hahahaha awesome.

there is a quote from speedo that sums up swimming very well

"its not how far you swim
its not how fast you swim
its how far you swim fast"

that sums up swimming right there. swim far, swim fast, do it often. 100s to 400s are a good distance to be doing, with some intervals above and below that. shoot me a PM and i'llgive you some workouts that have helped me a ton.

rc63413 - 2008-08-15 7:21 PM Anyone racing this weekend?

Raced today... race report is up.  Got my first award!  Finished 2nd in Clyde.  I really turned the corner with my OWS today.  The time certainly does not reflect it (it seems everyone was kind of slow today) but my sighting was on and most importantly I stayed relaxed and was able to swim freestyle the entire way.  That in itself is a MAJOR feat for me.  Also set a new PR on the run and could have been faster if I had known they shortened the course by 0.4 miles to make it a 5k instead of 3.5 mi.  Either way it was a great day all around.  This is the first race this year that I actually had any spectators and I actually placed.  My wife, mom, dad, aunt, uncle, and cousin were all in attendance.

Nice job with the swim, I do not know how accurate the swims are measured in general.  You ran great and it is always a good to have some of your friends and family there to see you do it.

Good job

Great job, Scott. I'll check out the RR in a minute.

Mine is up as well. No hardware to report but I did manage 8th in my AG (total of 30 competitors). I screwed the pooch in T2 and the hills on the bike slowed me down a lot more than I'd hoped but I also had a very good run and swim. Overall a great race, well organized and I feel good about my effort. Oh and I'm still waiting for the final overall results but I think I placed in the top 50-60 out of over 300!

Sounds like a great race overall!  I love triathlons and the way they mark your age groups, it does help!  T2, I had exactly the same problem in my first tri.  I thought about super-glueing the insole down, but instead got some of those crazy fast ties.  I am pretty anal about how my shoes feel when I run, so anal that I never untie even my training shoes!  I would hate to stop my friends in the middle of a run just to tie my shoes so I just tie em just-right once and slip em on and off from then on.  I had the insole buldge up in my arch multiple times before I finally gave in and ran anyway and they did straighten themselves out-frankly my time in T2 was a waste.  I ran out of T2 and they took care of them self.  Wish I had not wasted the time thinking it would make the difference.  Lesson 1, make adjustments when needed rather than when anticipated, the mind has a tendency to creating problems where there will not be.  Lesson two, the fast ties work better than expected for me-I thought the shoes would feel loose.  Also, great job on the run-you are in a pretty tough age group-sounds like you had a good time.

You are totally right...IF it happens again, I'll just count on it working out on the run. If not I can stop and adjust but the time in T2 was a waste. Lesson learned.

Onwards and upwards and I can't wait until my Oly in a few weeks...which is supposed to be flat, flat and then more flat. Pretty much the antithesis of the Luray course.

My dad got a nice shot of me rounding the last buoy I thougt I'd share.  Don't know how he found me but he says he could tell from my lanky arms.

Feel free to critique the form :-)

Definately what he said. You are twisting up and out of the water to breathe. This is driving your legs deep into the water and killing any momentum that you are trying to carry. You need to rotate your body to get a breath... not pull it up and out of the water.

You will be amazed what times you can squeak out if you work out that flaw. You will be a lot more fluid and lose a lot less power on each kick and pull.

So, I know I have been absent.

6 days and counting to the HIM. Should be a great time.

Sound advice and I will take it and run... errr swim.  Definitely something I need to work on but I don't think I'm quite as bad as the picture shows.  I say that becase after thinking back I realized that I am actually checking my watch in that picture.  I vividly recall checking my watch as I approached the final buoy to see how I was doing.  Hence the overly bent wrist and head up.  Funny that I was caught in the act.  Still desperately need to work on my kick and form though.  Thanks again for the tips guys.

Justin, good luck with th HIM.

That is a great pic and sure....likely story about checking your watch ;-) On a serious note, does anyone else check their time during the swim? I have a hard enough time seeing in front of me and keeping track of the gigantic brightly colored buoy's that I can't even imagine trying to check my time much less read a watch. Am I the only one?

Oh and I don't have any pics nearly as good as that one but here is a link to some race day pics if you are bored and care to take a look: http://picasaweb.google.com/jdandginger/LuraySprint

And good luck, Justin. You've been working hard and are more than ready. I'm sure you'll kick butt and I can't wait to hear all about it.

During races I do not look at my watch much at all, certainly not the swim part.  With the swim I just try to get through.  With the bike and the run it is pretty much listening to what my body is saying and thinking can I push it more or am I cramping anywhere that sort of stuff.  I did find my Garmin nice on the run last time, since it is hard to get a feel for pace after the bike and mile markers are not as frequent as during running races.

Race is Sunday... 4 days left... Should be a good time. All the work has been put on the books... now it is time to put up or shut up, right??

I definately do not check my watch during the swim. The only time I really know where I am at time wise is when I come running out of the water. I do check it occasionally on the bike and run... but that is because it is my HRM and I use HR to check how my pacing is working for me. Other than that it is all RPE for most of the race.

Change o' topic, guys. Anyone ever have any experience with piriformis syndrome or piriformis injuries? I think what I thought was a minor glute strain is actually irritation of the piriformis. It isn't bothering me much when I run or swim much but does cause some dull pain and referred lower back pain after I sit for a long time. I haven't been in the saddle since it got really bad but it didn't bother me while biking during my race except when I went to stand up (experienced tightness in my glutes and lower back). I'm actively stretching and taking NSAID's but I'm hoping to avoid much time off. Thoughts? Comments? Advice?

Thanks!

There are some yoga positions that help.  If you google them you will find some good ones.  I find two of my best friends are a foam roller for my legs (thwart off IT band stuff) and a tennis ball that you basically use to roll under your glute.  The are a lot of muscles in there that you cant get at by stretching alone.  I basically roll it around as I sit on it, while on carpet generally.  It does hurt some, but the muscles should relax as the pressure is applied.  I have had a lot of experience in this area.  I have used a very very mean/good massage person, but she has been replaced by my tennis ball for the most part.

yeah, I've found a good stretch or two that is helping but I can still feel some tightness deep in the muscle. Looks like me and a tennis ball are about to get very familiar with each other ;-)

Thanks for the input...I'm hoping that stretching will get me through most of this until after my Oly. Then I'm going to get a good (read: painful as hell) full body massage to strip everything and get some of my kinks worked out.

Are you all ready to go.  Hope your taper is going well.  Sometimes that is the worst part.  It's going to be hot so keep on top of the hydration/electrolytes.  Have fun this weekend and best wishes on you HIM.

I'm racing... HIM on Sunday. I think chrisrunz is racing the Oly distance at the same race so I hope to meet her.

Should be a good time. I'm mostly anxious more than nervous. I just want the day to get here so I can toe up to the line and go and not think about it anymore.

I definately have some taper maddness going on.

Good luck David and Chris
