Kelly - So I read up about the Hoka One One and I think I get the pros associated with their shoes. I also read some reviews that did not look upon it favorably. Here is one that is a proponent of the more minimalist shoe.

http://naturalrunningcenter.com/2013/01/12/comfort-question-running-pillows-hoka-one/

I know nothing about shoes and have a couple of questions. 1) I think you tended to favor the more neutral shoe - so could you explain the pros that you see associated with Hoka One One.

And (this goes out to all)...the proponents of the more minimalist shoe say that it helps with form/running whereas the extra cushion and support of some shoes do the opposite. How would these arguments apply for someone with flat feet (me).

Here's my favorite article on the shoes:

http://www.slowtwitch.com/Products/Running_Footwear_by_brand/Hoka_One_One/What_Hoka_Means_3376.html

Here's another one on shoe height and ramp angle:

http://www.slowtwitch.com/Products/Running_Footwear_by_type/Shoe_Height_and_Ramp_Angle_1948.html

You're correct that I generally favor the most minimalist shoe an individual person can wear.

While the Hoka One One is cushioned, its cushioned on both the forefoot and heel, has a low ramp angle (4 mm -- the same as they Saucony Kinvaras) and doesn't have over design in a roll bar, heel crash pad or fore foot lugs.  In fact it has no high-density foam on the insole's medial side, no post, no plate, no wave.  I haven't run much in the One One but I can tell you because of the way the outsole is design its almost impossible to heel strike in these shoes.  Also while the shoes look huge they're incredibly light.

After a few more runs, I'll write up a review.  For now I think they're interesting and they're likely to encourage good form without tons of over design.

Interesting.  I'm going to read the ST article when I have more time.  These shoes really do look like big pillows.  I find it interesting that they discourage heel striking, which is a huge issue for me.  Let us know what your final thoughts are on this shoe once you've run the field tests and run some miles in them.  Curious here.

enders_shadow - 2013-05-16 7:05 AM Nice run this morning at 5:15...awesome that it is almost light then - kind of like a twi-dawn? Not quite sunrise, but not pitch black? Whatever that time is - it was good. Followed plan (60 minutes, strides every 10) and hope to get in the plan 30-min easy spin tonight to stretch out legs. Unfortunately it's grading time - so between that and the class this week, I may have to squeeze that out. But I'm hoping.

Grade on the bike?

jarvy01 - 2013-05-15 4:42 PMLarkin! Thank you! The spring tension on my pedals was on the tightest setting. I was able to loosen them up and they feel normal now . I'm going to test them outside this weekend and see if they work better this way. Yay!!!!
Great!! Make sure your cleats are lined up correctly as well.

Correct cleat position is one of the things that should be addressed during a good fit.

My fitter adjusted my cleats after watching me ride/giving me a proper fit.  Do they need to be adjusted again now that I have altered pedal tension?

So short swim and run in.  May spin the legs out later.  Pretty much just relaxing and napping today.  My parents get here around 2:30, I have the athletes dinner, practice swim in the morning to grab some landmarks to sight off of (maybe 10 minutes tops), bike check in, and then more relaxing.  I'll try to get some pics up as I go.

Does WTC make you wear that bracelet on your wrist for 3 days?  Just curious.

Try to get some rest, Scott.  I know you're probably getting excited and it's so hard to chill when that energy sets in.

So I told my daughters that I'd slow down to give them kisses on the run.  Reagan, the emotional one, was flattered.  Abby, the hardcore one, said "If you slow down you will lose.  You need to run faster."

Yes.  You need to wear the bracelet from the time you check in (2-3 days before the race) until you finish.  Its how you get access to transition pre-race, drop off your gear bags, get access on race morning, etc.

I still have the bracelets from al five of my IMs.

Once you've had the free food at the banquet, I think your excitement level will change as the quality of the food is commensurate with the price charged.

That's too funny. For me it's Cayden and Reese but they would say the same thing. The most beat I've ever been after a race was the NYC Olympic not one of my HIMs. It was 93 with 100% humidity. The medical tent was filled with people getting IVs. The two guys in front of me both went to get them as did the two after. I was really considering it but knew I'd get stuck there for at least a couple of hours and didn't want that. They gave out towels out of an ice bin so I threw that around my neck and grabbed a couple of coconut waters and a recovery drink and sat under a tree. Reese comes up and is concerned and says are you ok? Cayden comes up and says, with a ton of attitude, why didn't you win? Because it's a brutally hot and there's better athletes here than me? Ya but I would have tried.

Sorry I have been out the past few days...I was finished up final exams and didn't get much training done. So to celebrate after my last one this morning, I went on a bike ride. 10 minutes in, I pick up too much speed going around a corner and the bike came right out from under me. I think my pedal hit the pavement. No I have a huge gash in my hand, but more importantly, the side of my saddle is ripped! Along with various other scratches on the gears, hood, and handlebars. This makes me sad, since I just got the bike a month ago

At least everything still works properly. Strangely, when I woke up this morning, I had the sense that I was going to get into some kind of accident. I am just glad it wasn't a car accident or something fatal. Anyways, life goes on.

Certain it's probably a bunch of stuff containing gluten (pasta) and I'll just have to sit and stare at it.  I thought I read somewhere that Texas actually has one of the better banquets.

I just read Lauren Goss's 2 day food log over on ST.  Wow.  Is this how little all female pro triathletes eat?  A 4.5 oz. EFS flask for a 2.5 hour ride with hard intervals???  I don't know how to link the thread here, but I'm sure if you google her blog it will pop up.  I eat 3x what she eats on a long training day Surprised

Take care of that hand though, I know all about serious hand gashes.  I was off of a bike for over a year due to a severe cut in my left hand.

Glad you're (mostly) ok.  I would bring the bike into the shop for a quick once over just to make sure everything is ok.  Sometimes you can do damage that isn't visible.
