198.2. Up a tiny bit. Who knew that sitting on the couch, watching basketball and eating nachos would have consequences. Smile

Hey everyone - I know everyone is working hard on their weight loss but that challenge is winding down. In the meantime lets do a little tri- training roll call to get this thread moving again. Who you are - what's your next goal or challenge (long run or whatever). When you post your update give positive feedback to those who go before you if you can.

So - I'm Amy and my next challenge is my 90 mile ride Saturday!

Wow Amy!  I can't fathom a 90-mile bike ride without there being a reward at the end like a medal!!!!  Yes, I'm one of those people.....I do it for the bling :-)

I joined a great group of ladies in North Carolina called the "Tri-it-for-Life" helping women of all ages, sizes, colors, experience complete a spint tri.  We do group runs, rides and swims.  Makes a world of difference over doing it solo.

I'm currently training for the Florida Rocketman at Cape Canaveral on May 5th.

Waiting for Spring to arrive in North Carolina,

Martha Centeno

Oh great! I'm glad you are doing Rocketman. it is such a cool location. There is a rumor going around that because of logistic challenges this race will only happen once so plan to enjoy the whole thing!

This is david. Hitting up several benefit 5k runs soon. Nothing big as my wife and I are expecting a little boy in the next few weeks. Trying to trim time down to 21 mins

A 21 minute 5k is pretty awesome. I bet you're working hard on that. But I admit I think a new baby boy is even more exciting than a pr :-)

I have a 10 mile run tomorrow. My first time ever in double digits. I've got 5 weeks until my half marathon. Then about 5 weeks after that is the first tri I'm targeting. But I still need to get my swimming in better shape. The local tri club starts outdoor group swims in May, so that should help.

Have a great, healthy weekend, everyone!

Double digits! That's big time distance - congratulations. Sounds like you're getting good and ready for the half-marathon.

Is it still cold where you are? We're having a slow start to spring here. Last year at this time I was doing lots of open eater swimming without a wetsuit. Today Imhave an open water swim and not only will I be wearing a suit we postponed it till lunchtime because its so chilly out. Put in your pool time and a few open water swims (2-3) before the race should be plenty to get you ready.

Question to this great group.....

Given that it appears Spring is taking it's time this year in arriving, how ridiculous is to swim in a pool with a wetsuit?  I've got the sprint tri in early May and have never swam in a wetsuit.  A secondary question, if I should go in the pool with a wetsuit, what do I need to do for the caring of it after being in chlorine?

This is all new to me ...

I swam in my wetsuit for practice before my first wetsuit swim. While you don't want to do it all the time I think once or twice won't kill it. Make sure to rinse it really well in the shower after your swim.

It is still cold here in Ohio. It's supposed to get up to 55 tomorrow, but my run is at 8AM. I'll probably still be in a jacket and hat.

I've worn a wet suit in the pool before to practice. I felt a little ridiculous, but then I decided to put on a brave, tough face - I'm a triathlete and I'm super bad (that should sound like James Brown)! I suggest putting it on in the locker room, rather than pool side. It takes me a long time, with lots of weird poses to get it on. I'd rather do that with as few people as possible watching. Then I rinsed the heck out of it in the shower.

10 miles complete! And I feel it. Didn't really feel rough after last week's 9. But I've had some hip and low back pain this week. And after running, my feet hurt too. They took a pounding. I wish I had a bath tub. Frown

Congrats!

After long runs I do think I've baths help but they aren't really fun. I'm also a believer in compression socks for recovery. And massage :-)

10 miles is a big deal! I still remember that the first time I ran 7 miles I was astonished. Then a few weeks later with 10 miles I was flabbergasted. Now a 10 mile run is a staple workout. Be very proud of yourself!

This is weird! When trying to get on the site all week it said it was down for maintenance but it looks like you guys have been posting, very weird.

Way to go to our fearless leader on her 70.3. under 6 hours - very impressive!

Just ran a light 5k today with the whole family for a great cause. Its called Feed The Need and you pay either $20 or 25 cans of food which goes to local food pantries. It is very cool to see all the food piled up. BTW my 10 year old boy came in 2nd in his age group (note: he was way in front of me).

My next big race is my first Half Marathon on May 26th and my first Sprint Tri on July 28th. I am trying to get my miles back up to where they were before my injury.

Very proud of myself though, instead of getting in the car and riding home with the family after finishing the 5k, I ran an extra 5 miles back home to get some mileage in.

I will try and stay away from the candy in the kid's Easter baskets this weekend.

If you celebrate have a nice holiday.

Staying away from the Easter candy - that's the hardest challenge of all Surprised Good luck with that. Congrats on the 5k with the family. I love doing that. We used to have a Feed the Hungry run 5k here but it fizzled out. If I was more motivated I'd re-organize it myself.

So here's my update. My 90 mile ride actually worked out to be 85 but I'm okay with that. We started super early 3 of us with lights on and rode 2 hours in the dark. I've never done that before - it's a little creepy. Then we met up with the rest of our group and headed back out for 3 hours which actually turned into 4 and since I had a deadline time to be home I actually rode straight home which is why I was 5 miles short ... nonetheless a successful ride. My caboose is pretty sore because I was riding a new bike and new adamo saddle. I'm not sure I love it yet. Amazingly I was awake all day until 9 pm when I fell asleep like a rock. My husband even says I had a whole conversation with him that I don't remember - so I was really out like a light. Ha!

Then today I had a 1 hour 40 minute run. HR1 which means slow. I'll tell you these long runs the day after a long ride are hard. It's like my feet are stuck in mud. But I figure it's good practice for race day.

Spring (which is like summer here) seems to have arrived here in Miami. We'll be up to 81 today. So I hope spring makes it to where you are soon if it's still chilly.

Next week I'll be racing Nautica here on South Beach. It's one of my favorite triathlons. We swim in the ocean on South Beach at sunrise. Of course the weather forecast is for rain. The forecast is always for rain when I'm racing.

Happy Easter to all who celebrate and here's to a good week of training!

Mamma, that is some awesome training!!!

BTW - Tomorrow is the last day for Mamma's Portly Triathlete challenge and the quest for the coveted Black Dog Mug. I guess I should have checked the calendar, oops! Hopefully it will keep me somewhat in line today.

Good luck everyone!

John,

Checking in only down 1 more pound.

Congrats to all on the long bike, runs, and swimming in wet suit again.

My next (and 1st race) of the season is my 1/2 mary May 4th. The Wisconsin Marathon also known as the cheesiest marathon. It will be my first 1/2 and is one of my personal stepping stones towards convincing myself I'll be OK for half-iron come July. I'm still a slow triathlete. The past month I've been building on my long run for the 1/2 mary. I've progressed from 5 to 8 to 10 miles for my saturday long runs per the plan I'm following. This week is 3 on Mon, 5, on Wednesday, and 11 miles for the long run on Saturday, the next week adds 1 mile to each distance for the same day of the week with a long run of 12 on Saturday, then I'm heading into taper for the half marathon.

A question I have for Amy or any who might know what is best for me to do. During my run training I've been run Mon, Wed, long run Sat. and my half mary plan says to run on Thur also. But to keep my multi-sport effort together Tue and Thur have been cycling nights. I swim on Mon and Thur. So the question is.....

Should I stop cycling in my run taper for the 1/2 mary?

Those who TRI do, those who don't may never know Smile

It's a good question about subbing the bike for the run. I think in the end it's up to you because you do get cross-over aerobic training from the biking.

So my opinion would be that I think you can definitely sub a recovery run for a bike ride but if it's a tempo run or another more specific run workout I think you should stick with the run. One other thing to consider is that if you are feeling sort of beaten up from the higher mileage then biking might help you avoid an overuse injury.
