Keith, I forgot to mention, this is a GREAT course.  It has a few big uphills but it also has a few big downhills, it has flats, it has cornering, it has scenery, it has technical parts.  This place has got everything.  Not as hard as Buffalo Springs but much harder than Prairieman.

Thanks, that's what I REALLY wanted to hear
Don't worry, we're out there all the time, figuring out where we need to put extra volunteers/directional, etc....Got a meeting with Travis County Sheriff's Dept on Thur, to drive the course again with them, and make sure we've got everything set.

I do know there are a couple of blind corners on the bike course, and plan to put flaggers before those, to alert everyone, in addition to signage. I'm also asking if I can cone around the corners, to keep everyone from swinging wide into the other lane when going around them.

The good news is traffic is VERY light for the most part. On 290 and 3177, as mentioned earlier, it'll be a coned/closed lane and shoulder for everyone, and TX DOT is going to sweep the shoulder for you. Meeting with TX DOT on Fri, to make sure that's all in place as well....

Because of the 1 loop nature of the course, it's logistically difficult to control. We need about 75 flaggers, by my estimation. I try not to ever put just one flagger alone, so double up so people can keep each other company.

That said, we're still really looking for volunteers. If anyone has a family member or friend who'd like to help out, it'd be greatly appreciated. I want to make sure the bike course is blanketed....Let me know Also, if you know of any groups looking to raise money, we offer donations for groups of volunteers.....

I just mapped out the Sprint and Oly course on BT's route tracker.  The Oly has 1550ft of climbing over the 24 miles.  Heres the link for the Sprint course.  the Oly course is just 2 laps of this.

After riding most of the course (sans 290) today and yesterday, I think it's going to be one awesome race.  There are some formidable hills, for sure, but overall, it has potential to be incredibly fast depending on some uncontrollable variables (wind and temps).   It's a great course, and I can't wait to race it!!

Thanks mkmbharris for the great description. I had heard there were some big downhills that lead into sharp turns and right back uphill, so it's good to know where to expect them. Hopefully I'll get out there this weekend or next to see the course for myself.

My friend who rode the course sent me the following inspire when I asked about the hills. After reading this and the other eye witness reports I'm tempted to take my roadie instead of my tri bike.

This is a good report if you ride around DFW.

I'm going to qualify this by saying first and foremost... IN MY OPINION the hills will definitely be an obstacle for any Dallas-ite or flat-lander. They're by no means impossible. I would compare them to the Cedar Hill rally route (mostly rollers), but not quite as much climbing overall and not as much open flats without wind protection.

Most of the hills on the Longhorn route are preceeded by some sort of downhill or fast straight that allows you to build up some momentum if you work it right.

As far as comparing it to the Loving hills, you won't see any on the race course that are quite as short and intense as the first hill of the Loving trio, but the second two of Loving are fairly good representations of the course. Keep in mind that neither of the last two Loving hills have any true downhill that would allow you to really carry any momentum up the hills, but the grade and length is probably a decent local comparison.

If you only remember one thing as far as the hills, remember this: beware of mile 54.5-55 (ironically, the home stretch). I know that there's a thread with a mile-by-mile review of the course that said the hill at mile 55 is only the "2nd hardest" but I'm confident that it's going to take people by surprise and really punish people since it's on the home stretch.

I agree and want to qualify my statement of the 2nd and 3rd hardest hills.  They both come at the very end of the 56 mile loop and are not to be taken lightly.  This is a rolling course and the last two hills are going to be tough, just like the last hill at Buffalo Springs.  These two hills are on the Couples Tri and Austin Danskin route and are hard even at the end of a Sprint Tri.   Pace yourself so you don't blow-up on the run.  I haven't looked at the run course, but hopefully Keith won't have us go up that hill at the top of the damn

Yea... what about the run course. Here we are all worried about the hills for the bike... but running 13 miles of hills will be a killer too.

I've been doing hill work on my runs... but in the end, I'm going to be doing a walk/run combo no matter what the terrian.

So... anyone have a report on the RUN COURSE?

No idea on the run course, but am finally starting to get a little nervous with a month to go. I've done those last two hills on the bike course in Danskin three years in a row and they are tough at the end of a 12 mile ride. I can't imagine what they'll be like after 50+ miles on the bike. I'm usually MOP, but I'm thinking I may be BOP for this one. It's my first HIM, so as long as I finish I guess I'll be happy.

Wow, I wish I could volunteer out there...but alas, I cannot...it's a little far to commute and Uncle Sam said no...that being said, I've been reading all of this and can't wait to read EVERYONE's race reports and reviews afterwards as I intend for this one to be my capstone at the end of next year.  Good luck to everyone as you train this next month....looks like I should start planning now to find some good hills around my area when I make it back home.  Tear it up y'all. (early I know, but I'll say it now just to make sure!)

Run course map is posted...You get to run DOWN that hill at the dam, but you do have to run up the other side...That said, that's really the only major hill on the run course. It's mostly slight rollers/flat....

Just got back from going over the course with the Police. They've got a great handle on it...Gonna be great!!!!!!!

A buddy of mine has done shorter tris at the same venue and thinks that it'll be an interesting run along mostly grassy/non-paved surfaces at the end.  From what I could tell when riding the bike route and looking at the course map, it's mowed grass toward the end, and may be worthy of wearing a higher-ankle sock (in my opinion).  By the time you hit the run (unless you're blazing fast), it will likely be free of dew, but I imagine aid stations may have the potential of getting a little messy?  Just a guess not knowing exactly where the stations will be.  If I'm reading the map right, it looks like we go by the dam and have to run beside that last bike uphill... something tells me that will not be highlight of my day.

Only a little over a month out!  Who's ready for taper? Smile

About 4 of the 13.1 miles are on the grass/dirt roads...About half that is grass, the other half is packed dirt. The park actually goes out and mows it right before the race, so it's short.

There will only be one aid station on the grass/trail area. the rest will be on the asphalt, and outside the park.....

I'll look for ya at the BOP! I'll be there too!

At my last tri I ran on grass. It was... interesting. They had mowed before the race, but left huge piles of clippings.

Oh well, what does it matter... I'm sure I'll be walking most of the run anyways.

It will be interesting. At least for me, I've done Danskin the past three years at the same site and that run is all on grass. I prefer road to trail, but will do what it takes to get it done. Just have to watch the footing a little more in the grass and on trails.

Stopit, stopit, stopit!!  All this reminder of the hills is driving me crazy, since I can still only ride indoors on the trainer.

I've done that hill on the run for an Olympic where we had a two loop course.  You have to be a little careful going downhill, as it's still grass and you don't want to slip.  (Or maybe you do... you can rest your legs as you roll the rest of the way.    I found the uphill to be pretty brutal, as it will be right at the end of the loop.  Fortunately, we'll only have to do it once and, since it's at the end of the loop, you can spend what's left in the tank getting up it.

Sounds great!  I'm excited to run on something other than pavement - it will certainly break the monotony.  Although the hills will certainly be a challenge, I have absolutely no doubts that the race will be awesome.  I did Lonestar earlier this year and LOVED it (along with I believe everyone else - even despite the rain!), so I can't wait for this one!!

Ok- Thanks for terrifying the Chicago girl.  Now I will be sure to do the 45 minute Spinervals "The UpHill Grind" every morning for the next 3 weeks!

Just let me know where the photographers will be on the course so I can smile through the pain!

Very minor change to the bike course....Out in Elgin, instead of taking Youngs Prairie from Upper Elgin to 1704, we're going to take Monkey Road to 1704.

It's safer, as there are no blind corners. The Sheriff's Dept and I both think it's safer, so we're gonna go with it....I sat out there for a while, and locals cut those corners, as there's really never any traffic. BUT, on race day, there might be a few bikes out there...Just trying to keep everyone safe....
