Hey all...

I was at work all day but I think I've caught up with most of the going's on in the group.. here's a bit more info on myself for everyone!

I live in Northern Alberta, at about 57 degrees North, so it's been full on winter for a while here. It's warmed about to about minus 15 this week (that's 5F) but the last few weeks it's been about minus 30(minus 22F). We've already got about 3 ft of snow on the ground so needless to say my outdoor training is next to none. I have a pool membership, a bike and a Fluid CycleOps trainer, and a small gym with treadmill at work!! It sucks, but I think I'll be able to get by! It's dark from 3:50PM to 9AM anyways so it doesn't leave much time for outdoor activity.

I work in Air Traffic control here so I find the Tri training a nice way to relax and something great to focus on, especially in the winter! I have a 1500LB child (read: a huge horse...) that occupies most of my time as well, I have competition experience on her, and some 5k races under my belt, but no Tri's yet!!

Like I said, I'd like to run a couple Sprints, maybe an olympic and hopefully a half marathon or two. Again this is something I need a bit of help with, I don't know how much I should expect to be able to do in my first season! I'd also like to loose another 10lbs along the way :-)

On the way to the pool now... Sounds like a good group!

I live in Michigan but definatley not a Wolverine, Spartan or any other Big Ten Fan.( North Carolina Baby, Go Heels!!)

Sounds like we may have a new joiner, I just sent back a PM.

And stop with the rubbing it in of running in shorts and a tshirt. Tomorrows high is 23 and we aren't even to winter yet.

Uh oh, the only other conference we follow is ACC, and we are definitely Blue Devil fans, just check out my hubby's avatar (tomp).  I've been to a Heel/Devil game at Cameron, and it was just out of this world.  On par with the UMich/Ohio State game at the Big House, both just really intense.

We got about a half a foot of snow today.  It's pretty and fun.  Snowballs tomorrow

Back when I was working in the oilfield, I knew a lot of people from Northern Alberta. Strangly, they always seemed to be trying to go south

Hey Michael, I'm here. Thanks for letting me join in.

Andy. From Arkansas. Sounds like I may be the old one in the bunch. Turned 43 in October. Married 16.5 years. Two boys 15, 12. I have signed up for IMAZ Nov 08. I told my wife that it was either signup for an ironman or I was going to hit the midlife crisis with a really fast car. So, here I am. Look forward to keeping up.

Until last year we had family in Raleigh/Durham area so I have one child rooting for Duke and one for NC. Of course, I am in SEC territory so mostly what I hear about is football, but I can talk sports with anyone. Thanks

You're only two years older than I am. It will be nice to have another old guy to train with for the next year or so.

My brother lives in Cary, and he loves it.

bhoover10001 >> Yeah.. I'd love to go south! But I love my job so the place isn't too bad. I'm living in a Northern AB oilfield BOOM town.. so I know all about the people who live here... but don't reeeallly want to be here.

As for a training plan, I'd been a little all over the place doing my own thing to just get a feel for it, and because I was doing a lot of traveling. My travels are done now though and I'm all set up to start on the 20 week Olympic plan. I have plenty of time to train, and no real excuses. My one problem is that I am always worried about pushing myself too hard... I really want to avoid getting injured! I can run comfortably for 50 minutes (not fast... 9 1/2 to 10 min mile..), biking is a bit new to me, but I just got a new bike and trainer and I'm all set to get into it!, and the swimming I and working the most on, trying to build it up. Couple months ago I couldn't even swim 25 M without gasping for air, but I'm getting the hang of it and swim Between 1250 to 1750 per swim right now.. Loving all of it!

Sounds like you have a descent base to start with. A 20 weeks Olympic plan would be great for you. I understand the injury hesitation as I tend to have the same issues at times. I have had plenty of running injuries (usually out of my own stupidity) so can feel your anxiety.

What's up group? Any workouts on tap today?

I got in a 34-plus minute run in 22 degree weather, followed by a short strength session. Gotta love the midwest!

Any baseball fans in the group? Thoughts on the Mitchell report? Have a good weekend.

I bailed on a run today, but I don't feel too bad about not doing anything today because I've worked out every day this week so far . Plus, it looks like it will storm on Sunday again, so I'll have to move my long run to tomorrow instead, so it's better that I relaxed today.

Probably the most exciting thing that happened today is that I signed up for an organized bike ride! The Ride to Montauk, across Long Island. I am signed up for 66 miles, but I can change my mind to the 100 up to race day. Husband's parents have signed up for 100 miles (they have NOOOOOO idea), but if they do it, I will absolutely do 100 too - no way are they going to bike more than me that day! But I've never biked more than 40 miles, so I'll have a lot of biking to do to get ready. But it's supposed to be flat as a pancake, so it should be fine, I just have to get used to be in the saddle that long.

Have any of you ridden a century before?  Did you have to do much prep?  I'm really no bike rider...I've probably only ridden 500 miles to date since I got my bike.  *sheepish*

I ran 3 miles today sunny and 40 degrees, wheather is supposed to go down the toilet in the morning.

I am convinced that every profile sport drugs are involved cycling seems like the worst with the blood doping. Even golfer's have been suspect.

Yes I've done plenty of centuries, you really need to build up your base miles, a good bike fit makes all the difference, nutrition is also very important bonking at mile 70 is not pretty. Make sure you have some 60 to 80 mile rides in before you attempt, it will make for a funner century to first get the miles in.

Had a nice little 6 miler today and then some weights

Baseball Fan? Well I have traveled to I think 33 different major league parks (lots of teams now play in new parks thus more parks than teams) and probaly have seen a few hundred games, I guess you could call me a fan Undecided Actually a huge Dodgers fan.

I am glued to the coverage of it and can't wait to see what more comes from it. But I also think that it goes on in every sport across the board. It is just like any other segment of life. Everyone strives to be number 1 and many are willing to cheat to get there or stay there.

I did I think 6 rides of 100 or more maxing at 122 in prep for Redman Iron this summer. I always train alone but I think it took me 4 tries to actually get to 100. I would always either be short on time or break it off early for one excuse or another.

Let us know and we can help get you ready as like you said "No way are his parents outriding you" Surprised

Lisa: Even if you didn't have your own motivation, I cannot imagine that we would let your inlaws out ride you.

Nole: I have not had a chance to read the report yet. I have seen some columnists like Thomas Boswell in Washington Post who seem to have very well articulated the case. I will be interested to see what the fallout is, if any. I will also be interested in watching your progress in triathlons. I played baseball in college (well I was on the team) and wish I had started transitioning a lot sooner than I did.

Didn't do anythng today or this week for that matter. Stressfull week but hopefully will get in a good run tomorrow.

Tim/Mike- I think you are right on with your advice about bike prep for Lisa. Lisa, the key is going to be your base, and the best way to get ready is to gradually build your endurance by increasing your mileage.

I think increasing cycling endurance is something I'm struggling with as well. With my 'A' race being in August, I"m wondering how many longer rides I should do prior to the event. I plan to be in a position in early March where my long ride would be 30-35 miles, and am I trying to figure out what I should be doing the last 2 months of my training. The book I'm reading (Going Long) continually reiterates that having a solid ride is one of the biggest keys to long-distance because it helps keep enough in the tank for the run. With that being said, 5-6 rides in the 50-60 mile range? I'm sure there's not an exact answer, but curious for everyone's input.

Edit- Forgot to mention that at the end of this fall I put in a few rides in the mid 40 mile range.

When is the ride? Do you have plenty of time to get ready for it?

I do have plenty of time, i'ts not until June...so, if I am consistent with riding, I'm sure I'll get to 100 miles!   I'll spend some time this winter on the trainer and then when warmer weather hits I'll try to build from 20 miles at a time to 30, 40, and so on.  The thought of just going for a 60 mile ride on a Saturday boggles my mind, but then, so did a lot of things I'm planning to do next year .

I hit a 7 miler today, the longest I've run in a really long time...and I feel fantastic.  It was slow but I never felt tired, I stayed in Z2 for most of it, and I felt like I could keep going when I finished.  I even felt STRONGER the 2nd loop than I did the first loop and came in 5 seconds faster.  WOOHOO!
