I think it'll end up being Southwest or Frontier.  I had considered TriBikeTransport, but it's a two hour drive for me to the closest drop off point, so that by itself is more hassle for me than just bringing it in a bike box and doing it myself.

You get so few perfect training days in Minnesota and we truly had one today. Rode 74 miles this morning and hardly broke a sweat. No humidity, clear blue skies and low 60 degree temps.

Nice!! I'm ready to just pack my bike up and head up there after hearing that. Starting temp for today's ride (@0530) was 93°!

Low 60's would be nice. I felt like I was riding into a wall with all the humidity. Between that and bug earlier in the week I was spent after 53 mi. I'll just be green with envey today as I run. Ha

Well, training hasn't been going as planned, I pretty much fell off the horse all together after our mini vacation a week a half ago.

It seem's everytime I try to do something I get caught up in work or life. I know excuses, excuses. This morning I was going to so a 2 hour run, but 3 year old son was in ER instead with a 105 temp.

Things sgould get better though, the biggest limiter for me the last few has been taking the kids to daycare in the morning and picking them up after work. That really chewed into my before/after work time, and once I leave work and head for home if I don't have a work out already done, it's probably not going to get done.

I've tried the night time workout thing and it doesn't work for me, not only are my workouts worse, but then I sleep like crap and it ruins my next day.

Anyway, back on track this week for sure, wife is back to school so she will be taking the kids to daycare and I'll have that time back, plus not have to pick up the kids by 5 so I'll be back at the gym and on the bike in the afternoon.

Not much else going on. Will be doing a HIM on Sunday and will practice a few things. After that I evaluate and move on.

Might be time for you to get used to 4:00 a.m. I have found it is almost impossible for me to work out after work. Once your body gets used to waking up early it really isn't all that bad. That way I have time for my family after they get home from school and work and I don't feel like anyoneis getting neglected. Of course this means a lot of going to bed at 9:00 pm, but I have found once the kids are in bed my wife and I are pretty worn out and 9:00 bedtime sounds just fine.

My lodging feel apart, but there's good news.  I found an extended stay america hotel studio in Tempe for $45 a night.  Pool and kitchen with cook top, fridge and dish washer 2 miles from the start/finishline.  It's called the hempstead.

I have always done SOMA as an IMAZ tune-up.  Not a super hard effort, just a nice confidence building race!

No.  I almost wish I hadn't signed up for the HIM I'm doing 10 weeks out...

No. The temptation to go really hard would be too much. Never know what could happen at that point. I would rather spend the weekend three weeks out getting a really long bike and/or run in and working on IM pacing. Not getting HIM distance at a non sustainable IM pace.

I'm going to win Soma four weeks (Oct 21st) before crushing IMAZ.

Three weeks out (Oct 28/29) I'll do peak distance on the bike and run.

Two weeks out (Nov 3) I do my longest brick.

One week out I'll become unstoppable.

I like the plan. My only suggestion would be to push back the "unstoppable" one week.

Climbinggonzo - 2012-08-09 3:17 PM Trying to book flights today, and running into the dilemma of trying to figure out the best airfare including cost of bike box as baggage.  Anyone with experience care to comment on a bike box not really being 62 linear inches (the std. airline max) but being able to check it as normal luggage?  Several airlines mention that bikes are free as long as they're within standard baggage allowances (size and weight), but the size restrictions almost entirely exclude bike boxes because the smallest bike boxes I have found are 47x30x11.

Last year for B2B I used bikeflights.com.  Fedex picked it up at my house and dropped it at my hotel.  Easy.  Nearest Tri-Bike Transport drop off point for me is 1 hour, two hours round trip.  Plus another two hours after the event. For IMAZ I think I will ship it again, saves me so much hassle.

For those IM Arizona vets,

If you had to give one piece of advice for first timers at IM Arizona, what would it be?

An article about doing a HIM in your IM training (odd that it came in e-mail just yesterday)...

I may or may not be unstoppable in Arizona...but, at Thanksgiving, WATCH OUT! I'm almost looking forward to that more than the race!

Practice swimming and sighting into the sun.  The first mile or so of the swim will be facing into the morning sun.  Sunrise on Race day is 7:02am.

Do the practice swim so you are prepared for the COLD water.  Bring full sleeve wetsuit, wear a neoprene hat, and contemplated the booties.  i decided to forego the booties, instead smeared lots of vaseline all over my feet and hands to keep the cold out (little MN winter running trick).  It worked fabulously, until it washed off 2/3 of the way through the swim. (I'm very slow).  wow, it was COLD.  out of the water, the volunteer told me I didn't need to go in the warm up tent because I wasn't cramping, was just so cold my hands didn't function.  I should not have listened as I literally had to have someone else take undress me and put all my clothes on.  no feeling in feet or hands for the first half of loop one and my mph reflected that.

wear neoprene, use vaseline, go through the warming tent, and have hot water in a thermous in T1 bag.  -- i guess that's not one piece of advice, unless you chacterize it as "stay warm!"

yes, but 4 would be better.  is a good final tune up to run through things like nutrition, transitioning, last check on shorts and bike performance, and mental checklist of yeah - I am ready.  plus, if your party is starting to grind, this is a check on what feels twingy -- I discovered my knee was not particularly happy, but still working, so wore a knee brace for AZ - just elastic CVS one, but was enough to keep the knees happy
