dalessit - 2010-12-29 11:21 AM Anyone ever get severe cramps in their calves or hamstrings?

Some workouts I have on the trainer have me come to a complete stop in the big ring front and small back, then explode as hard as I can.

Most times when I do this my calf siezes up completely, it hurts enough to cry,  I've had to have sam unclip my foot for me because it hurt so bad and I couldn't move.

Today in the pool I was doing some sprints and tried to push off the wall as hard as I could and my hamstring siezed up similar to the way my calf does.  LOL our "lifeguard" is usually staring up at the wall or sleeping, so luckilly it's a shallow pool or I would have been in trouble.

When these happen I am fully warmed up, they tend to be around the middle of the workout.  I've been doing a lot more stretching lately to help with flexibility, so not sure what else I can do there.

Anyone else ever have these or any ideas how to stop them?

Tony, all joking aside (Dino!), both of these types of heavy push movements sound extremely anaerobic in nature.  If your muscles are seizing/locking/cramping, it is quite possible that you do not have the strength in those muscles to withstand such an extreme "push".

Please don't take this the wrong way, it is not a slam on you AT ALL, but so much of how we train is aerobic in nature.  I am one of the weakest (baby muscles according to John, frankly "all skinny and fast") in this group!  Are you doing strength training in addition to your endurance training?  I know you mentioned stretching and yoga for flexibility, but honestly this does not sound like a flexibility issue.  Some have mentioned electrolytes and I would think that too, but for the instances that you mention getting these cramps it doesn't seem like a lack of electrolytes issue.

I am not suggesting you would need to do strength training but especially the bike workout you mention, it might be something to ask your coach if they want you to do that type of explosive movement and you cramp up everytime or lots of the time, what can you do to prevent that from happening.  Sounds kind of scary painful to me!

My vote is your cramping has to have something to do with this type of training ???

tony, man sorry but one more thing and its your fault so i don't feel that bad about piling on.   your fault because you recommended the movie.   i watched nine ball riding today,   first thing tim says is something along the lines of "In my spare time I'm forced to hang out with bunch of guys comparing wattage and ways to be skinnier.  I’m not in to all that."  then something about dealing with shaving his legs.

i almost fell off the trainer again, this time due to laughter thinking about the irony of YOUR recommendation.

ahhhhhhh i love you man!  i really do.

great flick!  how about when he pulls the bottle of champagne out and starts to say crystal but then realizes its just cook.  LOL!!!!!!!   the only thing that was kinda lame was they played drop kick murphy's in portland instead of gloucester.  fire the dude that made that call.

great 45 minute ride.

Tony:

In my experience it is not an electrolyte embalance. I have had those calf cramps swimming, both OWS and pool. It is a matter of developing the muscle strength and endurance. If I work up to things properly that goes away. The hamstrings maybe more of a flexibility issue. If you are prone to tight hamstrings (as I am) you might want to add some exercises/stretches to make them more flexible. JMTCW.

come on man we've had a few beers together,  you should know how to decipher my mumbo jumbo by now....   tony recommended a documentary off netflix called the nine ball diaries.  you'd enjoy it doug.   cyclocross movie.  anyhow in the beginning the guy says how he doesn't much care for wattage geeks.  kinda the opposite of tony.  so they irony in his rec.   drop kick murphy's are a band from the boston area,  and they are very very proud to be from the boston area.   the producer should have taken that into acct when playing amazing grace.  the crystal part,  well you gotta watch it.

hey,  can you ride for sam and i at rev?

Going tomorrow for my 1st ever VO2 max test. Figured since I was doing all this training stuff, not its time to get resonably serious able what it all means....Power is still a bit down the road for me.

So I assume I do a warmup and then run my a$$ off for 10 or 15 minutes?

yep, and don't forget the vaseline, makes things more comfortable than without...

I was going to go completely offside with your response, but figured better of it today.

Thanks, Christina.  I guess a headband would have been smart today.  Boy, I am so impressed by those of you out there training in such cold, windy, snowy conditions.  Cool

The wind freaked me out a bit yesterday. There were so many downed limbs I opted out. Today was beautiful though. Perfect sunny 38-40 degree weather.

I am in need of new tires what is everyone's preference for speed, Longevity, Durability, and puncture resistance.

right now I am using mondos the ones that came with my bike when I bought it, I have over 1,800 miles on the tires and have never had a flat.

I am interested on different tires people have used and there pros and cons with the brands

On the swimming side, sprinting usually means major oxygen deficit and if you haven't sprinted for a while or if you're pushing yourself beyond your normal levels the lactic acid levels especially in your largest muscles (your legs) are probably pretty high causing the cramps.  Also if you're pushing yourself hard on the sprints and doing long rest periods in cool water, your muscles can tighten and cramp.  Some of the things that my swim coach had me do (swim coach knew I had leg cramping issues during races and sprints) that I think helped me was 1) during sprints/suicides he had me constantly moving during the 30-45sec recovery (vertical push-ups, stretch and squats) 2)practice swimming in oxygen deficit situations by doing 5-10 * 100 the first 50 is sprints second 50 is recovery and slow while doing negative splits on 100 and never stopping during the full 500-1000 (it's a really hard drill). 3) During distance swims no breathing 3 strokes into a kick turn and three strokes out 4) at the end of practice 10*25 under water laps.

Trevor I did mean that the way you think.  It was an attempt at humor.

Thanks guys for the cramp advice, these are definitely happening on "explosive" type workouts.  I do some strength workouts, I was also going to ask our coach but was wondering if anyone else did any explosive type workouts and had the same issues.

thanks bryce,

I agree with you there, it is windy here during the spring and summer on my bike rides and it can be hard to stay upright sometimes!  I haven't ever run with a toque or beanie cap but maybe will try that...it just doesn't get that cold here normally.  But running in 30mph winds yesterday brought the temps with windchill into the high 30's and that just wasn't right to be wearing a running cap!  I did have on arm warmers and gloves and that seemed enough on top.  Shorts were a bit cold, i might have to dig out my 3/4 capris.

re: your tire question, I have the Continental 4000's and they have been great.  I even use them on my trainer and am still using my original set from over a year ago...3000+ miles!

that blue rectangle area is a water.

the red line in the water is a swim route.

the graph at the bottom is an elevation profile.

the range of the profile is 50 feet and there are a couple 5% grades.

is. it. clear. now.
