Hey all...I copied this post that I put on the "Triathlon Talk" board...figured I need my IMKY peeps to weigh in and give some love...or tough love...who knows...:

Hey all...I'm freaking out!  I just got back from a weeklong vacation on Sat.  During my vacation, despite my best efforts, I wasn't able to stick to my training plan.  I ran every other day (or nearly every other day) and was feeling alright.  Didn't get too crazy with alcohol or food, just recharged and had a great time in general.  When I got back I felt like I was ready to get back on my training plan (I'm training for my 1st IM in my 2nd season of tri, following a plan put together by a local coach) and really hammer down.  Yesterday was a typical Mon. recovery (1 hour total: 30 min. swim/30 min. run) and I felt decent.  Today I was supposed to be on a hilly bike for 1:30 in HR Zones 2-4 and then lift weights.  I crapped out after only 30 minutes on the bike!!!! I don't know what it was, I just didn't feel motivated to keep going.

My first TT is at the end of the month and two weeks after that is my first marathon!  I feel like I should have been completely motivated and recharged this week and yet I just couldn't keep going today...my head just wasn't in it.  Work has been crazy the last couple of days playing catch up and I don't know if that part of it....?  Has anyone else had a similar experience?  I know I'll bounce back in a day or two but I just feel like absolute crap...ah help!!

Stress can really kill a workout!  Do not worry about it, I think you'll be fine.  During my IM training last year, there were days when the thought of even getting on my bike could force me to break into tears!!  Some days you can push through the training, other days....well sometimes, it's better to just take a break or shorten the workout.  The key is just learning when you really need to rest or when to suck it up.  ON some of those "suck it up days" I wind up having some of my best workouts!

Thanks Abbie.  I definitely DO agree that sometimes when I "muscle" through a workout that I might not want to do I feel super satisfied...just couldn't do it this time.  BUT, it always helps to hear/read some words of encouragement!

jboeve,

Breathe. .. We ALL have bad days.  Last week I did an hour time trial and my heart rate was through the roof, but my mph was very slow. . . I couldn't figure it out.  But then Saturday I cranked out a long bike and raced in the afternoon.  And I felt great.

You are fine. . . don't worry about it, just get back to the plan.  Go read some race reports from LVille 2008, that always helps to get me pumped again.  It is a long season and we need to help each other out the best we can.

Take care, I know you will be fine.

A quick question. I have had some need pain on the outside for a little while which is pretty common for me at the beginning of the year. It usually clears up once I get off the treadmill and run outside more often. But now I have pain in my hip. I am pretty sure it is IT band and I have started yoga to try and stretch it out. What do you guys think I should do. Should I take some time off or should I keep going but do more stretching. I hate to have this happen so early in the program.

I don't have much experience with IT stuff, but a foam-roller is amazing!

I would not stop training unless you physically can't stand the pain. The yoga should help. As Abbie said the foam roller works great! You may also want to try the stick to aggressively work some of the muscles in your legs. When possible I would suggest RICE (rest, ice, compression, and elevation to reduce pain and inflammation, followed by the foam roller and/or the stick to loosen the IT (note I said loosen because the IT band is not really a muscle and can't be stretched like other muscles in our body) Keep in mind that the treatment (foam roller and the stick) itself can be very painful.

I tried the foam roller last night before I swam and it did help. Today it feels pretty good. I am going to try to get refit on my bike to ensure it is right. I do get some knee pain when riding on the trainer. So that might have transfered to the hip. Is it possible that the locked position on the trainer might cause problems because it does not allow me to rock normally?

I wouldn't take "time off" but I would focus more energy on biking and swimming, while cutting back on the running to try and rest it a little more.  So if you were running 20 miles a week, cut that back to 12 or so, but up your swimming and biking and see if that helps. . .

What pedals are you using? SpeedPlay (esp. the X series) will give you way more float than any other pedal on the market and may alleviate your knee pain.

I am using speed play zeros. That is why I bought them. I thought the float would help.

Great! Just make sure you have them adjusted to give you the float you need.

My dog did that with nearly all of my pool accoutrements. Since then, I've been using goggles and swim cap only ... oh wait, a swimsuit too and funny my swim hasn't hurt one bit.

jboeve - 2009-03-13 8:30 AM Happy Friday all!  Hope that workouts/training are going well.  I had my best workout since pre-vacation (almost 2 weeks ago now) last night!  Was on the bike with the IM 25th Anniversary DVD on the tv...what great motivation!

congrats, happy to hear you have gotten back into the groove. IM 25th anniversary ws 2003 right? I have all of them but 2002, 2003, 2004 but I want to get them asap. You can watch 2002 and 2004 online at UniversalSports.com. Happy training

Yeah it's 2003.  It's the best because there's almost 45 minutes prior to the actual race coverage where they talk about some of the "recognizable" IM stories...Dick and Ricky Hoyt, Marc Herremans, etc. etc.

I just recently purchased the entire IM DVD collection and it was totally worth it.  The best part about it is that it gives you some extra motivation on those days when you really need it.
