morrisel - 2010-01-27 7:50 PM So I need some advice. Today I did my run/walk of 9min run, 21 min walk. I have had a stress fracture in the past and today while I was running, I could feel a twinge in that leg. Anyone have any advice? I'd really like to keep training, but am really scared of breaking it again.

So, I've also had a stress fracture in my tibia that took a long time to heal.  It did twinge (and still does occasionally) when I run on it.  But, it doesn't last and doesn't feel like it did when it was fractured.  If it feels like that at all, check it checked out right away and stop running.  The sooner you catch it, the faster it will heal.

Are you running outside or on the treadmill?  You could try a couple of treadmill runs to see how it does since it is lower impact.

I had stress fractures in both tibia's back in high school.  I have to very very slowly increase my running workouts otherwise I have issues.  If I feel twinges I ease up a bit and then make sure to take the next day off of running.

I just signed up for a week long bike tour of the Erie Canal from Buffalo back to Albany, NY.  They average about 50 miles/day and camp out at night.  It sounds like a lot of fun and plenty interesting.  Very excited!

That sounds so cool - when does that take place?

Jenna

It's in the middle of July.  Sounds like some of the camping sites are next to lakes or have pools; I think around 500 people do it each year.  They carry all the bags...so all you have to do it ride your bike from one site to the next.  They recommend a hybrid, which I have, but I'll have to make sure to pick up repair kits.  It shoudl definately be an adventure!

It's so nice to have them carrying your gear!  That makes it way easier.  Definitely carry a repair kit and food (and maybe a jacket depending on the weather).

Ok I have a question for the group and want your opinions.  Thursday is a scheduled rest day for me.  I use it as a day that I do nothing at all as far as training.  I am thinking of switching it to an easy day and alternate running one week and biking the next week.  I would make it an easy spinning day when biking and a very easy paced jog when it is the running week.  What does everyone think?

I usually use my off day (today also) as a weightlifting day. I've noticed that it helps my endurance and stability a lot when I'm training and helps prevent injury. If you're already biking or running every other day, it would definitely be a good alternate for your body. That is, if you have access to weights.

Thank you for the advice. I have noticed that it doesn't hurt the next day after the twinge, and I never run days back to back so that probably helps too. And I had my stress fracture in my tibia as well. I'm just wary because the last time I broke it I was put in a hard cast for 3 months and don't want that to happen again!

I think it would probably be ok.  But, if you notice yourself starting to get really tired, take it as a rest day instead of an easy training day.  We do need rest, so it's important to give it to your body when you need it.

I completely understand!  I was in a cast for 2 months in the middle of the summer.  It was miserable and I don't want to ever have to do that again.

Yoga, or something similar, is great for a "rest" day. Rest is even better

Can you believe it's the end of January already?!  How did your month go?  Did you accomplish everything you wanted?

If so, great job!!  If not, remember that tomorrow is the start of a new month and you can always start fresh then.

What are your February goals?

Time flies!  I was peachy all month, so proud of that...I don't remember what all my goals were and am too lazy to go back through the tread...I know the main one I was concerned with was 4 pool laps nonstop.  I have not achieved that - however, I am SO much improved in the pool that it doesn't bother me that I didn't achieve that goal.  I've moved from the beginner lane in my tri group to the intermediate, and am keeping up with them.  I have my first triathlon on 02/14 - a short indoor of 15 minutes for each discipline.  I'm just continuing to work up to 15 minutes of minimal stopping, and it's going pretty well.

For February I am just going to keep swimming, and need to increase my biking.  I've got a 1/2 marathon in March and am trying to increase mileage for a marathon in June...so just keep at it!

Hope everyone else had a good month - I know a lot of people in our group had their own problems, and hope February is a better month!

January was pretty good.  I got all my scheduled running in.  I would have liked to get more other workouts in.

For February, I started an exercise challenge with a group of friends.  We each put in $5.  All you have to do is do some sort of exercise for 30 each day.  Whoever has the most days at the end of 2010 wins the pot.

I'm also debating an indoor tri at the gym at the end of the month and a sprint in April.  Will probably skip the indoor one since I haven't got back in the pool yet.

Trying to figure out the reason for my severe stomach issues on my long runs - anything over 6 and I have awful stomach problems.  Anyone have this problem or have any advise or suggestions?

Didn't quite accompish everything I wanted to in Jan - but eventually got into the pool and got my 2 or more swim workout in per week and at least started some running.

Have big plans in place to make sure I DO get the running and swimming done in Feb. by making sure I have a place to run, and even new runners as I think the old ones were starting to get worn out - so hopefully will help to keep the back happy!

I like the way everyones "peachy" January's looked so my goal is I'm hoping to get in a Peachy Feb!

January was pretty good, although I would have loved some more outdoor biking (however, did sneak in 2 bike commutes).

For February I've got a swimming goal as part of the "February Love Challenge" (that I'm running...still time to join the fun!)  Also trying to increase the running without reinjuring my Achilles. Today, after a walking warm up I ran the rest of the distance without any walk breaks. This is absolutely the longest I've run since July! Iced the heel afterward and I'll do a day or two of ibuprofen for good measure.

Not bad - I didn't get everything 100%, but I got a good start on swimming, which was my biggest worry for the race, and am working out regularly and joined a gym, so me and January are cool.

Karen - that exercise challenge for a pot of money is genius, I'm going to have to find some friends to do that with!

My February goals,

  1. Keep swimming 3x/week, try to get my average lap time down, and be able to consistently do a 45 second lap (one length, my current average is 60 seconds - I'm an aqua-snail...or a turtle?). I have no idea if that time is achievable, but I want to get a little faster this month.
  2. Get to the gym 4-6 days/week, and finally tr(i)y a Spinning class, anxiety be damned.
  3. Make an appointment with the personal trainer to set up a kick butt workout routine for the next 2 months (I'm buying a package of 3 for $99 to stagger over the rest of the year). I don't need someone to work out with me, but I could use help setting up a challenging plan so I don't stroll my way through workouts.
That should do it...February, be nice to me...

I had a great January.  The only thing I wasnt in the pool as much as I wanted to be.  I am slowly building my base up.  I am sticking to the 10% rule.  I have been feeling great.  My knees are doing great.  They are a little stiff in the morning when I get up.  But it does not last long at all.
February goals:
1)  Continue to increase my base each week.
2)  Get in the pool more often.  At least 2x a week.
