Not to continue to hijack (okay, I'm continuing the hijack), but are the obesity issues of our society really Wal Mart's fault? I think the blame rests solely on the parents who choose to live an unhealthy lifestyle. Just because Walmart puts it on their shelves doesn't maen people are forced to buy it. If the market is there, can you really fault Wal Mart?

Also, why the slam on people buying a 24-pack of toilet paper on sale? I'm not sure what's wrong with that.

my bad. i'm sorry. and as I said earlier i'm not sitting on a pedestal. I'm the queen of 24 roll tp and bargains galore. i got into a groove with the post and sometimes my writing is me, as I often tell people, 'embellishing for the effect of the story'

Completely agree with your assessment of wal-mart as well. supply and demand. we ask for it, they give it to us. my rant was more about your point exactly, people making bad choices and then turning around to blame some corporate entity.

tupuppy - 2007-01-22 12:37 PM NOTE TO SELF:  Talk with wife NOW about setting the rules for NOT playing the “I can top what that parent did” game when it comes to birthdays, gift bags for the other kids don’t happen, and cake, ice cream and fun are enough.

Haha! Good luck with that. BTW, I'm not laughing 'cause your post was funny. More because I think you're delusional if you think you can escape the gift-bag hell.

A couple of months ago we had our daughter's 2nd birthday and my wife went to town at the local Party Supply store making up 20 gift bags full of stuff. I swear, just the bags alone must have cost us close to $150. Damn!!!

Well then, let me live in my delusional world until it implodes on me.

I take comfort in that my wife was raised (and maintains) with the "it's not the tag on your clothes that make your friends your friends" attitude and doesn't shop for labels.

I take reservation in that being a woman she reserves the right to change that perogative at will.

IF birthday gift bags happen I will let her know I will take no part in that.  And if that means sleeping on the couch, FINE, it's like camping anyway.

my neice sent us on the plane with a gift bag - she made sure I had stickers AND a stensil, as well as paper and pencil so I could make a craft.

That's my girl!! taking care of Aunt Booty.

I admit, I do gift bags but I put decent things in it... this time it was a tablet of tic-tac-toe or hang man, stencil and princess stickers... something the kids can use and learn from not just break and throw away - average price $2per bag.

I do not though, give in to the one-up-manship of kids parties. We hold the party in our house: this year for Alyssa's 7th b-day it was: 2 arts and crafts activities, light lunch, hot potato game, pinata, cake (a from scratch hand made character cake) and ice cream and the kids out out the door after 2 hours. No other little friend has ever had: 1) a party at home or 2) a from scratch character cake.

And I do say my kids think their party Rocks! everyone has a great time.

Good article.

In the end I believe it's about the parents trying to impress the other parents with houw much they can charge on the credit card.

Next time you run short of hot moms, give me a call.  I can substitute on a rental basis.  By the hour, day or week.  Reasonable rates.

No gift bag required.

Oh... and I will go on record here.  I eat at Cici's.  But the Golden Trough is an entirely different matter.  Really.

Peace.

DANG DANG DANG DANG DANG!!!!

I mentioned this to my wife last night and said that for birthdays I'm opting out of giving the gift bags as cake, ice cream, and fun should be enough.

She kindly reminds me that gift bags were given at our son's FIRST birthday (he just turned 2...and no gift bags...as we didn't have all the fuss of having friends over).  DANGIT!!!!

I mentioned that I didn't remember and that and she reminded me of the cheap-o sippy cups.  Oh yeah, know I remember.

I take comfort in that the reason for forgetting was because I wasn't involved in putting those together (or the fact that as a guy, that's crap that unimportant enough to forget).

DANG!!!!!!!!!!!   My delusional world already imploded.
