Yeah, the weather is also going to play a big part in what my Biking Volume will be. I guess I should be optimistic though and hope that IT WILL EVENTUALLY, HOPEFULLY warm up!! I'll post my numbers tomorrow. I really got to think about this Good on you Marcia for grabbing the bull by the horns and just laying those numbers down!! Truth is, for me, (like everyone else) life is crazy-busy. And if I'm going to get all my training in, I'm going to have to start dragging my butt out of bed early in the mornings. Veteran 265 | Subject: RE: Dream Chaser's 'Set a Goal and Capture it!' Mentor Group - CLOSED Ok - I was fairly consistent thru March given the week out of town and am overall happy to still be motivated 3 months into this....that is my PR!! Whoo-hoo!! :D Building on that - I did not get the amount or quality of training done in March that I had planned. I will have to think about this for a day or two and come up with some specific, attainable yet uncomfortable goals for April. I need to get more into a tri -training mind set...it has been hard because I have found such positive results with the CrossFit. Even though I haven't run anything over 3 miles (maybe one 5-6?-can't remember) while CrossFitting - this past weekend I ran a 58min 5miler - definitely not podium material but better than any previous time at that mileage for me by 10+min. So...deceisions....decisions..... Can't thank all of you enough for making me stay focused by being a part of a group. Though I don't inspire enough or ask the questions and actively participate often within the group - I still look forward to reading others experiences, questions and advice. That involvement has helped me feel apart of something and has helped keep me motivated - so Thanks to you all!! Now....back to work....and pondering those goals for April...... |

Subject: RE: Dream Chaser's 'Set a Goal and Capture it!' Mentor Group - CLOSED Thanks for sharing your thoughts, John. It's funny you mention "the group" ...cause lately it's really been sinking in with me that Triathlon is NOT a solo sport. It just isn't. I was watching Ironman Western Australia and the Patrick Vernay the favorite who had won the race a few times in the past specifically said, "I don't want to have to do all the work on the bike." Meaning, he didn't want to lead the race. In most races, the top groups 'work together'. They stay draft legal, but they take turns setting the pace and 'doing the work'. Today at the pool, I had decent swimmers in the lane to my left and right. It pushed me. It made me 'up' my game. No way I swim as hard by myself. The benefit of a group is just overwhelming. For training it's safer, you can support one another, bounce ideas of each other, push one another. There is just hands-down, no question that training with a group (or at the very least a single training partner) is far superior in so many ways then going it alone. I sometimes almost feel like it's cheating, it's such an advantage. Oh, and here are my Goal Numbers for April. They are basically 15% above my average for the last two months, and just below what my training calls for. With my 'A Race" in July, I like to think of April/May/June as the three 'Big Boy Months'. The winter was about laying the base, the foundation... the next 3 months are about building on that foundation. April Goal Numbers:
John already started with the March Review Which is a great idea. I'm very content with my Run/Swim Volume and Run/Swim fitness. The Bike is my big question mark. I think I have some good fitness, but until I ride long outside, I won't know. And I really would have like to gotten in another 3 to 4 hours (60 miles) in March, but I sacrificed some rides for my two Running Races. And I made that decision and I'm happy with it. Just need to now ***focus*** on the bike over the next 3 months. |

Expert 4923 Middle River, Maryland | Subject: RE: Dream Chaser's 'Set a Goal and Capture it!' Mentor Group - CLOSED Ah, April. Transition month for me. Transition (we hope) from this gawdawful cold weather to nice warm, actually-bikeable-outside-weather-without-wearing-battle-gear weather. Mid-60s (that's degrees...not miles ) runs in the State Park. Can't wait. Also a transition month for my training, moving from my crazy learn-to-swim plan to a regular triathlon plan, but in between that I have two weeks where I'm just going to work out by feel and run some run races. I have a 10K and a 5K scheduled right now, plus I'll probably due a LT test on the bike at some point. Also need to get some good miles on the new bike if it ever stops being 40 degrees. Tri plan starts in earnest May 1st for my two "A" races on July 9th and August 14th. I'm thinking about: Swim: 25K yards Bike: 8-12 hours, depending on weather (I can't go past 90 minutes on the Expresso trainer without losing it) Run: 80 miles (a manageable, steady, consistent increase from my 17 mi per week right now) Strength and core work: 1+ hour per week I also gotta finish splitting about one more cord of firewood and stacking it...lugging those rounds around is quite a workout. Last two days of March are going to be run/strength days, as I'm on the road and it's cold outside. March should wind up being a pretty strong swim and run month, and OK on the bike and ST. Pretty consistent overall and I think I've started to forge the steel to make the sword. April and May will pound it into shape, and June will sharpen and hone it.

Hope everyone had a safe, good weekend of training. 4 days to finish up March. I'm probably going to take off today, and then I' m gonna try and bump up my bike volume a bit before month-end. For training it's safer, you can support one another, bounce ideas of each other, push one another. There is just hands-down, no question that training with a group (or at the very least a single training partner) is far superior in so many ways then going it alone. I sometimes almost feel like it's cheating, it's such an advantage. Unfortunately I haven't experienced this yet. I've tried to encourage my friends to take up different aspects of the sport and train with me and while they are supportive - they just aren't interested or sufficiently motivated. Even friends that have tried one years ago - trying to light that flame again. I tried to get hubby in to running but he likes short sprinting and I can't keep up. He'd sink in water. The closest I got was to inspire a good friend to do her first mini triathlon last summer. It was a great time swimming with her as she's really strong but it can be a challenge finding the time. Last summer I discovered my child's friend and my neighbour cycled (same bike/same speed) and we went out a couple of times and it was AWESOME! Pushing one another to pick up the pace and do some good hills. I'm hopeful we'll get back at it but again - schedules can be difficult to manage with kids/jobs etc. I could join a club or something but to be honest - with such limited time to train - I don't want to waste any of it with someone slower and there's a part of me that would worry about holding someone else back. I think you need to find that right 'group' that gets it and while 'together' you can also move 'alone' to push yourself. If that makes any sense. John already started with the March Review Which is a great idea. I'm very content with my Run/Swim Volume and Run/Swim fitness. The Bike is my big question mark. Regular 97 | Subject: RE: Dream Chaser's 'Set a Goal and Capture it!' Mentor Group - CLOSED Can't believe March has come and gone. It was like a blur, especially having a newborn and also managing chaos of my two rugrats. I would say that March was a lot better than February. I'm swimming consistently twice a week, averaging 1600yards per session (which lasts about 40 min depending on the workout). I'm keeping this twice a week because I don't want to overstress my shoulder. Run...I've been able to run twice a week, Sat moring a long run and shorter weekday moring. My weekday morning is all dependent on how much sleep I get the night before. I'm really disappointed in my bike. I've had a flat for about two months and I've been really lazy in not fixing my flat. Besides, its hard to find tube for my 650 size wheel. I need you guys to keep me accountable, I either need to repair my tube or buy a new tube. I need to ride or else I might as well just do a duathalon. Last month I noted that I wanted to join a local Tri club, I tried to get away to an intro meeting but hard to do when I know I need to relieve my wife of the newborn after work. But I'm going to try to do it next month.

Expert 640 Sun Prairie, WI | Subject: RE: Dream Chaser's 'Set a Goal and Capture it!' Mentor Group - CLOSED I am hoping that April finally brings some outdoor training weather. I am getting really tired of gym workouts. Hard to stay motivated indoors much longer. Spring and the longer days basically mark the start of my increased training as I start to build more volume into the summer. So hear is the total volume I am hoping to attain in April. 30 hours of total training. Not overly concerned with the flavor of training or distance, swim, bike and run. But a quick guess is: Run - 12 hours Bike - 12 hours Swim - 6 hours |

Considering that I am going to Atlanta for 2 weeks for the Passover hholiday I am going to hope to get through 3/4 of my sched which I will calculate when I get home from the gym. It's very hard to swim/bike/run when your eating all that matzah with the fam! On a posative note the wheathet is way beytter so I hope to get in some great outdoor runs and hilly bike rides. Also I added mumford and sons the cave to my work out play list! It totally pumps you up for intervals. Anyone have anyother songs you love to train with?? |

Subject: RE: Dream Chaser's 'Set a Goal and Capture it!' Mentor Group - CLOSED Hey guys, BIG NEWS: The company I am working for is making some big changes and revamping and I have to go to Brazil for 6 months. I'll be setting up a Logisitics Warehouse and Test Facility and it's going to be around-the-clock work for me starting this Thursday when I leave, and I won't be back until approximately late-October, early-November. Definitely before the Holidays. Unfortunately I will not have access to internet for the first few weeks, nor will I have time for anything but work. However, they are paying me a nice bonus to do this and I just couldn't turn down such an opportunity. So triathlon will have to wait until next year, and I look forward to logging back in this Autumn and seeing that everyone achieved there goals and trained consistently throughout the year. YOU GUYS ARE AWESOME!!! I'll miss everyone and I hope you all understand. |
