if you log a 25 yard swim workout please be sure to log that you walked to the fridge or you held your breath for 8 seconds or you turned your head to the left or you can spell green or you can count to four on one hand or you can write your name backwards or you can start a car with keys to that car or you can open a door or you can close a door or you like going to the zoo or you have a life size poster of betty freidan above your bed that you say good night every night.

HEY!  I logged a 50 yard swim workout last week!  It was my recovery swim, and I'm proud of it!
Good luck to all of the racers....nada for me.  Up to Calgary for a few days, then home to watch kids compete.

I gotta say, right now anyway, I like the IM distance.   IMAZ is looking more and more likely.

Thanks John, I was just thinking about that same statement.  And then the following post, Mark asked, "Why not?"  and Linda never answered....I've been on pins and needles since 6/27 wondering when she would answer Mark!

I know, I know.  However, it's a woman's perogative to change her mind!

I'm disappointed with my CdA performance.  I KNOW I can do better.  I feel like it's unfinished business.  I'm also getting itchy to start training again.  So......I'm still not sure, have 4 months to decide.

My best friend is in, her first.  She's an amazing athlete, and would be an awesome training partner - she's way faster than I am on the run and the bike, and I could gain a lot training with her.  So.......big question is the family and their reaction.  We all know what a sacrifice this really is for everyone.  Right now they are all just shaking their collective heads at me, but Jeff is wavering, he may race, too.  Beth is even thinking about it, but she's not done ANY tri yet, so not sure about that.  Not that it stopped me.

So, shoot me now.....I may have to eat those words.   I'm also seriously coontemplating another try at Boston 2011, Jeff has committed to race, which means qualifying again this fall.  I am a masochist.

Off to Canada - get to meet Trevor!  Yea!

I am totally confused by this conversation. Is Twin signing up for IM Canada? and why not IM WI?

So for those non-fish out there, do you know whether or not you had a good swim before you come out of the water?

My swim paces this year.

Smithfield Sprint (300M pool) 1:49
Lonestar HIM (200M OWS) 2:13 (lots of waves and first time at that distance)
Rev 3 Oly (1500M OWS) 1:38 (pretty sure there was some current)
Columbia Oly (1500M OWS) 1:58
Colonial Beach Sprint (700M OWS) 2:32 (no wetsuit, lots of contact)

All of these I felt exactly the same and had no idea how fast I was until after the race when I looked at the splits.

Okay, it took me 4 days but I am FINALLY caught up on all 19 pages of MG posting.  Haven't hit the RRs yet but I have to get SOME work done during the day.   So many wonderful events have been blessing our little family.   Congratulations to all the racers, the breakthrough workouts, the smiling children, the non-broken clavicles..........   Oh Ryan, if you want a distraction from your healing, Birdy promised me that you would get me Cavendish's autograph from the Tour de California.   Your 4-5 week layoff coincides nicely with the amount of time remaining until I'm having dinner with you and Birdy in Seattle so I hope you've hopped to it.  Wink

I'm dipping back a few weeks to Andy's question about water on the run.  Here is my dilema and I'd love everyone's thoughts/suggestions.    I've been having great success with HEED on the bike and found I can cut back on the gel consumption as well.  However I'm not sure what to do on the run.  I don't really want to race a half wearing a fuel belt but they are serving Gatorade on the course.  Do you guys bring your own liquid nutrition on the run?  I'm cool with packing gels and electrolyte tablets but am looking for ideas. Granted I haven't done much experimenting as of late with long (10k+) runs and nutrition so I might figure it out, but like I said I'm looking for suggestions.

The summer is flying by too fast for me, but love to see another weekend right around the corner and I am sure a few of us are even more excited because we're racing!!!!

So....who's doing what? ready to podium or testing a strategy? lay out the details kids!

And question of the week that I've thought about a lot lately, what's your race distance sweet spot?  where do you do the best? what do you like doing the most?

Not racing until next weekend.  My favorite distance is the olympic - probably because I've shown the most improvement at this distance.  For me the bike is long enough to maximize my strength and the run is long enough that it slows people down to my pace.   Also I don't have to worry too much about nutrition at this distance either.

Yes my understanding is Kim is coming to Pentiction this year to sign up with us all for IM Canada 2011.

Watchout Kim, that sounds like and assumed sale.  Your getting ready to get roped in.   Have Fun!

Do you know if you've had a good swim before you get out of the water?  Yes!  Any swim I can get out of the water alive is a good one!   As for what you were really asking for...I never know till I see the times.

No racing plans as usual for the weekend but I did print out a Half Mary run/walk plan for LV that starts on 8/9!! Whoop!  Does anyone know if the half is full yet?  I want to wait six weeks to see how the body cooperates before putting race money out.

have you tried gatorade endurance?   if not get some sample packs for this weekends long run.   if you have and it doesn't work and if you're cool with gels on the run then go with that and water.  a race belt gets might uncomfortable after a while.  and try the powerbar gels if those work then no need to bring your own.  race belts with gel holders seem to be a good idea but depending on the type of gel (packaging) they can get REALLY annoying.

and  i just checked to and we're not one of the races using ironman perform. so it will be ge on the course.

Sam--I don't define a good swim by my time necessarily.  I am finding that courses are far from accurate, especially now that I have my 310XT with the new firmware (double checked this with my swim's coach's GSP above water this week and it was spot on).  My timed 1.2m OWS this week was 2:00/100, but in some races I have swam sub 1:30??? uh, don't think so even though I would love it. For me, a good swim is one where I come out of the water and just feel it.  That happened in my last sprint--I started harder, my siting was spot on and I was out middle of my wave. My Garmin time was 1:50/100 (although the results reported 1:32/100--course was short!).

Birdy--I can always count on you to add levity to my day!

Tracy--I wondered the same thing.  I HATE carrying anything around my waist when I am already tired and potentially bloated.  For my last HIM, I decided to go the water stop/gel route. I drank H20 at every stop and occasionally would take a little gel with it. I also popped 2 salt stick tabs every hour.  It worked well for me.  By the time I hit the run, I am so sick of drinking sweet beverages that the thought of dowing Gatorade, Infinit or Perform makes me want to puke.  I am hoping that same strategy will work this weekend where the temps will be in the 90s with high humidity.  Time willl tell, but that is my two cents.

Tracy--one other thing, the concentration of beverages served on courses seemst to vary widely which is another reason I like the gel/water route.

Yay!  I'm racing this weekend.  My A race which is a return to Vineman 70.3.  Weather on Sunday is slated to be almost 20 degrees cooler than last year and I am starting an hour earlier, too, so it's the best of both worlds!

I am ready to race my heart out and I have a strategy which I will stick to if it kills me, which is to stay focused on the swim...no lollygagging or negative thoughts and try to push through the mental wall that seems to pop up halfway through my swims!  On the bike, I am racing with power so I just need to stay within zone but push with a steady effort the whole way.  And on the run, just give it all I've got and not hold back.  I've done some really hard training for this run, so I'm ready to see how it all comes together... Woo Hoo!!!

Last year was 6:13:xx and I finished in 102F heat.  CA70.3 was 5:51:xx.  I think I am more fit than I was in March...and I am mentally ready this time.

I do like the HIM distance, maybe because the swim is not as long in proportion to the rest of the events like it is in an Oly.  And I like the racing intensity of the HIM, vs. the throw up intensity of an Oly.  I've done only 3 sprints and while I enjoyed them, I guess I prefer to go long if I'm going to go through the expense of registration, driving somewhere, setting up, etc.  As far as placement in sprints, I did really well in them!  Guess because swim was so short.

As an aside, I noticed that I was mentioned in an IM Canada discussion???  What did I miss?  Help?!

Hi Tracy!

I am strictly a water and gel person on my runs.  I just stick a few gels in my tri top pocket and bring the little 10oz fuel bottle that goes in the belt, but I hate the belt so I just carry it in my hand.  I did see a little neoprene hand holder thingy for it last weekend that I almost bought, but then thought, I actually don't mind running with it.  Having it with me allows me to sip every 10-15 minutes on a schedule versus waiting for aid stations and I can avoid the pile ups there and keep going.  If I have to refill it at a water stop it's no biggie, I just pour water in from the cups!

I do this on my training runs, too, even for 6-7 mile runs.  I really LIKE having water and it doesn't slow me down at all, in fact, I believe I perform much better having constant hydration...kind of like a camel...

Is it bad I heard a PSA on the radio today about how your kids are supposed to be in booster seats until they are 4'9 and though about Suzy and Kim and giggled the whole rest of the way home?

SSMinnow - 2010-07-14 6:43 AM

The summer is flying by too fast for me, but love to see another weekend right around the corner and I am sure a few of us are even more excited because we're racing!!!!

So....who's doing what? ready to podium or testing a strategy? lay out the details kids !

And question of the week that I've thought about a lot lately, what's your race distance sweet spot?  where do you do the best? what do you like doing the most?

Racing a long sprint this weekend. Should be able to beat last years time. Not sure about the podium. There are some super fast guys in my age bracket ( my daughter thinks that's the "older than dirt" category)  but I will have a great time and am volunteering at the super sprint race right after mine.

Also  George congrats on all three great news stories.

SSMinnow - 2010-07-14 1:59 PM Sam--I don't define a good swim by my time necessarily.

Why do you keep calling me Sam?  that's the 2nd time you have done that recently.  I did change my avatar.  Put your reading glasses on ; )

Well, SAM, oh sorry I meant Tony, that is just mean spirited and evil.  I am 5'1" and Suzy is 4'10.  We've been out of boosters for years!  AND, I can't believe I let you slide on the old, dirty, heavily deposited contact lenses that you kept for 6 months for what reason, I cannot fathom,  and you giggled all the way home about us!

Never again, my friend.
