On a more serious note I need to pick a training plan for 2010.  I am thinking I should train with a 20 week HIM plan, even though I will only do some olympic and sprints races.  Does that sound ok to you experts?  Yes, I'll have a bike by the time I start.

That plan will be good for your fitness, what you may have to look at more closely is where your races fall in the 20 weeks or will an Olympic be the peak race at the end of the 20 weeks.  The HIM plan may be geared more towards endurance, rather than an Olympic plan that may place more emphasis on speed (being a shorter race of course).

IMO, you can use the plan as a strong foundation and tailor as needed.  This is where evondo can offer up some good pointers, as I am not as versed in training plan development.  I am currently reading/studying and trying to develop one for myself that will meet my schedule, my goals and my current abilities... it's a tough balancing act!  Cookie cutter plans are not a bad place to start, but the tweaks for individuality is often needed.

HIM and olympic training are very similar but the long bike/run should be different.  For the olympic long bike only need ~30-50mi and long run of 8-12mi. The range is really big because it really depends on your goals for the race and your current base fitness.  Olympic training plan might also have more speed work in it than a beginner HIM plan would.

You should be able to modify the HIM to meet your needs but I'm sure a 20wk olympic plan would work as well.  If the olympic plan contains more speed/threshold focus rather than just endurance like the HIM plan will, I'd pick the olympic plan personally as a starting point...

I try to weight train at least 2-3x per week, full body circuit, and typically with a trainer.  In the interest of full disclosure, it has nothing to do with tri-performance and more to do with how I like my body to look asthetically.

I've taken a few weeks of from working with my trainer and am not loving my arms or abs at all right now, so I'm back in full force with that after the holidays.  My TL usually has some interesting remarks about whatever strange torture mechanisms that she (who I refer to as Atilla the Hun) makes me do, so feel free to peruse for strenth training ideas.

bzgl40 - 2009-12-23 10:24 AM Weight training, yah or nay?  I think I found the right group for sure for motivation, seems like a fair amount of you lift weights of some form or other.  Seems to be fairly split on if weight lifting improves performance or not, prevents injury or not, and whatever else.  I am a fan of weights cause I find I just like the look of being toned vs just skinny.  I also feel that it helps me injury wise.  I noticed more aches and pains, especially in the knee area, if I do not lift.  I find that it balances out some of the muscle imbalances that just happen.

Wondering what motivates others to lift or why folks feel they need not lift?  Even with or without weights.  Even if your just using your own body weight to me that is still lifting.  You can still get a very good muscle workout that way.

One thing I know I need to concentrate on more is my core.  I do it from time to time and I can tell when I am consistent with it.  And then for some reason I get lazy on it and all hell breaks lose (literally and figuratively).

I'm on a weight training kick now because I just re-enabled my month to month gym membership. I enjoy lifting and I'm hoping to build core strength in the off season. I normally have a gym membership from Nov-Feb so I can use the weights and treadmill (if it's really crappy out). It seemed to help out last year, I'm hoping to build off that. During regular season training I'll do some core work after a run 2x per week with just bodyweight(Lunges, Pull-Ups, Squats, Planks, etc..)

Looks Good B & E vD... I perused some of the other listing and didn't see anything... did you include the TriGirl races (May 22 Super Sprint)?  Now I can't recall what's on your list... I kee an eye out.  Is the Battle of San Jac a new Oly race?  I think I remember that name but don't remember it being an Oly.  Anyways.... the list looks good.
