Jamie- thanks for posting your run progress. That is really inspiring. I think you're down playing your bike abilities!

Randee- congrats on your sponsorship. That's really cool!

Kevin- be careful with that knee! Glad that it is feeling better but you don't want to push it.

Mary- did you get out with your bike today?

Stuart- just don't let that Perpetuem get hot. It's pretty NASTY once it gets hot.

Jimmy- great to see your schedule. I'll be tri sherpa for a friend of mine at IMTX this year. Hopefully we can meet up or see each other on the course. Also not only will you see Jason at IMAZ- you'll get to meet me!

I've had a really solid week/weekend of training. Which is probably why I've eaten basically anything and everything in sight today. Things are starting to come back together.

I spent a huge chunk of the weekend at my daughter's swim meet. She just turned 11 and is pretty small but had a great weekend of swimming. It is interesting to see the girls in her age group, 11-12. Many are like my daughter, just turned 11 and still kids. Many are 12, almost 13, bigger than me, and for lack of better words; they resemble adults. Many of those almost 13 year old girls are swimming really fast times. Think 1:01 for a 100 at age 12. It might not impress Stuart but it blew my mind. It is amazing how much girls change and grow up in the two years between 11 and 13. I know my daughter was a little intimidated when she lined up on the blocks next to kids who are a foot taller than her.........

Watching these kids sure was humbling. First, there are 9-10 year olds who are turning faster 100s than I ever will. Second, I watched a lot of "slow" kids in the pool and realized that they were swimming MY PACE! I usually feel pretty good in the water. I had no idea that I was that slow. To watch someone swimming and think, man that kid is slow and then get smacked int he face with the knowledge that as slow as they looked, they are faster than me. It kind of left me depressed. Not sure if I am ever going to figure it out in the pool but I guess I need to keep trying. Wah

OK....no need to ever go to a swim meet now. Last thing I need is another reminder that swimming is not nearly as hard as it seems......well at least for some people. I don't like those people

Swim and short run done. Also must have made 30 trips up and down our steps moving Christmas decorations to the attic. That on top of some leg work at the gym and I am whipped. All I can do to pick up my glass and sip on some liquid rehabilitation.

Yep, there's nothing like feeling good about yourself...and then seeing someone who really does know what they're doing!

I am really in awe of young athletes who put so much effort into their sports.  I've watched some really little kids power down that 25y at break neck pace with no regard for anything other than speed and fun, technique be damned.  I love it.  I wish I had done that when I was your daughters age.

I was in the pool a few weeks ago and this guy jumped in the lane next to me. He was a swimmer in college, probably just a few years out, and it was just disgusting watching him. I talked to him a bit as he was resting and he said his typical days in college were 12k+ yards. Absolutely insane to watch him just glide.

Last 3 days, here is, in order the things that have broke in my household(s):
Furnace at our rental property - $2k+ just in equipment, luckily "I have a guy"
My wifes car - Just died on the highway, I think it's a coil mis-firing, but when we pulled over we got a MASSIVE gash in the tire from some debris.
Snowblower - Luckily it can saved and we don't need a new one, but $$ later, it's just not good timing.

Sorry, end rant. I also did a kicka$$ bike ride last night (6x3'@110% then 20'@90% with intervals, total sweat fest) and had a really nice 5 mile run Saturday.

Howdy, everyone...I've been off the grid since Friday...busy weekend!

Training was a four-mile treadmill run Saturday morning after a 30 min easy trainer ride.  Sunday was a day off...my daughter had a swim meet (and did really great).  This morning was my usual Bikram session then an early lunch bike/run session, followed by an airplane ride.   Now I'm in Memphis.

I'll get caught up while I'm here and post some...lots going on!

Just wanted to pop in and thank everyone for their input on my bike indecision. You'll find I'm really good at indecision!!

After listening to you guys here and talking to hubby, and thinking things through a bunch, I decided to go with the frankenbike.

Not just because I can call it that!

I had a couple factors that ended up pushing me that way.

One, DH is really going to enjoy making it (small factor) and I'll get some quiet me time out of his building time.

Two, this is my first year in traithlons- I'm only doing sprints in all likelihood, and I don't know if I'm going to really take to it. It'll be a good first year bike that is pretty quick, not super fast, is easy to fix, because DH will know it inside and out, and will be good for commuting as well, without me really worrying about how expensive it is. (much bigger factor)

Third reason- my son is growing, and in about 2 years, he'll be big enough for it. If I'm still biking a ton and tri-racing etc, he gets this bike, I get a brand new one then. Even I'm not racing, he might get this one and I'll get a new one. Or I won't be riding that much at all, and it won't be an issue. (another bigger factor)

In the meantime, I can keep an eye open for a great deal and not feel rushed.

Rene - would love to meet you in person at IM Texas! Do you or anyone else in the group recc any hotels close to race site in the Woodlands? I'm 6 months too late for the Waterway hotel.

So nice to get back into training!!!

30 min high cadence bike followed by 1 hour z2 run. Ended up getting rained on and thus not properly dressed but then again, HTFU!!!! Will get to pool tomorrow, first time in about 3 weeks. Wish me luck!!

I did my first heart rate test on the treadmill today. Surprisingly it didn't suck that bad. Maybe it means I didn't work hard enough

Then I had a craptastic day at work! YAY NOT.

Here's hoping tomorrow is better!

On the road all day for work. Never fun when its gloomy and raining. UGH! Tomorrow is another busy day at work so I'll have to get my swim in early....never my favorite thing to do. I'm an early riser but for whatever reason I always seem to have bad swims first thing in the morning. Maybe tomorrow will be different.

Today was off day or optional easy bike. Of course I did the bike ride. Super easy.

Woohooo!  Just did my longest swim ever!  EVER!!!!  Just had to gush for two seconds and knew you all would be kind enough to indulge...

I know for you full IM's, it is not big deal; but 1.5 miles is a really long way for this neophyte!  Just sayin'!

Sorry for all of you who are enduring the weather challenges.  We had cruddy weather this weekend, but the sun was out for a bit today...a winter rarity in North Idaho, so it made me happy.  All in all, a banner day!

So, here is a question....if you have crappy knees (think, bone on bone...staving off replacement) can you pull off a full IM (not saying I'm actually going to; but, I'm trying to train the distance with a friend who is...can't hurt for my half at Calgary) by running only 2x per week and saving the knees for the races?  I was able to do that for the 70.3...just wondering if it is do-able for a full. All thoughts are most welcome!

  Cheers!

Erika

Jason actually that is quite impressive. I see the kids around here on the swim teams and they are much faster much earlier than back in the stone age when I swam. You know, when we had to swim uphill both ways!

Girls seem to peak much sooner than boys so that is really not that surprising for girls who dedicate themselves to the sport. Just make sure she keeps having fun. One of my best friends was a top AG swimmer at that age. By the time she was 16-17 she was so burned out on the sport she never realized her full potential having spent the last few years of her swimming career just going through the motions.

That is the number one thing I tell people who join this sport...Have Fun!

Erika congrats on the swim. Each milestone is just a place to pass through on your way to your goals. Keep up the good work.

As far as the run I will make a comment based on having a hip replacement and not as anything that even approximates a good runner. My doctor is Ok with me doing an IM but has two rules. First I had to move from a heel strike to something less bone jarring like Chi running. Second I had to promise to give up running after my IM (planned for Nov 2015). I am fine with both since I hate running. If you like to run then you are going to have to accept that your knee is going to take some damage. Maybe check to see if there is something in your form that you can modify to minimize the impact on the knees.

With my limited experience only on shorter races I was able to do a Sprint with exactly six days training on the run. For full disclosure that was before the hip replacement but 15 years after major knee surgery when I broke the knee joint bone and broke a piece of the knee cap off. I was in really good bike shape but almost no running.

What I am saying is I plan to do less running than most triathletes would do in preparation for an IM but hopefully will be in excellent swim and bike shape. It will likely mean a poor run time but poor is a relative term. I don't think I could ever do it fast.

Not sure that really answers your question but my 2 cents nonetheless. Good luck.

It’s been a couple days since I have had more than a minute to check in. Sunday was supposed to be my first easy run but I chose not to do it that day, which was very hard. I coach hockey and we had a tournament that day and I was on the ice for almost four hours with a bunch of 7-8 year olds and it was the longest I had skated since surgery, knee was a little swollen. I had actually been looking forward to this ridiculously short run for two weeks and I was bummed to skip it but in the end I decided (ok, my nurse wife decided) that discretion was the better part of valor here, so just a short bike ride for me after hockey on Sunday.

Yesterday, however, was the day. Finally a little run. I really tried hard to follow instructions and I came pretty close. It was supposed to be 5 minutes of running at 10 minute pace or slower. Well, I was close. About 7 minutes at just under 10 minute pace…luckily the ice and freezing rain slowed me down or I would have been faster…ooops!! I really have to work on that. The doc said it is really important for me to keep that pace almost painfully slow while I build up these distances and strengthen my connective tissues. It really is tough. Good news is after warming up and cooling down on bike and icing right after the run, it appears this morning as if there is little to no swelling. Yay!

Now I don’t get to run again until Thursday so that stinks but I will be back on the bike. Also, have swim lesson set up for Thursday at lunch. If that falls through again somehow I am still going to the pool, even if I have to doggy paddle laps…

Have a great day everyone!

'Morning from Memphis everyone!!  Hotel treadmill this morning and my lower body strength/core workout...well, as much of it as I could do just with body weight and some dumbbells.

@Jason - re:  swim meets...I had the same experience this weekend.  Though my daughter is 11 1/2 this week and is 5'4", so she's not little by any means, I can agree on the intimidation factor by some of those athletes nearing the top of their AG.  What's really exciting to me (other than my daughter loves it and we don't take it that seriously yet...) is that she basically sets a PR every time she gets into the pool.  I used to be able to swim workouts with her...not any more.

On the swimming note, can I say how much I'm loving the Master's Swim class I'm taking? I was really hesitant about joining it, but every session, the coach has me going harder or doing different workouts than I'd ever do on my own. Just in the month I've been going, I can feel a real difference in my swimming. For instance, last night we did a lot of breast stroke sets that I would never do on my own. I'd recommend anyone who can should join in with their local Master's class. It's also a great way to have someone critique your stroke, and/or, like me, if you actually want to learn other strokes. I can actually do a truly awful backstroke now, which is huge improvement over before!

That's great. So many people say that really is the best way to challenge yourself continuously. I wish I could make the times of the masters swim near me but I have to drop the kid off in the AM and that's when my local YMCA has masters. Maybe in the summers when my wife is off I could do it.

Did a swim today myself. I really need to bump the 2 days a week up to 3 but work is showing no signs of slowing down at the moment so I kind of take what I can get.

Thanks Stuart.  That's good info...my doc told me "no more running" in 2003 (two weeks before my 6th marathon).  Well, I listened to him for a while, but now I figure, that running twice a week cannot possibly be worse than carting around 50 extra pounds seven days a week!  So, here I am.  That is why I switched from running and aerobic stuff to triathlons.  I've been ok with the sprint, olympic, and half distances...I'm just not sure if I can pull off the full...both from a "can my body withstand it" standpoint and a "can you do it only running two days/week" standpoint.  I know that my body won't take three days a week.  After a 5 mile run last weekend, my left knee looks as if it is housing a small elephant.

Re: swim classes...I think the master's classes are really helpful if you can get to them.  If not, there are tons of interval workouts and drills available on line that can be incorporated into your training.  It isn't as good as having someone who knows what they are doing watching and giving tips; but it is better than just shlogging through the laps.

Mike...congrats on your daughter's progress!  Very cool that each time is a new PR!  Fun for both of you!!!

Hi Erika

As an AG'er and somehow who has done 4 IM, I don't think it is a good idea to do long course with your knee issues. Notice I didn't say it was impossible to do it.  I just don't think it is healthy and I think it sets you up for injury even during your training.  IM requires a lot more volume than a half and as you increase the swimming and the biking, it affects your legs for those runs even if it is only two a week.    I know people who have walked the full marathon and planned it that way, including someone who needs a knee replacement.  It required months of rehab and PT and a complete cease in biking and running.  It woudn't be worth the risk for me.

There is so much more to triathlon that getting to IM.  I think I forgot that for a while, but am looking forward to kicking things into high gear and doing really well in Olys!

Just my two cents.

Well, dang, Suzy...that is undeniably good counsel.  I've definitely thought about it; but I guess I tried to do so without the real possibility of it limiting me for future smaller distance events.  Maybe the 70.3 is the max for me...I just hate that though...

If I train the longer distances, it would be to walk a good portion for sure.  I did walk the last 12 miles of a marathon once (second to last one before I quit) and it was way worse than running.  I don't know how those walkers do it.  I think maybe it is like anything else...if you train for it, you'll be ok.  If I do this, I will train with walk breaks so my body can adjust.

I hear what you're saying though...just don't like it much.

Thanks though...
