The weather's supposed to warm up this weekend, so I should be logging some time on the bike soon. How's everyone else's week going? |

Pro 4353 Wallingford, PA | Subject: RE: Team Lively Lava notarunnr - 2008-04-10 4:44 PM Sure is quiet without Julie around here...... I swam today and am at about 50% for my swim goal, I am not doing so good on the bike....0% I love my bike, just having trouble getting out on it. I hope to attend my first spin class tomorrow night with a friend of mine. Does that count for bike time? Do the bikes in class track mileage, or is it just by minutes, anyone know or does it vary by center? I am psyched for my first spin class and a little nervous that I won't be able to keep up. It is an hour class. My friend says I can stop after 45 minutes...yea right! Well, I don't know about everybody else, but I definitely log spin class time as bike time... None of the spin bikes at my gym have any way of tracking mileage, I don't know about others. I usually just sort of "guestimate" my mileage based on how long I spent on the spin bike and the level of effort. I have a bike set up on a trainer at home with a bike computer, so I have a general idea of what a 16 mph avg. effort feels like vs. an 18 mph effort, on a stationary bike at least... Most spinning classes are a pretty intense effort. Just a word of caution... If you're using the spin class as bike training for outdoor cycling (vs. doing it as a cardio workout to burn calories, etc.), don't feel like you have to follow exactly what the instructor is doing. A lot of spinning instructors have their classes doing a lot of out of the saddle work, which is a great aerobic workout, but you really don't ride like that in the real world. When I do a spin class, I usually just increase the resistance or increase my leg cadence when the instructor has the class out of the saddle. It's better, more specific training for my goals... I'll do a few sets out of the saddle just to give my butt a break, but most of the time I stay seated. Have fun and enjoy your spin class!! They can be a lot of fun! |

I think I'm ahead of target on everything but strength training (which somehow always seems to get short changed in my training...) but was sort of the plan. My kids have half-days in school next week, so my training time will be much more restricted, so I needed a little buffer. Keep up the good work, Team Lava! |

I think I'm up to about 50% on my run goal now, so I just need to spend some time in the saddle while hubby's in town this weekend,a nd then hit the pool a little more next week, and i'll be back on track! Yay! oh, and I know what you mean by half school days messing things up. Around here, all kindergarten is half day only. I have a kindergartner. Enough said. You'll get the training you need in somehow! Let us know if you need a KITA!! |

Pro 4353 Wallingford, PA | Subject: RE: Team Lively Lava Got my longest brick yet done today - 33 + bike & 4 mile run. Then I came home and mowed the lawn... DH & my oldest are on a boyscout camping trip this weekend, and it's supposed to rain tomorrow, so I took advantage of the better weather today to get some of the yardwork out of the way. The BEST part of the day though was that.... (drumroll please.....) My 9 year old daughter FINALLY learned to ride her bike today!!!! Hooray!!! She's been very timid about her for several years now. A few years ago she decided she wanted to take her training wheels off, so we did - but she wasn't really ready and it scared her. Ever since then, she's had this fear of riding a bike. But it finally clicked for her today - and now she's really excited about being able to ride! We even rode together a bit around the neighborhood after dinner. Yay! My youngest is still using training wheels, but I'm hoping she can graduate this summer to riding a "two wheeler" and maybe we can do some nice casual bike rides, there are some nice flat easy to ride bike paths not too far from here. I can't wait!! |

Out of an hour class they stood for a total of about half an hour. It was a tough work out and very hard on my quads. Aside from the standing I liked it. I only stood for about 10 minutes total. I estimated my mileage at about 15 miles for the hour. On the low side, but I am not worried about making my goal for the month, and I don't want any one to complain |

On the low side, but I am not worried about making my goal for the month, and I don't want any one to complain I would echo the comments of caution! be careful when it comes to the standing and jumps. I also do my own thing and increase resistance (or try and mimic the best I can what is in my training plan) while they are doing jumps and things like that. My own personal rule is that I won't do anything in class that I wouldn't do on a bike I just log the time - I'm not sure that my mileage guestimates would be very accurate, but that's more because I'm not all that experienced on a bike, last year was my first full summer of biking |

I just stopped in to log Julie's miles.....can you believe that while she is in Tempe she is still getting some training in? She says Mike is psyched for the race; it is supposed to be hot on race day, like 90. Julie, the social butterfly we know her to be has met a lot of BTer's that are racing....sounds like a lot of fun out there. I am going to be checking on Mike throughout the day tomorrow, Julie says he is shooting to finish around 7. |
