Shawn:  Sounds like you have some good goals for this year.  I'm also thinking about trying an Olympic distance at the end of the season.  We'll see how the sprints go first.

I signed up for my first tri yesterday!!!  My first will be the Parris Island Sprint on 3/15.  I'm SO excited!!

Good on ya! Now you have something specific to train towards and should make your planning so much easier since you know the race date. What are the distances for this race?

I also just registered for the Superseal (Oly) on April 6th. Someone on this site once said if you put your money on the line then your more commited and at $90 bucks I'm commited.

It's a sprint.  The exact distances are 500m swim/15 mile bike/5K run.  It's supposed to be a fast, flat course, but I've also heard that it's usually freezing and very windy.

I arrived in Orlando today for a five day conference.  My husband and oldest son (3) are coming down tomorrow so that we can go to Disney on Saturday and Sunday.  I haven't been to Disney since I was 10, so I'm REALLY excited!

I just got done with a 58 minute bike ride in the hotel gym...I think I'm officially tri training obsessed!!  I could have gone to bed at 8:00 for the first time in YEARS, but instead I'm working out in the land of Mickey!

Hey mentor/ees. Tonight was my first night clipped into the saddle. I only lasted 5 minutes. Besides getting in the saddle more, any advice on how to, ummmm Harden(?) up my soft parts? Owwww I plan on getting on that bike everynight for as long as I can stand it. Nothing else bothered me, which was great, since I was expecting it to bother my knees.

Hey Terri!  nicely done

well, the only thing I've found that helps is either more time or more padding - if anyone has any other advice I'm definitely all ears!

There's a type of body butter stuff you can rub in the chamois of your bike shorts that is said to increase the amount of time you can be comfortable in the saddle.  I don't know if I'd do that for a short ride, for the clean up factor involved.....but it's something to consider.  I have a sample pack of it somewhere, I will see if I can find the name.  You can also alternate sitting and standing to allow blood to flow back into the area....and be sure to shift around to see if there's a more comfortable position...finally, you may want to seek out a comfier seat.  I have a fat gel seat on my mountain bike and when I get on that after usually riding my road bike, it feels like sitting in an easy chair!  And yes, time in the saddle is time in the saddle!!!

My sister is in Orlando right now, and she's really mad about the weather--it's colder there than it is here in Seattle!!  Still, you are in Disneyworld, whee!!!!

Beth, thanks for the swimming info, I am taking it all to heart!!  I'd love to hear a bit more about paddles, fins and other accessories when you have the time.

Shawn, I am watching.

I must admit it's mostly for me and my husband.   We would have waited a few more years to come with the boys if not for the conference. We left the baby behind so that we could get around easier.  I can't wait!!!!

Terri, you are awesome! Five minutes is great, and congrats on your newfound cycling abilities. (Don't forget to practice clipping in/out until it's second nature, as well).

Have hubby do a rudimentary bike fit for you, unless you have already had a pro fit done. (Ask about bike fit details if you like).

More padding as Bethie said is also a good idea. If you don't want to buy new/dif bike shorts, apply chamois butter (Butt Butt'r, etc.) to the tender bits.

What kind of saddle are you riding on?

[Cool, Leslie and a bunch of others posted while I was AFK eating dinner ] Yep, all that's good advice.

Shawn, you now officially have a bunch of women with whips circling you. I understand that's how you like it, but if I were you, I'd be afraid ... be very afraid ... so afraid that you keep training ...

well done....every journy begins with the first step.
make sure that you have a comfortable seat and shorts. the proper bike fit is priceless-not only for overall comfort, but also injury prevention. soon you will be enjoying hours in the saddle. great job.

Well I think I'm regressing again in the sickness department. The stuff coming from my lungs doesn't look to healthy. I think I'm force to hit the doc this weekend when I return home. Hence I will be lowering my goal requirements for the week and maybe avoid the pool altogether due to the temp in the evenings.

With that said I probably shouldn't have gone out last night. I must be getting old, I had a hang over from just three beers. Coffee is my friend this morning.

I agree with a few here on this subject. A case of butt butter should do per ride. If it doesn't work at least it would make for a funny story. LOL

I have a really good pair of cycling shorts. I looked around for a long time to find a pair in Athena size with the thickest pad I could find. I also have a Terry's Butterfly saddle. As to the butt butt'r...does it numb you or something? Ignorance is not always bliss! LOL

Man, Hector, that sucks. Just as you were starting to improve, too! Well, you know what to do to take care of yourself. I hope this illness doesn't sideline you too long.

Terri, great job with the first ride! Speaking as someone who only started riding in August, I can tell you that it really does get more comfortable the more you get on it. I've found that shifting my position on the seat from time to time helps. Now I can go at least an hour before I have any real discomfort. I've thought about buying some real bike shorts (vs. the tri shorts I usually wear), but since I won't be riding bike shorts in my race, I figure I should get used to the shorts with less padding. I might look into that Butt Buttr, though.

My arm seems to be doing much better now, guys. I was thinking of tossing a little bit of strength training into my regular regimen, with a focus on core exercises and sets to build strength for swimming (so I can avoid injuring myself again). Anyone have any good core workouts and/or exercises that are good for swimming?

Poor Hector. BELIEVE ME, I am feeling your pain right now ... two hot dates for the weekend, housemate is out of town, storm front moving in ... and I had to cancel it all! Hack, hack, rumble, cough.

Erin, strength exercises are probably a good idea for your shoulder in terms of injury prevention ... but you might want to hold off until your shoulder is way past all better. Ease back into the swimming first and continue to build up; if you have problems, better to address your form first. If you don't have problems, then is the time to work some strength training in.

Putting strength exercises on structures that are not 100% healed can cause some damage. Now if you were able to work with a skilled and knowledgeable physical therapist, that's a different story, because they know the fine art of building the surrounding and/or opposing musculature to actually facilitate healing, and then progressing the exercises.

Wow, we all have some healing to do. Yeah I think I will be staying home this weekend, especially if it rains.

Yanti, you won't let me have any fun at all!

Kidding. What you say makes a ton of sense. I would love to hook up with a good physical therapist and/or personal trainer and a good swim coach and maybe a tri coach, but alas. It's a combination of money and being with Kaiser (the PTs I've been to in the past have been less than helpful) and not being too impressed with the trainers/coaches I've worked with at my Y. Hopefully the next swim coach I hook up with will have some good advice for avoiding injury. At this point, I don't know if it's that I'm doing something horribly wrong with my stroke or if I just pushed myself too hard for a couple weeks in a row.

Anyway, thanks again for the advice. I'll put off strength training for a while and ease back into swimming. Looks like it's another run for me tonight!

LOL ... not really ... I just have a long history of not listening to very good and concerned coaches/mentors/friends/training partners/self and then paying the price. As my coach says (and I've said it enough now it's my line too!) "I've already done everything wrong so that you can do everything right."
