so the wetsuit choking thing...i had the SAME issue, in fact, i came in DEAD LAST in a tri i did last spring (a really dark moment for me) BECAUSE i had a panic attack in the water, because i felt like i was choking.
sparco/sal sent me a video on youtube i think about putting on your wetsuit right, because if you have a wetsuit that ISN'T too small, it should NOT choke you at all. so i watched this vid, i put on my wetsuit, voila, i love my wetsuit now!! i can't remember what the vid was called, it was just some guy putting on a wetsuit, and i'm TERRIBLE at finding stuff on youtube, but either look for it, or ask sal where it is, it was a HUGE relief to me to NOT be gagging and sputtering in the water-
the tri where i was choking, the swim was 250 meters took me 23 minutes, the VERY next race the swim was 800 meters, took me about the same amount of time. LOL

yesterday, dh DID whisk me off. but not for anything so great as DINNER! LOL
we're having really bad flooding in our area right now, and there are two major rivers between us and "town" AND the other night when he was coming home from work he was having car problems, so he up and decided that we needed to get the car in to the shop as soon as possible, or we were going to be cut off.

he thinks like a guy, what can i say?

anyway, i have a new alternator and i have to go pick up my car this morning. i would have MUCH rather spent that money on new pedals and shoes. oh well.

You DON'T user your Garmin?  What's wrong with you?   I can't live without mine.  When my suitcase didn't make it back here with me after Christmas, I was going through Garmin withdrawal.

Actually, I was wondering what tools and gadgets people find helpful.  I can tell a lot about how I am doing by following my heart rate, but it's taken me awhile to figure out what is good and bad for me.  I also have that gadget to record my cadence on my bike, but I haven't found that to be as helpful.  And of course I love knowing my running pace as I'm running, instead of waiting until I get home and calculating it.

I'm an absolute data junkie, although I don't necessarily know how to use all the data I'm capable of collecting. Love my Garmin Forerunner 305. I also have the cadence unit.

How do people use their HR monitoring and data? I usually run by pace/effort or ride by speed/effort and then look at HR after the fact. I then compare the HR data with my perceived effort to look for trends. I read that a lot of people will slow their running, etc, because they are exceeding the HR they think they should be at. Unless you've got a medical condition that requires limiting your exertion, why would someone limit themself this way? What's the advantage?

I slow down my running pace for my LSD runs only, and monitoring my HR helps me do that, although with the Garmin all I have to do is look at the actual pace .  Other than that case, I usually don't adjust my pace -- instead, I use it to understand why I'm feeling the way I am.  Does that make sense?

OK Nicole ~ where is the bullet with ipod? I could not run...or I could but I would not have half the fun without mine! and used to use the Garmin all the time but I lost mine and got this one from someone and it is not like my old one and I was having issues with it and just did not have time to mess with it...I guess it is time to make time! no better time then the present...but not today, too busy.

AndriaLL - 2009-01-07 4:37 PM

I have a two piece wetsuit.  I love the bottoms, hate the top.  I feel like I'm choking and it's so tight in the chest I feel like I can't breathe.  It fits like it is "supposed to", though, as I was measured for it, tried it on in the store with the owner checking everything, etc.  I've been storing it with two basketballs in the chest area   (A big no-no by the way, but I hate hating it so much) Hoping it stretches a little.

Come on Andria, basketballs? Now you're just braggin.:-

I love my wetsuit. It's an Xterra Vortex full that I got on clearance last January for about $200. It's made a big difference in my open water swimming. Also it's nice to know that I won't drown with it on. In Minnesota, it gives me another month in the water.

I lost my Garmin last summer and made myself go without for a while as punishment, but I'm back in Garmin-land. I love the GPS and will run or ride the same route to see if I'm improving. I had a 205 (no HR monitor), but replaced it with the 305, so I'm just starting on the whole HR thing.

I don't usually slow my pace, but take my walk breaks when my "HR too high!" alert goes off, sometimes on a hill, sometimes just getting in the zone & feeling good. There's a faction in exercise physiology that says long, slow exercise (Z2/Z3) both burns more fat and contributes more to cardiovascular endurance. There's not a lot of scientific evidence, but what there is tends to support these hypotheses, so I go long & slow for my base period and ALL long runs/rides, then change out my shorter workouts for speed & strength work during build and maintenance periods later in the season. It's important to note, though, that either perceived effort or actual HR data will work to figure out what's 'slow'.

Imagining a wetsuit thrown into a closet with two basketballs stuffed in it...CRACKS ME UP! I cant stop chuckling.  I love it!

So I am going to sign up for my tri tonight everyone! Im so sick to my stomach!  I need help though. It doesnt look like Im on a timeline as my BF will be back from Saudi!! BUT I am stuck between the two.  The Appleman is in July(about 500ppl in last years race) and the Cranberry is in August (600 ppl).  I asked on the Massachusetts forum board and someone mentioned that the Cranberry is organized by top promoters and that the Appleman has a completely different race vibe.

I had no idea that there could be different vibes from races......

Monica,

There are definitely different vibes! Strange that the Cranberry is more organized because they have no sponsors, while Appleman has tons. The Cranberry also has a USAT race director, if you care. Maybe Appleman is run by corporate folks rather than triathlon folks, which makes for a very different atmosphere. I don't know what to advise, really, but I think I'd go with the triathlon folks at Cranberry, even though I really like the Littleton course. Good luck and savor that first-time feeling, it's the only time you'll get it!

Trish

LOL!! you name it julee!! i look at them longingly all the time at the store, but can't ever seem to plunk down the cash.

as far as other gagets, i've only RECENTLY aquired an ipod, but what a HUGE difference it makes!!! i can't imagine running without it EVER again!

other than that, i have no gagets. i really would like to get a garmin, mostly for the speed/distance thing, i would really like to know what i'm doing as i'm doing it instead of after, especially since i'm TRYING to do this marathon thing, and i don't live near a track, it would help with intervals, blah blah blah. all that stuff. i would really like pedals and shoes for my bike, and i'd LOVE some aerobars, ooh, and a bike computer, that'd be good. i NEEEED some new running shoes, mine have about 500 miles on them, and they're toast.

pretty much, i have a wetsuit, a bike, and an ipod, that's about it. LOL still aquiring the rest.
oh, and i have a new alternator in the dang car. grrr.

actually, come to think of it, i've done three races with minimal gear, and i've made out pretty well, that says something for the sport, eh? LOL

Thanks Trish...you were right the Cranberry Tri is a USAT sanctioned event-so I guess I will need to be a member on race day. Or the website also stated that I can get a "day pass" at sign in. No clue how much those run..but I am about to find out!

when i did a usat, the day passes were $10
