Don't think we can realistically hope to do much better than a high of 85 for August in NY. I am just hoping it is not 95.

Also, I could do without the sun. Overcast would be just fine by me!

Last long run this weekend was great. Seems like I overdid it though because next day for my last long ride my legs were cooked and it was sub-par. Fighting every urge now to go out and "make it up" with another long bike ride. Need to stay on the taper plan and recover with prescribed workouts....better to come in slightly undertrained than overtrained, etc., etc.

I would be perfectly happy with 85 & overcast! I could do without rain, although a few sprinkles here and there wouldn't be so bad...

Fight the urge to make up that long bike!!

Hey Team.

Just curious, where is everyone planning on doing a little swimming on the days leading up to the race?

Hi all -

I am trying to figure what time to eat race morning - Question is - Will there be porta potties at the swim start? Leaving at 6 for a ferry and starting at 7 or later - When will be the last chance for a bathroom?

  Matt

The NYC Marathon claims the Verrazano Bridge is the "world's longest urinal." I think the Hudson's gonna take that claim on 8/11.

Seriously, doubt there are portopotties on the swim start barge. Guessing there'll be the ferry's bathrooms. But realistically, I think your last chance will be at transition.

I'll swim earlier in the week at home - monday and wed. I'll be in NYC on Thursday and won't swim till I jump in the Hudson on race day.

I think the weather gods are toying with me.

I specifically requested NO HUMIDITY! I can take heat or rain or whatever else. I just wilt in the humidity though.

And actually, it's also important that we don't get rain in the days leading up to the race. The overflow into the hudson makes it unhealthy.

I looked through the thread and haven't seen anyone ask this yet (although I could have missed it), so I figured I would throw it out there. What is everyone doing with their wetsuits post race? I actually signed up to get my bike transported over to the pier so my wife didn't have to go get it. Then I realized I was going to have a wetsuit. Are they going to take those as well? Anyone know?

I would wake up at 4 and eat a 300-400 calorie snack- bagel and peanut butter or something. Then, maybe something small at 5 and about 100 calories an hour before the start.

Not sure about port o potties. I but bring a small roll of TP just in case. There are always garbage cans.

If I recall correctly from Lake Placid a couple of years ago (everything is kind of a fog from that day), the way it works is that your wetsuit goes into your bike gear bag during T1 (you take out your helmet, shoes, bike clothes, etc. and put in your wetsuit after you change).  My understanding is that Tribike Transport is transporting bikes and gear bags post race from transition to the pier (for those that sign up for the service).

Similar process for T2, run clothes and shoes come out of the run gear bag and bike clothes and equipment go into the run gear bag.

Special needs bags are a different story.  According to the Athlete Guide, those are gone forever (and I believe them for this race - they probably don't want to bother transporting 2000 bags back across the river).

Unfortunately, more often then not its pretty humid in this area.  Not to upset you, but be prepared for a humid day and will all hope it's not.

I'm the same as you, hate the humidity.  Sucks the hydration right outta me.

I am staying at the host hotel and we have to be on a shuttle to the ferry at 3:30a which for me means waking up at 2:45 am. I plan on having a protein shake at that time then I am going to eat a protein bar when they drop us off in transition. Its going to be a long morning before the race even starts which is freaking me out. I think its fabulous that you were able to find accomodations that allow you to sleep a little later. If I knew this race was going to more or less start in the middle of the night I wouldnt have been so quick to sign up.

It has been confirmed that all amplified sound will be stopped at 10:00PM so if you want to hear Mike Reilly call out "***** You are and Ironman" you will need to finish before 10:00. I am sure there will be a lot of cheering but it is really nice to actually hear it announced.  Hopefully I will make it in time.

I think that really stinks!

I am 99.9% sure I will not be finished by 10pm.  Oh well.

That does stink. I would be pretty happy to be done by 10p but I'm definitely not counting on it.
The announcer and the music is the thing I was counting on the most. The news gets better with every day leading up to the race, huh??

Are you guys planning to wear a wetsuit on race day? At the Governor's Island swim on Saturday, only a few people wore one, but the water was fine enough without one.

Since the Ironman is currently slated to be wetsuit legal, would it make sense to take advantage of the option, since the bike & run courses are largely against us?

I will be wearing my sleeveless on race day.

I need any help I can get...wearing a long sleeve (because that's what I own) and hoping the water is salty (lots of float!) and the current is with us...

I am doing the same thing and had no interest in finishing late and then having to find a ferry to NJ and back before 1:00 a.m. to get my bike and gear bags. TriBike told me they will bring back your bike and transition bags but (as mentioned) not special needs. Let's hope they are reliable! Only wrinkle is you cannot get your bike until the next day. Not an issue for me as I am staying over anyway...I think it is well worth the $50. Also doing athlete tracker so family can get updates on my progress and not have to stand around for hours waiting for me to arrive in Manhattan. Those two things will hopefully make the complicated logistics a little easier......

How did you find out about Tri Bike? I am staying at the host hotel as well. That would be quite excellent if I didn't have to deal with the bike after the race. I did Florida in 2010 and it felt like I was walking on tacks by the time I finished the race. I used TriBike for that race and it was very nice to not have to deal with my bike. They were fine.

When you say athlete tracker are you talking Ironmanlive  or a GPS unit or maybe other?

Think I am using http://www.myathletelive.com/for my tracker.

Just thought I'd jump in and hijack the thread!  No, not really.

I wanted to comment on the MyAthlete tracker.  I used one for IM Moo last year and thought it was great, it allowed my family to see fairlly "real-time" where I was on the course and they could plan their day around it.  The iPad version of the tracker seemed to be slightly better than the iPhone one, but both worked well.

One word of caution, though.....absolutely do a short test run with the tracker around your waist before race day.  I didn't do this and I wish I had.  The unit itself is basically a 2" x 1" cube, about the size of a toy matchbox car.  But it weighs almost twice what a toy car would.  This unit is inside a small pouch which is attached to a race-type belt, similar to the Fuel Belt race belts.  The issue is that the extra weight tends to bounce when running, and I was not prepared for that.  I didn't notice this until T2 on race day, and as soon as I took two steps out of T2, I decided I wasn't going to deal with this bouncing for 26 miles and ditched the thing in my Bike to Run bag.

So just be prepared, and realize it could be something new if you're not used to bulky items around your waist.

Good luck to you guys doing the race next weekend! I'll be doing the weather dance and offering sacrafices to the weather gods for you.

Steve

The one concern I have about using Tri-bike to return my bike...how are they going to sort out all the transition bags they bring back? I just fear this huge pile that you have to sort through yourself.

Which brings up another question....if TriBike can return up to 5000 Transition bags, what's so hard about bringing the Special Needs bags back too?

I did notice that after 10pm, cars are allowed in Ross Dock, so that's an option to pick up your bike and bags.

Hey Team.

I am travelling on my own from Canada so I don't have any other option and will have no one there to pick my bike up for me. I decided several weeks ago that I am probably not going to want to get back over there and get it so I signed up for the service from TriBike.

TriBike Transport sent out an email today to let everyone that has signed up know they will be set up at the transition area on Friday to pick up your ID for your bikes so they can be tagged. Look for the red TriBike Transport tent. Also, if you are trying to contact them they suggest you do it by email.

Stay safe everyone.

And best part...58% humidity!!!

Did I mention I hate humidity???

And great that the weather seems pretty stable leading up to the race.
