Soooo, does anyone have a good (and quick) cure for saddle sores? I have a lump, not huge, about the size of a peanut that is killing me. I have a 5 hour ride on Saturday so I'm hoping to do something with it by then. Suggestions gratefully received! |

I have a 5 hour ride on Saturday so I'm hoping to do something with it by then. Suggestions gratefully received! I would lance it. Needle, alcohol, gauze pad, lance. Also good are hot compresses or soaking in a hot bath with epsom salts (epson salts are awesome for lots of thing). I also find these to be really effective in preventing saddle sore / under carriage skin conditions : http://www.blissworld.com/bliss-ingrown-eliminating-pads-50-pads/?cid=2596&gclid=CM_drsjCmLcCFSjZQgodOW0A5w& |

Extreme Veteran 828 North Shore, MA. | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 and UHCoog's Mentor Group-Closed Thanks, Kelly. I tried stabbing it when I first got them. I was able to get rid of one, but this one seemed too deep. I'll try again and see if its ready to go or not, but man it's painful to touch. I have a syncope reaction to pain so I have to be a little careful or I'll be passed out on the floor lol I assume the alcohol is required in copious amounts and should be downed first ;-) |

You will do great I am sure!Jen, the only thing I can think of is to check whether the cleats and the pedals for the Shimanos are clean, not worn, and have a little bit of lube on them to make engaging easier. If that doesn't work, then definitely switch them out for something you have confidence in. As you said, even if they ended up working perfectly on race day, you don't want to have to wonder/worry about it. The Columbia Triathlon is Sunday, so I'm tapering this week. I did a short run yesterday and some core work and felt great. Then did a 1200 m swim this morning and feel wiped out. Not sure why, and I'm sort of puzzled by it. I'm going to do light workouts or nothing for the rest of the week and hope things work out ok... |

Looks like the oldest boy made it through with nothing. Jealous... Also if anyone wanted to and had time here is the blog to the family that lost the baby recently. Just amazing to be a part of their lives and what is going on.Scott - am excited and also a bit nervous for you. Will try to follow. Matt - good luck as well. I went to Centennial high and have swum in Centennial Lake a bunch. You have worked hard. Knock em dead. Larkin - I seem to think that you are doing the Columbia tri too right? x2 what I said above. Hope you are feeling better. Anyone else racing this weekend? http://rancourtfamily.blogspot.com Edited by kidtri33 2013-05-15 12:21 PM |

I'm going to read some more and try everything mentioned here before I swap out pedals. Jen, don't know if it was posted but you can change the tension. There is a visual piece you can see on how much tension there is. I can take a picture later when I get home. They came pretty tight and I had to bring it down some. |

Rubbing alcohol should be used on the needle, a bottle of wine should go in your mouth. |

Champion 6107 Out running or enjoying a fine glass of red... | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 and UHCoog's Mentor Group-Closed Hey, guys - I'm trapped in a week-long class (trapped is unfair - I'm really enjoying it, but it cuts in to my BT and training time)...so I haven't been around much. For you guys racing Richmond this weekend, post up your numbers/swim times after they're posted - I'll be there cheering on hubster. The girls and I will have plenty of cowbell... (I'll also be at PowerKids - my 2 girls are racing as well.) |

Veteran 580 | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 and UHCoog's Mentor Group-Closed Kelly - So I read up about the Hoka One One and I think I get the pros associated with their shoes. I also read some reviews that did not look upon it favorably. Here is one that is a proponent of the more minimalist shoe. http://naturalrunningcenter.com/2013/01/12/comfort-question-running-pillows-hoka-one/ I know nothing about shoes and have a couple of questions. 1) I think you tended to favor the more neutral shoe - so could you explain the pros that you see associated with Hoka One One. And (this goes out to all)...the proponents of the more minimalist shoe say that it helps with form/running whereas the extra cushion and support of some shoes do the opposite. How would these arguments apply for someone with flat feet (me). |

Extreme Veteran 863 | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 and UHCoog's Mentor Group-Closed Sorry I have been quiet lately. I had a work conference last week and then met my family in VA at my inlaws. I raced Sunday, here is the race report:http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=488177. Work has been crazy this week as well as kid activities.
Wishing ALL of our racers a great race!! |

And (this goes out to all)...the proponents of the more minimalist shoe say that it helps with form/running whereas the extra cushion and support of some shoes do the opposite. How would these arguments apply for someone with flat feet (me). Here's my favorite article on the shoes: http://www.slowtwitch.com/Products/Running_Footwear_by_brand/Hoka_One_One/What_Hoka_Means_3376.html Here's another one on shoe height and ramp angle: http://www.slowtwitch.com/Products/Running_Footwear_by_type/Shoe_Height_and_Ramp_Angle_1948.html You're correct that I generally favor the most minimalist shoe an individual person can wear. While the Hoka One One is cushioned, its cushioned on both the forefoot and heel, has a low ramp angle (4 mm -- the same as they Saucony Kinvaras) and doesn't have over design in a roll bar, heel crash pad or fore foot lugs. In fact it has no high-density foam on the insole's medial side, no post, no plate, no wave. I haven't run much in the One One but I can tell you because of the way the outsole is design its almost impossible to heel strike in these shoes. Also while the shoes look huge they're incredibly light. After a few more runs, I'll write up a review. For now I think they're interesting and they're likely to encourage good form without tons of over design. |

Champion 6107 Out running or enjoying a fine glass of red... | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 and UHCoog's Mentor Group-Closed Nice run this morning at 5:15...awesome that it is almost light then - kind of like a twi-dawn? Not quite sunrise, but not pitch black? Whatever that time is - it was good. Followed plan (60 minutes, strides every 10) and hope to get in the plan 30-min easy spin tonight to stretch out legs. Unfortunately it's grading time - so between that and the class this week, I may have to squeeze that out. But I'm hoping. |

Extreme Veteran 3020 | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 and UHCoog's Mentor Group-Closed Slow as molasses in the pool today. Lots of off stroke work, and I'm not the strongest at fly and breast. I felt as if I worked every muscle in body, and I like that feeling. 1:25 on the trainer later today with some Z3 intervals. I have to say with the training and my kids' hectic schedules, I cherish my off days. I remember when I used to hate them. LOL |
