Master 2177 | Subject: RE: Slornow and Wannabefaster's Winter Mentor Group-CLOSED Saturday: 10.5 mile bike and 2 mile run. Had to be quick. So many things going on. Sunday: Super Sprint Tri, 200m swim/6 mile bike/1.5 mile run, then 6 mile run with my running group. I was told by someone who's been around since I first froze on the swim portion of this race a year ago that I looked really strong, and have come a long way from that panicked swim. That made me feel really good. I think the road bike made a huge difference in my overall time. Can't wait for the results! Happy weekend! |

You have made fantastic progress. Another example of hard work, consistency and persistence paying off. Glad you had a great race.....and that you are feeling better about the road bike. Longish bike workout this morning.....the garage awaits. |

Reading the thread gives me training envy. |

Master 3058 South Alabama | Subject: RE: Slornow and Wannabefaster's Winter Mentor Group-CLOSED Mary/Nicole-glad to have you checking in. Don't get down about missing a few days of workouts. Focus on the big picture....long term. Finished my bike workout. I'm exhausted. Now that I'm back running some my legs are not nearly as fresh heading into my bike workouts. This was a tough one and I hit all the intervals but it killed me. Not sure I'll have much left for the rest of the day...heading to the couch for a little rest. |

Extreme Veteran 990 Collierville, Tennessee | Subject: RE: Slornow and Wannabefaster's Winter Mentor Group-CLOSED Long with run Nate this morning; we both noticed how easy it was because of the warm temps. It was about 65 degrees and I ran in shorts and a tank top, in the middle of January. I can deal with this, but it doesn't bode well for this summer... |

Master 1779 | Subject: RE: Slornow and Wannabefaster's Winter Mentor Group-CLOSED Houston Half Marathon completed- 1:46:56. Not quite the time that I wanted but I'll take it. Still have some work to do on bringing those run times down. Perfect running weather today.-IMO. Other people that were there would probably disagree. Yes, it was raining and cold but that is so much better than running when it is hot and humid. The streets were pretty slick and filled with standing water on the course. I ran in a singlet and arm warmers and started getting hot around mile 5. I'm always hot when I run. Most people were bundled up for the race. I can't imagine running with layers of wet, cold clothes during a race. I felt really bad for the volunteers. They looked miserable out on the course. Edited by Catwoman 2013-01-13 11:58 AM |

Veteran 218 | Subject: RE: Slornow and Wannabefaster's Winter Mentor Group-CLOSED Hi all, I feel like I've been a pretty poor member of this group so far... Been super busy at work getting ready to take 100 5th graders to science camp for 5 days. We leave tomorrow morning. Very limited internet access at camp so I won't be checking in next week much either. For training, I've fallen behind where I want to be too. One more week of slacking due to work, (the camp is at 8000 feet, I'm used to living at sea level) then I'll be back at it on the 20th. I have 11 weeks till Oceanside 70.3. I've got lots to do by then. On the good side, my fitness hasn't fallen too much. The wife and I ran a half marathon this morning and I was able to average an 11 minute mile. Not too bad for almost no training for the last few weeks. I've kept up with my spin classes taught by an awesome cyclist/triathlete that really keeps my cycling legs good. So, when I get back, I plan on getting at lest 2 swims, 2 spin classes and a long weekend ride and 4 runs each week. I also plan on getting more posts in here as well. Oh, BTW, You all seem to be having lots of success, even those getting sick and getting over it. I need to go back and read some more posts, I missed all the traffic issues.... |

Regular 134 Wichita, KS | Subject: RE: Slornow and Wannabefaster's Winter Mentor Group-CLOSED Completed my second sprint Tri (500yds/6mi/2mi). Got a foot cramp at 200yds and had to switch to breast to finish without stopping. Dropped my swim pace to 2:15/100. It may have due to the fact my pool has been shut down for the last week. Drank too much water during the bike portion and felt like puking during the run. I have a lot to learn. Fortunately, I have one of these each month until May. It'll be fun to watch the improvements. I love data. |

Master 2177 | Subject: RE: Slornow and Wannabefaster's Winter Mentor Group-CLOSED Thanks, Randy! It felt good and my sighting was much improved as well. Hugged those buoys and the turns, haha! Awesome job with the half, Rene! Whew! One day I hope to finish one in 2 hours. I'd be thrilled and am so impressed with you. Today I'll be in the gym for a short, easy 3 miles on the treadmill, some strength work for my core, arms, and back, then swimming with swim team tonight. I'm aiming to get more bike miles by doing my runs in the morning and riding at lunch. Lord, help me. Swims are always in the early evening. Enjoy the rest of your Sunday! |

Master 3205 ann arbor, michigan | Subject: RE: Slornow and Wannabefaster's Winter Mentor Group-CLOSED Jamie, Don't feel like you are slacking. Everyone checks in and does what they can. This is after all Beginner Triathlete, not Professional Triathlete. We all have jobs, families and lives outsied of triathlon that need to be attended to. For all of those who have missed a few workouts for whatever reason.... take heart. The triathlon season is a long one (as in, it never stops) so sometimes missing a little bit of time will recharge your mental batteries as well as your physical ones. In reading about Craig Alexander (3 x IM world Champion), he talked about his training getting derailed by illness/injury in early 2011 and how much it depressed him. Later in 2011 he won both the 70.3 and 140.6 World Championships and he attributed much of his winning to being much fresher because of the forced time off early in the season. I know I always preach about consistency but I am coming to believe that a little break now and then might be a pretty darn good thing. If you are sick, take some time and get well. When you come back you will be that much more enthusiastic to do the training. |

Master 1779 | Subject: RE: Slornow and Wannabefaster's Winter Mentor Group-CLOSED Thanks for the sweet notes! X2 on what Jason just posted about training. Sometimes life gets in the way of training. The key is finding ways to make triathlon fit with your life versus trying to fit your life around triathlon. I think one of the best reasons to have a coach is that they can plan your training schedule around your life, goals and limitations. They're also the voice of reason when you can't work out due to illness, injury or life stress. Edited by Catwoman 2013-01-13 8:00 PM |

Master 3058 South Alabama | Subject: RE: Slornow and Wannabefaster's Winter Mentor Group-CLOSED Catwoman - 2013-01-13 7:58 PM notes! Yep! Agree with what Jason said as well. I find that sometimes I'm trying to fit life around triathlon......not the other way around and not a great idea. It is much easier for me as my kids are older. Keep it all in perspective. Good coaches serve many useful purposes. Ideally, the coach works with your schedule to get the most out of the time you have available. Sometimes, the best use of time is recovery. With that said, I'm convinced my current coach regularly gives me workouts that he doesn't expect I'll be able to complete (I constantly have the same doubts). There are times I've come up short and times I've surprised myself. Today, I've been totally useless after my bike workout....I'm sure the hard session will pay off but right now I'm pretty sure my coach hates me and the feeling is mutual Its all for fun and the benefit of living a healthier lifestyle. We just can't forget that.....even though I sometimes do. |

Master 2177 | Subject: RE: Slornow and Wannabefaster's Winter Mentor Group-CLOSED So, I had a 12ish minute improvement between last year's Super Sprint Tri and Sunday's. I am very happy about that. Last year it took me 1:01:32 to finish a 200m swim, 6 mile bike, and 1.5 mile run. This year I did it in 49:04. I did the 1st one on my mountain bike and the 2nd with my road bike. Squee! I see an improvement. |

Member 432 Calgary, AB | Subject: RE: Slornow and Wannabefaster's Winter Mentor Group-CLOSED Finished my 4th run of the week (for 3 weeks straight!) -- a good, long run -- 70 minutes. Same as last week's long run. Best part is -- I did it through a very tough work week -- yes, it can be done! Congrats to all who raced this weekend -- I'm still a good 3 months from my first race of the year -- can't wait! Scott. |
