, a prominent Fortune 500 consultancy (companY), learning that he had terminal cancer and only several months to live.  The story is about how he approached his own mortality, budgeted his remaining time, and how he unwound his corporate, personal, and spiritual life.  Un-be-lievable.

"A Prayer for Owen Meany." A pretty funny book that somehow points out the flaws of religion and politics but doesn't seem to make a point of doing it. Don't confuse this with the movie that came out, didn't really follow the story at all.
Also if you want a quick read my favorite Dean Koontz book ever... "Odd Thomas"
Oh yea, I forgot... Band of Brothers. Great mini series on H.B.O., better book.

I just started reading this, but Freakonomics.  It's a great book looking at various systems of economics and how unrelated things effect them.  Kind of like a chaos theory for economics.

I was going to suggest that one...I'm reading it at the moment. But, I've only read the abortion and crime rate chapter.

Also, the Harry Potter series-it's not just for kids!

The Looniness of a Long Distance Runner by Russell Taylor

Book Description
Out-of-shape and hammered more often than not, Russell Taylor, nearing 40, begins training for the NYC marathon as something of a midlife crisis. His journey from the treadmill in London via Wales to the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway illuminates the meaning of the egalitarian race, the only sport where a weekend jogger can run with world-class champions. For everyone who has contemplated running a marathon or watched from the sidelines, this comical and inspiring account will change their understanding of the legendary race.

I will have to agree that George RR Martin is awesome. A little depressing at times, but an amazing writer.

A new book I finished and totally loved was

Woman Who Run by Shanti Sosienski

I love The Eight by Katherine Neville. I've read it loads of times, it's brilliant. Also, for a very funny, gorgeous story, try Bridge of Birds by Barry Hughart. It's a story of a "hero with a fundamental flaw in his character, in an ancient China that never quite was." It's incredibly funny.

Also, I'd like to second, or third, or whatever we're up to, the Life of Pi. I didn't see it coming.

Enjoy.

...and I've read my two triathlon training manuals cover to cover several times recently...

Only 2!?  Surely more triathlon manuals are the obvious answer.  IMO one can never have enough triathlon manuals.

Paul Kimmage's description of being a drug-using domestique was interesting, I think its called Rough Ride.  And there's a relatively recent fell-running book called Feet in the Clouds (which made me regret my plantar fasciitis even more than usual).  Fiction: Jeffrey Eugenides or David Mitchell.
