Master 2238 Dallas | Subject: RE: Ernesto's group (5th season) - Closed Ran track today, only 35 minutes out of 45 planned. The High School Coach had to run me off because of a Cross Country/Track training session. Too bad, I wanted to test myself against the youngsters... The good thing is that I got a schedule from him and I know now what times to avoid. It's a brand new track, in great condition. In the evening a swam with the squad, got demoted one lane because of missing pretty much the entire month of December and not being able to keep up with the pace. I quickly faded from 1:20s to 1:30s and later upper 1:30s/100y. Greg Swim 3- Bike 2- Run 2 - Rest 0 - Total 7 Time 06:30:39 Edited by ernestov 2013-01-03 10:30 PM |

Expert 1255 Philadelphia, Pennsylvania | Subject: Marathon Training Blues Silly question time: Is it normal to feel a little down and frustrated in the middle of marathon training? I did have my first ever chiro sessions (two) in the last 2 weeks, just because someone told me I needed adjusted. All my runs were going reasonably well until about the last 2 weeks, off and on. Now, in the 13th week of training, I'm really struggling. It's not fun anymore, I'm feeling worn out. I am on a 55 mile/wk plan. I have had to cut two runs short in the last 10 days due to just not being in the groove. If this is normal, I'll just ignore it. If not, any ideas/suggestions on what to do about it? Expert 1480 Somewhere in the Swamps of Philly | Subject: RE: Marathon Training Blues jackiep - 2013-01-03 11:50 PM Silly question time: Is it normal to feel a little down and frustrated in the middle of marathon training? I did have my first ever chiro sessions (two) in the last 2 weeks, just because someone told me I needed adjusted. All my runs were going reasonably well until about the last 2 weeks, off and on. Now, in the 13th week of training, I'm really struggling. It's not fun anymore, I'm feeling worn out. I am on a 55 mile/wk plan. I have had to cut two runs short in the last 10 days due to just not being in the groove. If this is normal, I'll just ignore it. If not, any ideas/suggestions on what to do about it? Jackie Jackie - Running 6x will burn you out and is a lot of frequency for a first marathon. While I designed a 6x week plan for my fall marathon, I always had one day I could opt out of whether it be for mental or physical rest. Sometimes I needed it after a big week others times not so. How are doing in terms of varying workouts? Are you doing speed, tempo, hill, LSD runs? I looked at your logs and it seems like you are running a number of longer repeat runs in a week at the same pace. I found that different run workouts helped to break up the monotony. |

Racing/training schedule for y'all: I'm planning on four races this year: 6/16 super-sprint 400M/12.5mi/2.5mi B race with my daughter I've reading Maf's book (as recommended by folks here...interesting stuff) and looking at his recommended yearly training/racing schedule and that should work just fine. My main question is what I should be doing now? I've basically spent the last three months raising my FTP and getting back into running (both successfully...yay!). As such, I've been spending a good deal of time cycling above my MAF HR (134, which just happens to be really close to my LTHR, which I guess is the point). Should I be toning the bike workouts down to lots of sweet spot riding for 3-4 months, and avoid the Sufferfests and 6 x 4's @ 105% and so forth? I'm fine on the running piece...lots of run/walk combo to keep the HR down and build the legs back up. Swimming is always going to be a challenge no matter what. |

For me, I started last year about this time and spent the first 90 days (except for races) below MAF, building my aerobic engine. After that initial 90 days, I then started including some speed work in. For Running I like doing Fartlek intervals, as my speed work. Last year, I still did The Sufferfest videos, but at that time my cycling muscles were not strong enough to get me over my MAF very often. I don't get to swim very often this time of year, and have never used HR for swimming. My montior always slips down, so I gave up. I will turn it over to Ernesto and others for Swimming and Cycling questions. Edited by JBacarella 2013-01-04 8:00 AM |

Expert 1109 Guatemala | Subject: RE: Ernesto's group (5th season) - Closed dangremond - 2013-01-02 2:36 PM Gang - the following mostly applies to those in Ernesto's Mentor group last year, but I think it can be interesting for everyone on this year's Team (I hope you all don't mind me doing this). I went back and added up all of the monthly challenges and then for fun added in all the months as if we had run a challenge from January 2012 to December 2012. Head and shoulders above everyone for the year was Gabe - I assume for that accomplishment he would get a Heavy Duty Tin Foil Medal!!! All told the group below worked out a total of approx. 184 days last year. Gabe himself had 22.5 days working out (keep that from your wife). On a 30 minute or greater workout measure - the team complete almost 4200 workouts or 11.5 per day (almost 1 per team member per day). Congrats to all for an awesome year and here's to even greater and broader success in 2013!!! I've attached the file if anyone wants to look at the underlying data.
*DISCLAIMERS - I added up many of the monthly totals myself, there may be mistakes or errors. If so I apologize. Also, I included folks above based on participation in a high majority of challenges. Mitch, thanks for taking the time to put this together, it is great to see how far we have gone as a group and the progress everyone has made, both training and racing wise in 2012. My high volume was in large part due to training for my 1st Ironman (IMTX) which was in May and the fear of the distance was a great motivator to get every workout in. |
