1.) What kind of bike do you ride?

I bought a 2010 Scott Speedster S30 this December.

2.) Are you confident in changing your bikes tire?

Yes not a problem, I have changed motorcycle tires on the trail in 5 minutes.

3.) Have you ever done an open water swim?

No, a little nervous about this. My first tri will be June 4th, right now the water temp is 53 and really merky from the snow melt in the mountains.

4.) Do you breath bilaterally or to one side?

I an breath bilaterally, but when I push my pace I breath to the right.

5.) How long have you been involved in endurance sports (running, biking, swimming, etc)

I ran my first race a 10k in 2009, followed that with a marathon and a couple 5k's. This is my first year of tri's

6.) Who's your favorite triathlete? (maybe you done even know one , thats totally cool too! )

Team Hoyt, he is the Man!

7.) Favorite Nutrition Suppliment you use? Don't have a favorite yet.

If you can hack off the swim, 70.3 gets easy after that.  I really love the distance.  They call it "The Perfect Distance".  It really is.  It's a very hard challenge, but it's not life consuming like 140.6.  You MUST train, you cannot BS your way through, but you don't have to train 20 hours a week.  It's longer than most will ever go.  The biggest problem you'll have is that once you finish you start to think..."if I just finished a half, how much harder could it really be????????"  The answer is that it's not twice the race, it's more, but it's also so spiritual, and so amazing, you just can't imagine.

Who's racing this weekend?

I'm at the end of a very trying week myself. I hate to taper, but I know I have to. Need to go sub 1:46:00 for the Great Western Half Marathon this weekend to get a preferred corral at the Chicago Marathon, would like to get under 1:45:00 but we'll see.

1.) What kind of bike do you ride?

Specialized Dolce Elite - have only had for a couple of months and ridden outside twice! My first road bike ever.

2.) Are you confident in changing your bikes tire? Nope, but I have changed one and will keep practicing.

3.) Have you ever done an open water swim? Not an actual race type swim! Grew up swimming in lakes and such, so not uncomfortable in open water at all.

4.) Do you breath bilaterally or to one side? Breaststroke anyone? I am going to perfect the actual crawl with breathing to one side sometime this summer I hope!

5.) How long have you been involved in endurance sports (running, biking, swimming, etc) Just started - as if you couldn't tell from my first four answers

6.) Who's your favorite triathlete? (maybe you done even know one , thats totally cool too! )

Read 17 hours to glory not long ago - found all of the triathletes in it super inspiring! Modern times - Chrissie of course

7.) Favorite Nutrition Suppliment you use? Short training distances and just a sprint on deck so haven't really worried about race nutrition (other than basic hydration). I do love a smoothie after for restoring some energy!

best of luck mark! looking forward to the report!

What is a preferred corral? is that an earlier start time?

I don't race until may 23rd.  I have a century in two weeks but it's a metric and I will be going SLOW!!

MTB today! Happy training everyone!

Chicago is such a huge race that you could be as much as 30 minutes off the clock if you're in the rear.  I believe they sold out 45,000 people this year.  So a preferred corral gets you seeded up front.  I'm shooting for C or D, depends on times.  If I can go 1:44:00 or better, I think that gets me to C.  Basically, you're in the top 8,000 or so.  Still a lot of people, but you're way ahead of most of the people who think they're going to be fast but then run 10:00 miles.  I love the course but hate the crowd.

Good luck this weekend, Mark!!!

Just finished the *longest* workout of my training program, and my last workout before starting to taper tomorrow. It was an interval/brick workout and looked like this:

bike 15:00
run 10:00
walk 5:00
bike 15:00
run 10:00
walk 5:00
bike 15:00
run 10:00
bike 15:00
run 10:00

I actually went slightly over on the bike times, but I ended up going 18.25 miles and running 3.25 miles in a total of 1:43:15 (not counting the 10:00 walking). In 22-26 mph winds I averaged 16.5 mph on the bike and hit a max speed of 26.5 mph. My average cadence on the bike was 90.

I'm happily exhausted and feel great about this workout! About 1/2 way through I considered just doing 3 bricks instead of 4, but I just kept telling myself what Mark told me: I can quit now, but I'll be selling myself short! After the 3rd set I felt so close it would be silly to quit, and the cool thing was that when I finished I knew I could have done a 5th round if I had to!

Great job, QD! The mental fitness is as important as the physical. Your doing great with that too--the wind yesterday was brutal.  Hopefully the MN winds will die down in time for your tri but if not, you've trained through them and will do just great.

Henry, that is awesome!!! You are ready to race! The key to this week now is to manage your energy levels. With the reduction in training hours it is easy to feel a little off. Know it is normal and that this week prepares you to race better than any other. I will do a racing strategy post today our tomorrow that will discuss how to manage your effort during the race. Make sure you practice your transitions this week over and over. That is the easiest way to drop time, no additional fitness required!

Nice workout Henry, that is a new format to me. I might need to try that.

Hope your race goes well Mark!!

I had a 5k race today with the Family, my son ran a 35 minute 5k with my wife right behind him at 37 minutes. I ran a it in 25 minutes coming in at 5th place overall, there was only 50 people there. It felt good though, I ran the 3 miles back to my house then did a reverse brick and jumped on the bike. The wind really picked up and slowed me way down. I did 30 miles mixed with 10 sprints at 24 mph for 6 minutes each. I am feeling really good about the bike, still a little nervous about the swim and run. I have another 5k next Saturday and the half marathon on May 21st. I am having a hard time trying to figure out my taper for the Half Marathon because I have my first oly tri two weeks after. I want to do really well on both, I was thinking on tapering normal for the half then recovering with swimming and bike riding for the week after. Then getting a couple of short runs in Saturday and Tuesday the week before the tri. Taking it easy the that week also but keeping everything loose and ready. Any Ideas???  Hope everyone's weekend goes well!!!!

good work Henry! looks like you are ready to kick some butt on ur race!

garrunning, congrats on ur 5th place finish.  Way to also work in a brick at the end of the day. Sounds like your putting in the work!

I woke up early this morning and hiked 2 miles into my favorite fishing spot.  My other favotire hobby is Bass fishing which doesnt go hand in hand with triathlons so fishing usually gets put on hold.  Did well fishing and then went home and crashed on the sofa!

Headed out for a PM road run here shortly once the temps drop a bit . Gotta catch up with all you guys loggin those miles!

Sorry, I am slow in checking in.  Loved reading everyone's answers...

1.) What kind of bike do you ride?  Specialized Ariel.

2.) Are you confident in changing your bikes tire?  Just bought the bike in March so I haven't learned yet.  It is on my to do list!

3.) Have you ever done an open water swim?  Not yet.  Will train at our local lake when it opens on Memorial Day.

4.) Do you breath bilaterally or to one side?  I breathe to the left, but would like to learn to breathe bilaterally.

5.) How long have you been involved in endurance sports (running, biking, swimming, etc)  I started running a year and a half ago.  I am new to biking and swimming.

6.) Who's your favorite triathlete? (maybe you done even know one  , thats totally cool too! )  I think Sr. Madonna Buder is an inspiration.  Actually any triathlete is an inspiration and I can't wait to become one myself!

7.) Favorite Nutrition Suppliment you use?  I LOVE chocolate mint Gu.  Yum.

I'm running another half marathon tomorrow.  My knee is still not 100% (I have an MRI scheduled for Tuesday) so I am not "racing" for a great time, but I would like to come in between 2:05 and 2:10.

I am doing a 5k next Sunday so that will be a good test to see how my 5k time is shaping up.  My PR was in December, but I finished almost 4 minutes slower in March after missing 2.5 months of running.  I don't expect to hit my PR, but I hope I am at least faster than March!  That will give me an idea of what to shoot for in my next half marathon which is the following week.  I would like to get back to a sub-2 hour half  by then if my knee cooperates.

I hope everyone has a great training or racing weekend!

Jacqui

Success! Went to bed with a cold coming on woke up with it full on. Knee felt odd too, right out of nowhere. So, time to step up the mental game. Had a plan, stuck to it or just faster the whole way to the 10 mile marker, then just let it rip. I got faster every mile after the first three as planned. Flew the last three. 1:43;22 was the result. Had a target of 1:45:00. Old pr was 1:47:29. Track work does pay off if you work hard and stay with it. Thanks for all the well wishes. It really inspires knowing we are all pulling for each other!

Everything was cool with the knee once we got going. Just a mental hoop to jump through in the beginning. I definitely got the coral I wanted, maybe even one better.

The good news is I placed 2nd in my age group for the half marathon this morning.  (Perhaps I should leave it at that, lol.)  The bad news is I was slower than I planned.  The route was super hilly -- probably the hilliest I have run, so that is my excuse (plus a cold and a bum knee).  However, I was able to pick off some key individuals during the race and was never passed by them.  That, and my last mile being the fastest, was also a plus.

jacqui congrats on your 2nd place finish! Hilly courses are always tough if they catch you off guard, especially if they are real late or early in the race!

I finally had a good run today. I had been feeling tired and "sluggish" on all my runs since my half marathon.  It might have been a combination of training through that week with not taper, and then getting the flu at the end of the week.  However, today I went out on a road run at a nice slow pace and felt great! Did just under 8 miles and came in at an 8:30 pace.  Still hilly, but the course was shaddy and not too many cars! Felt good to have a successful run!

keep it up!

Definitely what I was thinking! I'm just under two weeks out now from my race and I love hearing your experiences!

I've been diligently doing one track workout a week and on Friday I did a more or less tempo brick (11k on my bike followed immediately by just over a 2km run) for my try-a-tri. Feeling good and ready!
