As far a training goes- I like training with baggy shorts for the extra drag. I usually wear a couple pair of drag shorts when I swim- it makes me work a little harder. On race day I think it pays off.

Boy you're not kidding about working harder!  The only reason I have been swimming in the "drag shorts" is that I am trying to spread out all the purchases I had to make for this Ironman.  I am a distance runner and with this being my first triathlon I don't have any of the gear.  My wife has been real supportive but I figured by spreading out all the purchases maybe I wouldn't give her a heart attack.  Maybe, just maybe she'll even let me do another one  My brother and I are already talking a possible head to head competition next year in Florida or Wisconsin.

It's easier to get the permission to do the second one. Hey Honey....I already bought all this stuff...might as well use it!

Is there a "normal" wind pattern on the bike course? I ride routes on the coast that are typically the same- head wind out, tail wind back etc., Today was not typical in that there was a head/cross wind the entire way.

How many portapotties are on the bike course? And how far apart? Today was also the first time I even considered practicing peeing on the bike.  I still don't know if that is something I'm willling to do or not.

10 mile run followed by 1 hour swim today.  Finally broke down, went to the bike shop, and bought a new saddle.  I am borrowing my brothers bike for this race which is a nice Felt road bike adapted for tri.  The seat is the factory spec and has been giving me issues.  I am good thru about 60-80 miles and then I, for lack of a better term, rub myself raw.  I end up walking like a cowboy for 48 hours after each century.  I am already using great bike shorts and try to lube up so I figured I needed to pony up some dough.  I am first going to try a Velo? triathlon bike seat which has been measured to fit my tail bone and has that extra padding up front.  We will see how it goes.  I just need to figure out how to go over a 100 hundred miles without tearing my skin off or it is going to make for a long marathon.

Anyways, I just thought that I would point out that we will be hearing that cannon go off in 9 WEEKS-6 DAYS-11 HOURS if I am doing my math right.  That's right folks we have entered the single digits!!!!  Well at least on the weekly count

I hear ya. I have a FELT B2 and first thing I did was get rid of that Felt seat...ouch that thing wasn't comortable at all. I am impressed you could use it for 70 - 80 miles.

Did 105 miles today with a 5 mile Brick run.

Did a 10 mile run followed by a swim yesterday. 30 mile bike speed workout this morning. Went with a light workout today because I will be starting my vacation late tomorrow and will be doing intense workouts in Panama City Beach from Wednesday to Monday. I can't think of a better way to celebrate my 46th birthday. Hope everyone's training is going well .

As far as the question about the weather, I have been two the last 3 Ironman Florida races. 2006 was very cold that year. Race start saw temps in the lower 40's. 2007 was absolutely beautiful with slightly windy conditions but temps in the comfortable upper 50's to lower 60's rising to the upper 70's. 2008 was GORGEOUS..with calm seas, light wind and low to mid 70's. A slight chill in the air at race start. You definitely need a lightweight long sleeve on the run if you were running in the evening.

Hope that helps!!!

Woohoo! Another training weekend down.  I did the Hotter 'N Hell Hundred yesterday in Wichita Falls, TX.  Most thankfully it didn't live up to it's name and it was one of the most beautiful days for cycling yet!! I had a great ride. Today was just a 2000m straight swim and an 11 mile run. Felt super on all of it, okay, maybe not super during the run, but I've been learning and practicing some mental training tricks and seriously folks, they work.  Find those "cues" those things that motivate you, know those feelings that you love when you're having a good day, and tap into them when you're not feeling so hot. They totally help out.

Anyhow, another week down and we're into the 9 weeks till race day! Yipee!! I get to race a week from tomorrow and am pumped about it.  Won't really taper for it ("just" an Oly) but will still be a fun day!

Train safe!

I am feeling much better that I got a longer ride accomplished this weekend. I felt very good and if the Ironman was on Saturday I believe i would have fared pretty well.

Today is a self imposed day off which i feel is just as important as the long ride.

2008 was pretty chilly in the morning.  Around 45 degrees.  Not bad in a wetsuit but that sand is cold!  Plan on wearing some old socks down to the beach.  It makes a big differnce while you wait.

Thanks!  I'm doing the Austin Olympic. I wonder what an 80 mile ride/3 mile brick and an 18 mile run 3 and 4 days out from an Oly will do to it? We shall find out!

And to whomever asked "are you always tired." yes. That is me. Is it November yet?

So with only two months of training left, give or take depending on you're taper, I have a question for all you experienced Ironmen.  Do you find that you gain much speed in the last two months of your training or is it more solidifying your current pace?  It's doesn't really matter either way but I was curious with this last ramp up in training if I might be able to squeak out a little more speed or if it is all about endurance at this point.

On a side note I had kind of an exciting day.  I bought my wetsuit and trisuit for the race.  I had never tried on a triathlon wetsuit before.  Man was that a weird experience.  Definitely a different feel then the wetsuits I am used to.  I went in with some opinions as to what I was going to get due to things I have read and what I have seen online.  Boy am I glad I tried them all on.  The last one I tried was the one I thought I was least likely to get, the Zoot Fuzion full length.  I was originally looking at Blue Seventy and 2XU's but after trying them on The Zoot fit me literally like a second skin.  The others seemed great but this one felt like it was made for my body.  Hopefully the technology is close enough that I am not giving away time on the swim compared to any competitors.  Underneath I will be sporting a black 2XU elite 1 piece tri suit.  I decided to go with a light weight tri-suit and just throw a pair of bike shorts on top for the bike leg since I have a lot of trouble with my butt on the bike.  I figured throwing on the bike shorts will take may an extra five seconds but might save me some serious agony latter on.  Had to go with the one piece black because I am not quite as thin as some of you hardcore Ironmen!!  Working on it though.

Happy Tuesday.

I am glad to hear I am not the only one who is feeling tired. Ya'll sound good out there tho'! Just a little FYI in the event you have never tried it...when I am really tired, drinking an Ensure right before the workout really helps. Doesn't matter which sport, but that shot of carbs is awesome! I'll be using it before IMFL, but not on the route. It seems to heavy for me once I've got my sweat on. Hang in everyone!

60 mile bike/6mile run brick.  Fastest pace ever.  AWESOME!!!

I love it when a plan comes together.  Especially since I had a few too many beers last night and felt like crap this morning.  It is amazing how endorphins can fix just about anything.

Anybody got any plans for next year?  Despite the lack of available credit in my account I plan to sign up for IMWI 2010.  My brother and I are going to have a little head to head racing next year.  It will be a nice location since all of our family still lives in Chicago.

Happy Wednesday.  65 days and change!

300 days...that explains the fatigue...haha! While I may not have hit IM specific training till about June, it was always in the back of my mind (okay, the FRONT) in all the workouts I did after that. I'm excited though.  I hope to remember I'm excited when I'm running 18 miles at the butt crack of dawn on Friday when the rest of my friends here are in bed sleeping cause it's a Friday "Training Holiday" (Army term)--yeah, it's a training holiday alright, a holiday to train! But, I am getting a massage later that day, so that'll be some good motivation.

Seriously, I hope everyone is doing well.  It seems, from following so many friends through IM, etc. that this is the time where you really gotta stick to it.  We're into the big workouts, the final tweeking of nutrition, the HIM test races, and probably not enough sleep.  Be safe, eat healthy to avoid sickness as much as possible, and don't get caught up in what others are doing and go out and overdue what you are able to do! I want to see all you BT peeps on race day not only have a great race, but most importantly cross that finish line.  Then on 8 Nov maybe we can all hobble somewhere for a celebration toast!

Thanks Brittany for the encouragment. Some days it feels like I'm in the drudgery phase of IM training.

My husband, family and dogs have really helped a lot the last few weeks. Thank goodness the dogs are now trained to get up at 4:30 a.m. Makes it easier to get going those days that I want to sleep in.

I've got a race (sprint) on Sunday without a taper. It will be interesting to see how it goes with a long training day on Saturday.

dido on the tiredness! I was in such a funk yesterday, when i went to the hairdresser I had her do something different for the first time in forever. Well, now I am a brunette. WTF!! It looks pretty bad. I was just so disgusted with myself. I am up a few pounds, my hair looked like dried out straw from all the swimming, and i was so guilty for missing my swim. I will make it up today because today was a rest day anyway. Gotta get it together!

I had an easy 2 hour ride yesterday that I skipped...I woke up with Vertigo and feeling like I was coming down with a cold...got a massage, ran some errands, got a shower and watched a movie on the couch with my daughter where I fell asleep...This morning I have a bit of a cold - stuffy nose and headache, but feel like I can get in a workout, followed by a nap.  It's all part of the journey!!!  Tongue out  Looking forward to a 6 hour ride on Saturday.  Have a great day all!
