You just know me when I get excited Notice how he's got his arm perfectly draped so the side touches the side of ... yeah, I noticed that too. And he bought me a gelato ... he looks quite pleased with himself (and me, I think) ... lot of licking and slurping sounds. Okay, okay, okay, the piglet the piglet the piglet. I also met some extraordinary athletes today and watched both a national and Asian record being broken (in weightlifting). She tried for the world but couldn't quite make it--she's 35kg and lifted 90kg for the Asian record! Kingsley and I paced an arm-amputee in his first 50m free swim race ever (he was the only swimmer for that event in that category)--and holy shyte, he's a new swimmer (just a few months of training) but I was struggling to keep up with him in the first 25! There was also a blind swimmer who's really good--he doesn't know how to ride a bike but is willing to learn All I noticed is your huge smile. X2 - Love seeing that smile... I know I'm a bit late, but congrats on the coach assignment. |

Master 1890![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Gig Harbor | Subject: RE: Mad Manatee Mentors 2013: CLOSED (exc/ Pop Tart bribes)Swimming Critique Winner Is - All of you! Great advice from EVERYONE that chimed in. Here are the critiques I did on myself, before posting the question to you all:
Michael: You hit the #1 thing I noticed on the head! Thank you for also pointing out that my kick is too wide. I mostly noticed the knee, especially when I breath. You also hit #4! Hands Marie: Thanks for the compliment on the video Darren: No way I'll shoot you down. That's a very good observation and #5 on my list. Great catch! FYI - the "glide" I have is on purpose - but the video revealed I may be doing it to much. My glide is the result of many, many laps of "swim golf". After this round of refinements to my stroke, I will probably adjust my cadence again. For anyone that doesn't know - swim golf is a drill that helps you find the most efficient stroke for your type of swimming. You count your strokes per 50 yards / meters and add them to your time. Do a 50 yards sprint, count your strokes and add it to your time. This is your "Golf Score". Then do a 50 where you over exaggerate your glide, add that to your time and get your "Golf Score". Your score will be a bit higher than the 50 sprint, but your heart rate is way lower and you can breath. Most likely you will find that your times were not that far apart. As a result of this drill, I "glide" as long as I can, without sacrificing too much speed. When racing a swim meet (shorter distances) - cadence is the focus, however in triathlon swimming, I think the most important thing is to be as efficient as possible, so you exit the water feeling refreshed, not exhausted. If I pick up my cadence too much, I can gain time, but how much energy will it cost me? From a purely #'s standpoint, I personally can swim a 1:30 per 100 yard pace vs. a 1:45 per 100 yard pace. My cadence on the 1:30 per 100 yards will be much faster than the 1:45 per 100 yards and there will be almost no "gliding". However, in a 2.4 mile race - 1:30 per 100 yards equals a finishing time of about a 1 hr 4 mins and a 1:45 per 100 yards equals about 1 hr 13 mins. I will be much more exhausted swimming the 1:04 vs the 1:13, so I choose to save the the energy for the bike. Not to mention that race day adrenaline kicks in on the swim, and even though I'm shooting for a 1:13 - I will probably swim a 1:08 ish. (Swam 1:02 last year, but I think that course was a bit short) Hope that info helps, and makes sense. Jo: Excellent Catch about the right arm entry. It is noticeably higher than the left hand and the "catch" phase starts a bit earlier. I will also clench my but cheeks and tighten my core. I've never done that drill - but I will try. Should be fun. Amazing to me how enlightening a slow motion video and some frame by frame shots can be. I consider myself to be an excellent swimmer, but I saw this video and went "oh chit!" Thanks to all of you that chimed in, and I hope that this was helpful "homework". |

Received mail from my utility company advising me of high water consumption during the last meter reading. I consumed 20kgallons. That's way, way, way higher than normal. Checking out my on- line bill, it appears to be my irrigation system. There are no leaks that I can see, so I had to call The Leak Doctor. Of course, since I got this information Friday evening, the Doctor won't be out until Monday. I think I hear my money seeping into the aquifer. To put the cherry on top, just checking for a leak is 300$! Can't wait to see what the repair bill is. Ugh. btw, this is one of those PITA things that come with home ownership. Sometimes, apartment life doesn't seem so bad.Rant off. |

Spent the day at the pool at the Paragames in Bali scouting for triathlete candidates ... and with the guy who's the Michael Phelps of the Paralympics. Frankly I should say Michael Phelps is the Kingsley Bugarin of the Olympics! Kingsley did it first and better. Kingsley is a TOTAL PIGLET and for whatever completely incomprehensible reason, he seems to adore me too. Okay, it's probably because he's blind, so it just means I have a super winning personality. Five Paralympics, a shovelful of medals (including golds), and now he's breaking records in open water swimming JOJO and STACE FACE he's done Rottie 4x and plans to do it every year 'til he's 80 or just can't. (That's a famous open water swim in our part of the world--18km off Western Australia). Also considering double crossings. WONDERMOOSE his middle name is Haldane ... as in related to JBS Haldane. So he's high on the geek gene scale too. Here's a pic of us together. I'll get a better one of me showing the new fitness (and more skin), but if you look at this next to the avatar one (might post them side by side) there are 3 major differences: 1) now you can see my ribcage; 2) there's a skinfold instead of an inflated spare tyre midway--doesn't look great but it'll sort out; 3) no lower belly over the undies. Oh and 4) if you look REALLY close you CAN see the obliques on the side that I first thought were stretch marks or something weird!

In my defense, I did say owning a home was sometimes a PITA. I think by saying that I jinxed myself.
