The Anti-Trainer law in AZ is because there is no such thing as too cold to ride there. There for no trianer needed.

I'll have you know it gets frigging freezing here.  I'm still red from the cold post run and that is after I took a hot shower.  Got to love those cold days where once you get in the shower you just don't want to leave it.

If you take 2 - timers I will still check in on you guys.  I entered a new mentor group when EvD explained he couldn't do it this time.

Kim - suck it up and ride in circles for 4 hours! (HEHEHE says the man who can't stand the trainer
What does on call mean?  Does that mean you need your phone, your laptop or do you have to go somewhere?  If you need the phone and laptop to deal with work, bring the laptop with you if you have a way to get a connection remotely.  Training ride with a backpack has got to be good for HTFU points!

Slim shins is rocking the training - not sure Slim Shin Shady Wood has time for mentor groups.

Houstonrider - 2011-01-04 10:03 PM I'm all for keeping this group going. I haven't been in too often but I'm starting to get a bit excited about my training.

Kim, Can you ride on a trainer? If it were me I would just do some loops and call it a mental strength day.

What's this trainer thing you speak of?

I'll come back for another go-around. I will admit, though, I did do some looking when the other MG's started to open up, but I didn't cheat on you guys & gals. My heart is here. Kiss

Lots on my plate the first part of this year... 13.1 at the end of this month, then I'm in again for another 70.3. Looking to have a better and faster 70.3 experience. Quite nervous about the 2nd go-around, though. I absolutely MUST be dedicated to the long bike sessions. I am excited that at least I will have a decent run base going into training for the HIM, and I don't sweat the swim too much. I've already been in the pool a bit this offseason, and I'll dial back some of my swim training this go around so I can have extra time for longer bike and run sessions.

Looking forward to another season with all of you...let's keep it going!

Also, it's been an interesting start to 2011 already. Our school district has been in the national news this week because of death threats sent in a letter to the superintendent...pretty much everyone from students to teachers are targets of this insane person...scary stuff. Hopefully it will all work out and they will find the freak who is responsible. Until then, there's a bit more stress and tension in the air.

Hope everyone else is off to a good start to the new year.

I'd love to keep the group going but as you guys have probably noticed I've been a slacker on BT recently. I'll check in here/there but doubt it'll be as regular as before. I still do spy on everyones logs and will be sending out inspires. Hopefully I can free up some more time before next round of mentor groups...

For that price I would have bought them.  If you didn't like them you would have gotten your money back on Craig's list.  That being said, I would only buy them if you committed to going with clipless pedals.  You of course use them without (I assume they are mountain bike shoes and not road shoes) but you wouldn't do that in a tri cause you wouldn't run in them.  If they are road shoes I wouldn't use them at all without clipless pedals.

On call means I need to get on my laptop if I get paged.  No good way to do that remotely.  So it means coming home. I don't know that I can do that many loops, but I'll do as many as I can.  Maybe with music I'll last longer.  The sad part is I also have to do a 2.5hr run, which means figuring out a route that doesn't take me far, but that is much easier.  I'll just randomly run around for a while.

So what are everyone's goals and any planned races for 2011?

In addition to the Houston Half Marathon and Ironman 70.3 Texas, I'm hoping to add more tris to the schedule this year. I've done 4 in each of the last 2 years, but feel shortchanged. Hopefully there will be some free weekends to hit up a few more races in 2011. I'd also like to add a second HIM this year...still looking for the perfect race for that.

Still working on my plans for this year.  Goals are to run a half marathon with James and decide on either an oly or HIM, train and complete it.  Been looking at races for about 2 hours now.  Part of me just wants to register for the HIM and the other part knows I need to really consider the amount of training required for such a big race.  The more I think about it the more I want to do it.  Never thought I'd be sitting here trying to decide whether I should do an HIM or wait another year.  Funny thing is last year I was thinking I was crazy for wanting to do a sprint triathlon

As far as planned races I only have one race on the schedule right now which is the Cooper River Bridge 10k I did last year.

Completely forgot I have another race that I'm planning on doing.... a mud run with my roommates.  We've turned it into a competition, my apartment v. James's apartment v. my roomie's bf/James's bro's apartment.  It's 4 miles and over 30 obstacles!!  It's in April so we have plenty of time to train so we can kick the guys' butts

I have no real goals.  I find they get in my way.  Just kidding.  I want to increase my run volume/week and keep it up there.  I really want 30+ miles but since I am slow and that is a lot of time I'll be happy with 20+.  That will make me less slow over time and maybe that 30+ will be achievable by the end of the season.  I also want to stop slacking on the bike.  I love biking but this time of year I only have lunch hour and it makes it harder (stop all this trainer talk).

Race wise I won't be doing many.  It is kind of a hassle for me and I really do like the training more then the racing.  If some running races come around I might do them, up to HIM's but they will be random and will just show up on my schedule.  I did a few 5k's this winter and even placed in one of them but I like the longer races.  My first HIM is in April and if my schedule allows it I will add another HIM late, and maybe an EXTERRA.  I'll probably skip the local series as they are all pool swims and $$$$.  Although I've heard a rumour that they canceled the sprint I did last year and are changing it to an HIM.  If so I'll do that race.

Wow, I am talkie before my coffee.

Your races are the most entertaining.  Well, the ones you write on the calendar on the proper day and make.  But the excitement of waiting to see if it will be a blizzard, if the ice will melt off the water, etc etc keeps me going over here in the 100 degree temps.

We don't actually have to race to participate in the group right?

Right now I've got a May HIM on the calender and want to do a half and probably a full mary.

I guess that means I need to train, huh?

Right now my sole focus is on IMTX. I've been looking at my training plan and both the distance and volume are going to really start increasing and I still have a lot of work to do in regards to my weight. I'll most likely still do Bridgeland Sprint and I also want to try a cycling road race in August, but beyond that I can't see much beyond May 21st.

2011

Lonestar 70.3 April 10th - can't wait!
May - August ????
Bridgeland Sprint (redemption) - Aug
Houston Olympic - Sept
Firethorn Sprint - Oct

My guess is that I will be the bike during a family relay somewhere in those summer months. Had a lot of fun doing it last year.  I am sure a run race will slide in there somewhere.  I did the Astros Race for the Pennant 5k 2 years in a row so I may go for a PR there.  It's a big 5k with great eats after.
