newbz - 2011-01-10 3:05 PM Deb, Indoor tracks are normally harder or rock solid compared to outdoor tracks, and the sharper turns (most indoor tracks that you race on are 200m, and many gyms have even smaller ones) can beat your knees up something fierce.

Yeah, the track in town has pretty sharp turns - it's 225 metres.  To be honest, I can't think of a place around here that has an outdoor track though - and Calgary has a population of a million, so as Canadian cities go, it's pretty big.  I think it's the climate; it's just not something that tends to get built because so much of the year, it's unusable.  Same thing with outdoor pools.

I'm making it sound like it's a winter wasteland here.  It's not at all.  We just get every type of weather.

Having said that, today I do have muscle soreness that I don't normally get from running.  Nothing that feels really concerning, but it's quite likely from the track.

jgerbodegrant - 2011-01-10 5:30 PM Off to do a classy 3400 yds at the pool.  Whew, Monday's is always tough.

I have to admit that I am in awe of some of you guys.  It takes me 14 minutes to do 500 metres (which is close enough to yards).  So, to do 3400, it would take me an hour and forty minutes.  I have a feeling it won't be taking you nearly as long!

Having said that, I've got my first session with the tri club tonight.  I'm a little nervous, but I know I'll get through it - one way or another...  There's only 12 people in the program.  I know 2 of them who will be around the same pace as me, and with 4 lanes, it will be 3 people in each.  So, at least I won't be holding people up in my lane.

Ohhhh, long couple of sh*tty days.  After getting into the new year swing my Grandmother passed so I've been doing nothing the past 4 days getting arrangements together culminating in the burial today, hence my lack of activity on here as well.  Try to get back in the swing of things tomorrow.

Sorry for your loss.  Training can be a good escape to clear your mind, but don't feel guilty about missing workouts.  Family first.

Aw man, I'm sorry to hear that.  That's definitely a rough way to start out the year.  I hope everyone in the family is coping all right.  Get back to it when you can.  These things take time.

You'll get there, it'll take some work but once you start getting the swimming down the jumps come a lot faster than you'd think. The first few months will be the hardest and then things will really start clicking.

my first few months swimming it took me well over 16min to do 500 yards. i've taken over 10min off it since then. As you move along those longer workouts will seem a lot easier.

Very sorry to hear about your loss.  Sincerest condolences from my family to yours.

I have a lot of experience with death/dying and the grieving process.  I understand that questions can come up after the fact when there may not be someone around to answer them.  If you have any questions about anything feel free to message me.

My official weigh in is 225lb, which puts me at 40 lost since early Sept.  I had been at 227-8 for the last 3-4 weeks but just couldn't get those few pounds to make it a nice even number.  I'm sure the holidays played a lil role in that.

Wasn't able to swim with the group today, but the instructor was nice enough to write me up a training plan for the day.  Swimming seems much more fun in a group.  Did my run as well.  Still need to get my stretching and core training done.

Looks like I'll actually be able to get a workout in after work today!  Woohoo!  Not too sure if I should just go "run" or try and make something more of it...the next 2-3 weeks are going to be filled with many appointments and briefings getting us ready to re-deploy back home, so structure is pretty much going to be out the window.  Just have to squeeze in the workouts when I can...

Any suggestions on the run today?  Should I look at just running long and slow (70-80 mins) or should I try for more of a tempo run (45 mins)?

We are getting 5-10 depending on who you ask/where you look.

It actually just started about 5 min ago, nothing but clouds all day and now its coming down fast. I'm supposed to be heading out for a 2nd run in a few but i'm considering opening a bottle of wine and making food instead......

i'd just head out and run with whatever time you have and not worry about structure. just get some time in and enjoy it. You dont have to run hard to get a fitness boost from it.

Sounds like a plan either way.  I'm going to go turn the heat on in the attic and get on the drainer for an hour or so.

So, I had my first swim with the tri group yesterday and it was FANTASTIC.  I already feel like I've gotten as much out of it as I did from the entire session of the last swim class I took.  Most of the time was spent working on drills to help with body rotation.

In other news, the weather sucks, and I'm seriously falling into cold weather doldrums - both in life and training.  I don't want to run at the track all week.  But, even more I don't want to run outside in the cold.  It was -30c (-22f) this morning without even accounting for wind.  Now granted there wasn't much wind, but it hurts just going outside in that.  And, as a stay at home mom, I'm going kind of nutty because the kids are stir crazy too.  Going outside is necessary for all our mental health.  There's no end in sight either.  The weather forecast is lousy as far ahead as it goes.

Okay.  I'm a whiner.  I'm done moaning now.

I may have an opportunity to get a run in the afternoon tomorrow and it should be 10 degrees or so warmer at that time of the day.  I'll suck it up and do an outdoor run then and do the rest of this week's runs at the track.  Hopefully, it will be bearable on the weekend so that I can do my long run outside.  I don't think it's a great idea to do too many long runs at the track.

I am sitting here waiting for the snow to start......Today is an off day for me and tomorrow a trainer day so I think I planned it right  Wink eventhough I do enjoy running in the snow.

Glad to see everyone training hard....I have done 3 half hour runs this year and have found my desire to run again. Cool

52min on the exercise bike today, followed by a 10min treadmill run.  I'm on pace to destroy my cycling time from 2010 by the end of February... I guess that shows how much I slacked off on the bike!  Today's workout had some 55-65rpm intervals, where I turn up the resistance.  This is something I've never really done before... I usually just spun at a pretty comfortable pace at the gym, so I know I will see improvements this year.  It's nice to have a plan to follow.  Can't wait for this season!  Less than 6 months until the duathlon that always starts my year.  Last year, I had issues with my derailleur and went 4min slower on the bike than the previous year.  Hoping to blow that time out of the water this year (25-26km/hr pace - I really want to maintain 30km/hr since that would put me MOP and let me take more advantage of the awesome runs I am expecting this year).
