ON SWIMMING

If you haven't skimmed, read, perused, ruminated, memorized, and done everything in this little guide ... you're missing out on the BEST SWIMMING INFO/TIPS ever.

I *still* use these little points to plan and do my swim coaching clinics.

Subject: RE: MAD MANATEE Mentor Group (TriAya & lmscozz)--CLOSED!

Saw the movie Hood to Coast on Tuesday night.  It was good.  That race is on my bucket list.  I am hoping that the movie inspired some of my buddies to go out there with me.  Its a lottery entrance so there is only a slim chance we would get in if we registered and I'm sure slimmer now that the movie has shown.

Swimming, such an interesting topic. Thank you for the link.  I need help with my arms, I don't use them.  I have freaky strong legs. I am faster with a kickboard than I am when I use my arms. I do not "catch" the water or propel myself with my arms.  I am hoping that my friend will do some private lessons with me.  He is the coach of the master group I used to swim with but I don't want to be part of that this time.  I want to follow my HIM plan and the master group does not coincide with my training.  I don't want to try to re-think and re-work the plan.  I am going easy and thoughtless this time and trusting the plan.  Trusting a plan is difficult but that is my goal. I figure the people who write the plans know a lot more than me.  Who am I to re-write and then burn myself out?

Airshooter - 2011-01-12 4:14 AM Hi everyone, I am catching up here after a little winter break. Needed the vacation!

I had my first swim lesson today and the instructor kicked my butt. I almost thought half way through the lesson that this whole swimming thing may be more than I can handle. Is it just the beginner working to hard? I hope it does get easier. Any advice is appreciated.
have a great day!

CONGRATULATIONS! That's a milestone.

Being a beginner at anything, particularly any physical + coordination pursuit, IS very hard. And you didn't quit.

My advice is keep doing what you're doing. persevering. It WILL click for you, and it does take time. Nobody except Mozart ever learned to play piano well in one lesson either.

When I was getting concentrated instruction, I used to smack the water in frustration at least 2x an hour.  And scream.  Stick with it.  It gets better.

If you'd done that with your feet ... that should have been plenty of propulsion to keep going, no?

Manatees ... Mike and I have a friendly fisticuffs ... ah, feet-i-cuffs ... going on about who's got the bigger feet ...

I will say that a visiting BTer who is a girl with size 11 and very wide hind paws looked at my feet and said, WOW ... that's your foot?!

Gee, thanks.

but ... but ... think of the FLIPPERAGE! It's like swimming with built-in fins!

Seriously, though, no-one ever blew their legs out on the swim (unless they were doing breaststroke. In which case they should have gotten out and gotten a room anyway).

Actually, there was a guy in my last tri doing breaststroke. so what, there's always one, however you get it done, fine.

But he was swimming with us RIGHT UP THERE IN THE FRONT PACK. Boy, were we PIZZED. not only did we all get booted at least once or twice, but ... well now that's just damned embarrassing!

There's video proof of this. Unbelievable.

I just hate kicking in the water.  And I don't think that there is enough benefit/energy expended to warrant it during a long swim.  I do flutter gently ala T.I.

Yesterday and today were my first medium/long rides outdoors in the cold (30's). Anyone have any tips for riding in the cold. I have never rode too much (some MTBing) this time of year. I wore Bacalva, Underarmor cold gear turtle neck, standard jersey, underarmor compression tights, standard bibs, wool liner sock, standard cycling sock, full finger cycling gloves, and fleece gloves. I WAS STILL FREEZING! It took me 10 minutes after I got home just to feel my fingers and toes again. When I left I also had one of the chemical toe warmers.

Any tips???

Don't know if you already saw this (biking tights rec) - but maybe helpful?

Wow, I'm all caught up after not having time to read for a week or more.  So, while I'm sitting here craving a Pop Tart, all I can remember is the rhythm setter.

We got about 6 inches of snow on Sunday and Monday, so our city is just getting back to normal.  These folks flip at a dusting, so 6 inches really halted things.

Still working on my race plans for the year.  It'll probably be another month or so before all of the races are posted for the state.  I'm ready to get a few paid for!

Agreed!

A-ha ... but while TI does not specifically teach kicking, the kick is still considered critical in powering the body forward--really as an extension of body rotation. kicking that follows TI form and philosophy is going to be significant and fairly powerful--usually a two-beat kick, which isn't that much like a flutter.

That said, whether you're a TI/TI-trained swimmer or not, you shouldn't have to put a lot of energy into the kick. in terms of muscular fatigue, proper freestyle kicking isn't going to tire your legs out. Improper kicking, or poor overall form especially regarding rotation which will affect kicking, is definitely an energy drain! but the solution to that is not kicking less.

Again, it all comes back to swimming with good form. That's really the ultimate goal for everyone, and a practice even the very best of swimmers continue as an integral part of their training.

Thank you so much for sharing this!  I started using some of it today and it was incredibly helpful for me.  It is so hard (as a new swimmer) to understand what is being described when just reading something, but this post did a great job of helping me really be able to visualize it.  Thanks!!

Thank you so much for sharing this!  I started using some of it today and it was incredibly helpful for me.  It is so hard (as a new swimmer) to understand what is being described when just reading something, but this post did a great job of helping me really be able to visualize it.  Thanks!!

Thanks from me, too. I read this years ago when I started the swim stuff and it was really good to review it all. BFD is a BFD, at least his swim posts are!!!

What? No Mad Manatee postings yet this morning? You all must be out training your booties off then, right?

I'm off to walk the dogs and then run a bit. Hope you're all enjoying your weekend!

ha ha ha ha I was just going to ask what everybody's weekend training or heck just plans were like

I got a nasty insect bite on my foot that turned into a suppurating wound, with bruising and swelling (not to mention itching and burning)

I ran on it last night (I know, I know, but it wasn't that bad WHILE I was running ...), but it isn't doing so well today

Mighta swam, but it's storming as usual

Mighta cycled, but I'm not at home where I've got the trainer.

I suppose I could do yoga or dance with my sister's dogs or something ... I'm waiting for my cats to get fixed and was supposed to pick them up this evening, but then the vet said she wanted to keep them overnight. RRRRRRRG cats.

If there's indeed nothing wrong with them and my foot's not any worse tomorrow, I'll do my usual Sunday morning OWS with piglet accompaniment and tropical-fish viewing.

sorry to hear about your bite (it's not a piglete bite is it??)    and hope your kitties or ok!

Plans for the weekend... well my tri group went snowshoeing this morning instead of running but my achillies is acting up and I don't want to mess with it any more than I have too... so I'll might head over to the track and continue with my run/walks of 3 & 1's. It is very frutrating watching them - and not being able to do anything.  I keep having to remind myself... PATIENCE!!!   Might jump in the pool while I am there and try some of the things from the 10points.

Tomorrow we have a cycle & strength session with the group.   ... so that's the plan!  And I'm sure a few hours of shovelling out from the snow that just does NOT stop coming up here!

Have a great weekend everyone!

Hope you have fun celebrating your daughters bday!

I had a nice swim this morning using the drill trips from Yanti's link ~ well kind of nice, I find I end up getting a lot of water in my mouth when doing these drills.  While I don't enjoy my drowning exercises, I find it is so helpful already in seeing some mistakes I was making!  I'm still waiting to hear back from the Y to schedule my first lesson, so hopefully next week I'll be ready to go.  Have a great weekend every one!

A trainer ride for me today.  Was thinking about a run later, but after going to see Yogi Bear with my five year old and eating a bunch of candy.....ugh.  I'm might have to pass.

Does anyone have a tough time splitting up workouts?  I always have intentions of a workout in the morning and if I don't have time to fit it all in, I'll do a little workout in the afternoon.  Well, when afternoon comes, I just never am in the mood to workout.  So I have done most of my workouts all in the morning.   I'm just afraid when I ramp up my training for HIM, I know I'm going to have to split my workouts.

Hmmm, just HTFU I guess? Wink   Hope everyone is having a great weekend.  It's cold here.  Looking forward to spring.

I have no trouble splitting my workouts.  I usually end up splitting them in two and just throwing one out - like bad leftovers.  Wink   Acutally same issue here - can't seem to get the 2nd one in on a regular basis, but I'm hoping it is due to needing to do it inside Vs outside, how dark it gets so early, etc.  Once summer gets here and I get into longer runs and rides, I will want to be doing the outside after work.  One helpful hint - do the hard one alone in the AM and get a workout partner for the afternoon sessions.

There are some people who run on a regular basis at lunch and I'll join them for a 2nd workout even though it is not the length or intensity called for.  As a 2nd, it is not what was planned, but it is better than nothing.  Then if I can get the full run in at night as a 3rd.

All the stuff I read on busy schedule training indicates keep as much as possible in the AM before starting day.  Not sure how I'm going to do it (also looking at HIM this year and FIM next), but if others can do it - so can I.
