jenna1870 - 2010-01-18 2:09 PM Had a great workout today at the gym (other than running into my boss, but that wasn't THAT bad). And although I know the calorie counters on machines are notoriously faulty, I can't help enjoy the fact that the Nordic Track treadmill had to "roll over" on the calories, when I pushed the inclines on my 60 minute walk and it went past 1000 and can only display 3 digits. FINALLY got up a good healthy sweat and pushed hard.

I definitely work harder at the gym than at home, I may have to suck up the cost and join.

Way to go - that must have been a great workout to get the calorie diaplay to "roll over"!

You guys know that "thing" that's supposed to happen to newbie swimmers when all of a sudden, something 'clicks'?  I think it happened!  I made a really concerted effort to stay slow and calm and stayed in the pool for an hour...swimming the entire time...I've finally gotten to the point where I can start practicing my flip turns because I have a reason to do them!  Yay!

Hey everyone.  I finally landed back on the face of the Earth.  I had a great short run this morning.  I got my treadmill running a little better today and was able to go a little.  Felt really good.  I think it is a temporary fix but we will see.  I would love to get a new one but am having trouble letting go of all that money for a new one.

I'm having a great week now that it's Friday!  Hope the day off wasn't too painful Chris...

Looking forward to a 'relatively' warm weekend; so maybe I'll get to run outside a bit.

Hi all,

I got out for a ride last weekend and again today. It feels harder than it should! I don't remember this happening last winter. :(

No, riding was still good. I think it's because with the way the weather has been this like only my 3rd outdoor ride since November. I guess all those miles and sessions on the trainer and rollers are only a poor substitute for real road riding.

The weather this year has been a lot more uncooperative for riding outside than last year.  I'm sure that's what it is - I know I always have an adjustment period.  You'll get it back.

Looks like everyone has been having a great month of training so far this Jan! Awesome! Way to go everyone!  I had a wee bit of slump - but I think I'm over it now and ready it kick it back into high gear, so I've been trying to get a new plan together to try and get more running time in and a bit more swimming.

I've been trying to join our masters team - but it's been closed for registrations for ever because it's soooo full - but a few times have opened up - so I sent a message this morning to see if I could get in... fingers crossed!

Now, I am trying to figure out were/when to fit in some running!  I've been "sneaking" in some time on the treadmill at the gym I go to before or after my workouts with the trainers - but that's not really aloud there as it is a "trainer - only" facility  and you can't really do your own thing.... so... I have to run somewhere else.     And unlike you "southerners" - who are fortunate to just go outside - I am looking at 3 feet snow drifts that are covering a layer of ice - and that usually hangs around until March.... so.... um.... I'm stuck running/biking indoors... I'm kinda a wimp that way!

So here is a question for you runners.... if you were stuck running inside, would you run on a treadmill or on a track? Would it make difference if you had back issues?  And would it make a difference if you were a beginner runner, who can run about 20 - 25 min on the treadmill without a problem - but fairly slow.   I do want to increase both my endurance and pace.  My first goal is a 5k run (part of a splash n sprint race) on March 06.
Thanks!

Good luck with getting into the Master's Team Kathy!  I think if I had back issues, I'd rather run on a treadmill...but you may want to check with the gym and see how cushioned the tract is...if it's fairly new, it may be a good track and easier on your back and joints.  I don't know that either one is any less boring than the other though!

I just signed up for a week long bike tour of the Erie Canal from Buffalo back to Albany, NY.  They average about 50 miles/day and camp out at night.  It sounds like a lot of fun and plenty interesting.  Very excited!

I would probably run on a treadmill.  I get kind of dizzy when I run on a track.  Treadmills are pretty good at shock absorption, so it shouldn't hurt your back that much.

I just noticed this Kim.  This sounds so cool.  That would be awesome riding along the canal all day seeing all the boats go by.  What an adventure!!!

So I need some advice. Today I did my run/walk of 9min run, 21 min walk. I have had a stress fracture in the past and today while I was running, I could feel a twinge in that leg. Anyone have any advice? I'd really like to keep training, but am really scared of breaking it again.

So, I've also had a stress fracture in my tibia that took a long time to heal.  It did twinge (and still does occasionally) when I run on it.  But, it doesn't last and doesn't feel like it did when it was fractured.  If it feels like that at all, check it checked out right away and stop running.  The sooner you catch it, the faster it will heal.

Are you running outside or on the treadmill?  You could try a couple of treadmill runs to see how it does since it is lower impact.
